Hakuna Matata - Amazingly Hot August

No wonder I wasn't getting any updates I forgot it was a new month.

Will check back later to try and catch up.

Hope everyone is doing great!!!!

Good Afternoon Team!

Kim - I guess the first of the month is not payday for you. LOL

Emily - Hi to you also! Good job on the long run!

AFM - We did get in a few miles yesterday morning, but it was a late night- lots of clean up after our party - so today be are both just kind of “vegging”. It was also windy early in the day (usually relatively calm in the morning) which did not help our reluctance to get on the bikes.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hi team! I was going to say happy Monday but it's Tuesday. It was a long weekend here so it still feels like a Monday to me. It was nice having the extra day off!

Lynn - Saw pictures of the Tiki bar! Was the party fun? You had the bike team over right?

Kim - Hard to believe it's August already isn't it!

Emily - I PVR'ed the marathon but they did interupt coverage to show a cycling event. I ff'ed through it and watched the rest of the marathon. You could try going to http://www.ctvolympics.ca and seeing if you could watch coverage there. They stream live but I'm not sure if they restrict access to Canadians. We get Olympic coverage on a few channels here which is probably why they broadcast it.

Good job on the 8 miler! Feeling ready for DL in a few weeks? I can't believe it's already that time :)

AFM - I did a 15 miler on Saturday which was incredibly hot and humid. I wasn't bothered by the heat as much as I thought I would but I was drinking a lot of water. My Fuel Belt holds 4-8oz bottles and I ended up drinking 8 bottles of fluid. I felt like I was making good time but ended up walking the last 3 miles because my knee was bothering me. I think it's just a matter of changing new shoes. I didn't end up going for a massage yesterday but I'm rescheduling for Thursday or Saturday.

I watched a bit of the men's triathlon this morning. Sad that Simon Whitfield crashed and had to drop out. I downloaded an app so that I could watch some of the coverage while I was on my way to work but it needed a WiFi connection to stream. Grr! Oh well, maybe they'll replay it tonight.

Oh and here's the triple chocolate mousse cake I made a few weeks ago. I've been lazy about blogging lately

Hope everyone's having a good day :)

Good Evening Team!

Vicky - Yes, the Tiki party went well!

AFM - Got in 16.5 miles today, wind again picked up after we started, but not too bad.

Pixie Dust to all who are in need!

Hi everyone. Long time, no posting. I'm so sorry to have bailed on everyone since April, but I've just had too much going on.

I will not even attempt to catch up on what I've missed. Plus, I won't be on regularly, so I'll just be perpetually behind. :sad1:

Things have really been hopping for us. I finished the spring semester great, but struggled a lot this summer. Just too much. So, I got my first B! But, no biggie. I really needed my vacation by the time we headed to Europe. I was so stressed by the time we left that Frank and I argued all the way to the airport. Not a good way to start. We got over it quickly, relaxed and had an amazing time. Of course, I missed Harrison the whole time, but it was nice to not have to worry about entertaining him.

Exercising has been bad lately. I have just managed to stay injured constantly. So, I quit running for all of May, June and July. I was hoping that I could actually heal if I gave myself enough time. I'm now running again and am up to 3 miles at a time, but realize that I will never be able to run a marathon again. It's just not worth it to me anymore. Plus, how can I be a nurse if I'm in constant pain? So, Frank bought me the most amazing road bike and I've been relearning how to ride. I'm up to 25 miles for my long ride, but hope to get up to 50. Harrison has been joining me for some shorter rides (he's up to 8 miles) and we've really enjoyed it.

I hope everyone's doing well. I was looking at all the races you guys are registered for. Amazing stuff, really!!!!:thumbsup2

Good Morning Team!

Tandy - Good to hear from you, glad you had a good trip to Europe! Pixie Dust for the injuries! Have you thought about walking/race walking instead of running? There is less impact in walking. Of course, there is always cycling (since Scott and I have given up running/walking, cycling is a great low impact way to exercise, and there are cycling rides like there are marathons, just no Disney ones - yet)

AFM - We got out for another 16.5 miles, Scott is taking it easy, as his Senior Olympics events are in the next 2 days. We have a local bike ride on Sunday - can go up to 100 miles, we will probably do more like 40-50 miles.

Pixie Dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Well, I didn't do TOO bad at the family reunion last Saturday. I managed to maintain weight. No loss/gain this week.

I had a nice run on the Panhandle Pathway near my Great Aunt's place. I walk/jogged 5 miles on it. It's a nice Rails to Trails pathyway, about 3-4 years old now. It was quite humid Saturday morning, but overall the heat was bearable that morning.

Sunday marks the beginning of my 1/2 Marathons(s) training plan. This means is just over 12 weeks to the Monumental (1/2) Marathon here in Indy! I'm really hoping to work on pace for this 1/2.

With this news, I've also booked my flights for my trip down for the Marathon Weekend in January! Southwest/Airtran had some flights marked down yesterday and I decided that I'd probably not see much better in prices, and it came out cheaper than my estimated gas bill if I drove down.

:bday: Happy birthday Rick :bday:

Hope you're having a wonderful day!

Good Morning Team!

Rick - Happy Birthday!

Kipp - Good luck with the training! Yes, we have seen flying costing less than driving on trips also.

AFM - We suddenly seem really busy! After weeks of very little on our calendar, suddenly we have something to do every day! Today is training to be election judges on election day. Friday and Saturday is Senior Olympics, Sunday is our “Ride for Sight”. We got in 12 miles this morning on the bikes, I will probably not get in rides the next 2 days, Scott will just get in his Senior Olympic events.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hi Team.

Lynn will Scott be competing in the Senior Olympics next year in Cleveland? Eve has promised to be our tour guide at the Rock and Roll museum. I have my trials in Oct and hope to win a spot on the race walking team for Ky.

I have my first race back since the achillies melt down Saturday. I'm still not healed but I think I'm recovered enough if I take it easy. That's easy, take is slow and cautious in a race, right?

Have a great weekend y'all.

Hi, everyone,

Just a quick post from Bethany Beach, DE to say that I've managed to keep up with my marathon training while here. We chartered a fishing boat on Thursday and caught a great variety (flounder, croaker, spots, sea bass, blues, puffers). We also caught several small sharks. We didn't keep the sharks but enjoyed the rest in grilled fish tacos.

Tandy: So good to hear from you! I missed seeing your posts. Keep us updated about how the cycling goes. Tell us a bit more about your trip when you have a chance too.

Rick: Hope that birthday was fantastic!

To everyone else: enjoy the weekend and good luck with your training!

Hi team! Happy Friday! Hope everyone is doing well with their training or enjoying their vacations :)

My chiro is away for most of August and September so I'm working with his understudy. I'll be honest and say I was a little hesitant at first because he's still a student but it turns out that I really like the exercises he has me doing. Lots of compound exercises with some lifting thrown in. We even did the ladder drills which I haven't done in a year. Lots of fun :) That was my first session so we'll see what we do on Monday.

I switched my training to Mondays while my chiro's away so that I can (hopefully) go running with my local running store's group on Wednesday. They seem to have some faster runners so I'm thinking I can use that to sneak in some speed and continuous work :)

I also picked up a new pair of runners - I normally run in the New Balance 860 but I picked up the 870v2 and the 860v2. The 870v2 is still a stability shoe but has a lower heel drop and so a little bit less support. The idea is that because it puts your foot into a more neutral position, you'll need less cushioning/support. When I tried the 860v2 in store, for some reason the shoe felt really loose on my foot. The 870v2 has a snugger fit and so it felt better on in the store but I guess we'll see once I actually run in them.

I also picked up a new camera - it's an SLR so I've been playing around with it and taking lots of test pictures. It definitely has more of a learning curve than a P&S but it does more of what I want, especially for the food photography.

I didn't do any running this week partially to give my knee a rest and partially because I feel like I'm in a bit of a funk lately. I don't feel motivated to get stuff done - running, blogging or otherwise. Not sure why. Oh well. Maybe I just need more sleep.

Hope everyone has a great weekend! :wave2:

Hi team. So glad it's Friday!!!!!

Vicky: Is this new knee stuff or just taking care of the same old thing? Trust me, I totally get the funk thing. Been in it for about 3 months now. I hope you enjoy the new camera. I've been trying to keep up a bit with your blog and your food always looks great!

Elizabeth: Sounds like you're having a great time! I've always wanted to do deep sea fishing, but we never seem to make it happen.

Dave: Uh oh, what happened to the achilles? Good luck with your race. Take it easy.

Lynn: You do sound very busy, as usual. I think I'm going to stick with biking. I can't get my head around walking instead of running. I'm just too tempted to take off and go. But, as long as I bike long distances and run short distances, I should be okay. Good luck with your long ride this weekend.

KippWade: It's always nice when flying is cheaper than driving, isn't it? Glad you got out for a nice run on Rails to Trails. I have part of it close to me here, but haven't ever done it. How was the gravel for running?

Rick: Happy belated bday. Hope you had a great time!

AFM: Got out for a 4 mile run today. That's the farthest I've ventured. No pain, but I took it super slow. I did 25 on the bike yesterday with Harrison. Actually, he only made it 12.5, then I did it again.

As far as my trip, it was amazing. Germany was cold, like highs of under 70, but after leaving 105 degrees, it was refreshing. The wedding was beautiful and it was nice spending time with our German "family". Venice was beautiful. I haven't spent any real time alone with Frank since our honeymoon 19 years ago, so it was very romantic. We spent all day just walking around, looking at architecture, drinking wine and eating seafood. In fact, it wasn't until our 5th day there that we went inside a building. We just walked around getting lost every day and turning the opposite way of the crowds.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Hey All! Planning on doing my 20 miler tomorrow but they are forecasting rain/thunderstorms - if not then sunday. I really hope I get to do it tomorrow bc I hate having it hanging over my head!

ES - I always go to Rehoboth Beach - and LOVE it. Going in two weeks. where did you charter your boat? would you recommend them - I would love to do that. Also, is there any whale watching tours there?

Vicky - I hope your new shoes help and you feel better! BTW, can you add my first marathon for October 7 - Mohawk Hudson Marathon - Rick and I are long distance marathon buddies! I also have a 1/2 marathon - the Saratoga Palio on September 16. Thanks!

Rubato - glad to see you back and I am a HUGE fan of Venice myself - beautiful place!

Everyone, have a great weekend!

Hi Team!

Vicky - Yeah, I think I'm ready for DL. After we did our 10 miler a couple weeks ago, DH said he wished the race was already here and we didn't have to wait another month. What model of SLR did you get? I'm looking into getting a new camera and stepping up from a P&S.

Tandy - Good to hear from you, glad you enjoyed your trip to Europe.

Rick - Happy Birthday!

Lynn - I hope Scott's event went well.

AFM - It's been over 100 deg every day this week, so I only went out for a run once this week. We have 12 miler tomorrow morning. We're going to try and get out early but it will still be in the mid 70s, so we're going to play it by ear and see how it goes.

I have a work BBQ on Saturday. We might go to the movies this weekend.

Have a great weekend!
Emily

I'm on the phone with disney right now and am ANNOYED. trying to book room only rate and they say for first time in marathon history we can now only do it through their sports department and have to buy a "marathon package" in order for runners and their spectators to actually use the transportation to get back and forth to race beg/end. I'm on hold and waiting to see if this "package" costs more as I only need room only and at this point, applying AAA rate until hopefully a special comes out. I'll keep you updated.

UPDATE - now I talked to the sports department and they say no, you don't have to book through them to use the buses to get to and from the marathon - so you don't have to book their package to use the bus - completely contrary to what i was told by the main vacation people. which is good bc the room only marathon package was $1388.24 for WL standard while the AAA rate room only was $1206.80. I hope they are right!

Well that is good news because I had already booked my room before they even HAD marathon packages. I want to make sure my family can still use the buses to get to Epcot for the finish of the races.

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Good luck with the new chiro, and the running group! Hope you feel better soon!

Dave - We have no planes for national senior olympics, we have heard that in cycling, a lot of the contestants are retired pros. Scott did not place in today’s race, we will see how he does in tomorrows.

Tandy - Sounds like you had fun on your trip! We enjoy the biking, Scott, too, cannot handle walking.

Kimberly - Good luck on your long run!

Elizabeth - Good for you on the training - grilled fish tacos sound great!

Emily - Scott did not place in the race today, but he feels like it was a good ride. We have lots of talented old folks around here -LOL.

AFM - We were up at 5am to get to the Senior Olympics bike race on time. Scott rode in the first race, he did not place, but I think he was happy with his ride. We stayed for the second race to volunteer, we helped with the timing in the second race. We will head out early again tomorrow, volunteering for the first race tomorrow, and Scott will participate in the second. I figured I walked 4 miles between the car and race start - walking it several times.

Well turning 52 was pretty anti-climactic. I went to my chiro; I went to work; I went home. LOL

My workmates took me out to Red Lobster for a nice lunch, and my wife made me Shepherd's Pie for dinner (one of my favorite dishes which I was introduced to on a visit to Toronto 20 years ago). Christi got me a present: a book called "I Run, Therefore I'm Nuts!". Perfect, right?! My real present is a pair of Kinvara 3s that I ordered which arrived this afternoon. I am going to try them out for a few miles on Saturday!

The best part of my birthday were all the warm birthday wishes from you all and my friends on FB. It really made me feel good to see those throughout the day.

Today, I took the day off and spent the early morning running 15.75 miles for my Long Run. I am running a 5K on Sunday so I figured why not get it done now. The run was pretty good, following a route I created that took me to places around the city I have never run in before. I will have to blog about the details tomorrow. Then my son and I spent the rest of the day at the Chicago Comic Con. I must have walked for 5 hours (an excellent recovery walk after my run). We bought a bunch of stuff, of course. We ended the Con with a discussion panel with William Shatner, Avery Brooks, and Scott Bakula -- three captains from the Star Trek franchise. Awesome!

Now we are chillin at the Hyatt (yeah, we decided to spend the night at the Conference hotel) after having a nice dinner and seeing "The Bourne Legacy". Quite a full day indeed! I consider today more of my 'birthday fun day'.

Good Afternoon Team!

Rick - we have that book! It was fun to read! Sounds like you had a good day today!

AFM - Nothing for me but standing around, at the first Senior Olympics race today I noted bib numbers of folks as they came in from the 40K road race - I was the back up number recorder. Scott did the 5K time trial - got a silver medal today! For that race I was on traffic control - not that there was much traffic to control! Tomorrow is the "Ride for Sight", depending upon the wind, we will try to get in 50 miles. Wind today was really bad for the time trial, it started gusting up to 40mph. I was having trouble standing by the side of the road with my "SLOW" sign!

Pixie Dust to all who are in need!

Have a great evening all!
