Hakuna Matata - Amazingly Hot August

Hey team. Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend. I'm heading out in a few minutes to watch Harrison play a double header in baseball. We have no chance of winning either game, but at least it's not over 100 degrees today.

Great news. Harrison has joined the cross country team and starts practice tomorrow. He, as a 7th grader, is only allowed to compete in the mile, but I think that's plenty. That, mixed with fall baseball should keep him busy until November.

I got a good 2 miles of HIIT in today after my walk. I ran at a base of 7 mph and added intervals of 9 and even 10 mph for 30 seconds out of every minute. I love doing it but it takes a lot out of me. I am picking my bike up from the shop tomorrow and hope to just ride and do zumba instead of run. I have to keep reminding myself to only run a maximum of every other day.

Rick: It sounds like you had an amazing time with your son. How was the movie? I loved the lead actor in The Hurt Locker, and I loved the Bourne triology, so I want to see the movie, but haven't made it out yet.

Lynn: Congrats to Scott for his silver medal. Hope the ride today goes well. I have moments where I'm tempted to move strictly due to weather, wind being a major aspect of it!

Kimberly: Did you get your reservation worked out? I would be pretty angry about the lack of consistent information! How'd the 20 miler go?

Emily: How was your 12 mile run? Did you make it to the movies? What did you see?

Good Afternoon Team!

Tandy - congrats to Harrison, hope he enjoys the cross country team!

AFM - We got the Ride for Sight in the books, we went 50 miles, and it was not as hard as last year (or maybe the wind was not as bad). We were supplied breakfast of bagels, cream cheese, bananas, oranges, coffee. After the ride we were fed Pulled Pork sandwiches, salad and pizza. Last night we had a spaghetti dinner - all for $45. The ride also had aid stations with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, chocolate chip cookies, bananas, oranges, water, gatorade, and a few other things I cannot remember. The aid stations are every 10 - 20 miles or so - at least for the 50 miler, the 10 mile aid station, then one at 22 miles, then we passed the 10 mile aid station again at about 40 miles in. I do not know what they have beyond the 22 mile station, but I am sure there is at least one at the the turn around at 50 miles for those going for the 100! Now we will have the MS Bike ride next weekend!:faint:

Pixie Dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day all!

Hi team! Happy Monday! Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Tandy - Glad to see you on the boards again! Yay! Sounds like you had a fantastic trip to Germany! Did Harrison end up going on the cruise with your parents. Good job on the running and the bike mileage! Take it easy on the running, it might be one of those things that just takes a while to heal. When I sprained my ankle after the marathon, I took about 3-4 months off running. Tough but worth it in the end.

The knee is the same old thing  I think it's a combo of the IT band and needing new shoes. I hadn't been keeping track of mileage on my shoes and have already done several races on them plus all the usual mileage so they're probably need replacing. I bought a new pair but haven't had a chance to test them out yet.

How are your classes going? Do you have a busy schedule starting in September?

Lynn - I think I might have to take up bike riding next year. It sounds like all these races really feed the riders quite well. Pulled pork sandwiches sound yummy!! How many miles is the MS Bike ride this weekend?

Scott - Congrats on your silver medal :)

Rick - How was your 5K? Good job on your mileage for the weekend! Was the 'The Bourne Legacy' good? I've read mixed reviews about it. I really loved the first with Matt Damon but disliked the last two because of the director. I'm not a fan of the shaky cam work. I've seen that book in the bookstore, let me know how it is :)

Kimberley - Glad you got your WDW reservations sorted out. It's really the luck of the draw when it comes to talking to CMs on the phone. Some of them really know their stuff and some of them are really out to lunch. I've always booked my reservation on the phone or online and never had a problem. I've never had to go through Disney sports for a room.

Will get your races on the calendar after I'm done posting.

Emily - Is it humid in CA? Just curious if I should be anticipating hot and humid or just hot. I guess it doesn't make that much of a difference at 100F LOL

I picked up a Canon T3i - my P&S was a Canon S90. So far so good with the T3i, it's easy to use. The only difference is getting use to the size and weight of the SLR. Sometimes I miss being able to put the P&S in my purse or pocket. Before the T3i, I use to have a 'prosumer' SLR - 5DMII but that's a long story. I picked a Canon because I've always used Canon and a lot of people I knew from working in film used Canon as well. I guess I'm brand loyal  but I don't think there's that much difference between Canon and Nikon though.

AFM - I did an 8 miler on Saturday in the rain. It was really nice and refreshing. Definitely a change from the heat and humidity of the past few weeks. On Saturday, I went running with a friend from work and we were out with the local running group. I went slower than I normally would have so we could run together. We went out with the 5K group thinking they were going to run a 5K but it turns out they were training for a 5K and so they only ran 2 miles. LOL

I watched the men's 4x100m relay on Saturday and felt so badly for the Canadian team. I can't imagine running that fast and being able to keep track of where I am in the lane. I thought it was pretty awesome how the Canadian anchor took the team from 5th into 3rd! I wish the judges would review the footage before posting the results - that seemed wrong.

My newest blog post is Moroccan Chicken Stew which uses whole grain teff. It's a grain that's a staple in Ethiopia. Great for carb-loading and you get protein from the chicken :) Check it out if you have a chance.

Hope everyone is having a great day! :wave2:

I wanna see the new medal for this january's Mickey Marathon, I've heard it's very different.

The race went well, didn't push it but still won hardware. Time was a conservative 36:42. Glad I didn't know the walker just ahead of me was in my age group or it would have turned into a race.

Everyone ready for some Disney? Sept 16th I'm Mickey bound!!

Dave:hippie:

Good Afternoon Team!

Vicky - Yes, you get fed quite well at most of the bike rides. The MS Bike ride is 80 miles the first day, and either 50 or 80 miles the second (depending upon whether or not you stop at lunch time and take a shuttle back, or ride back to Sundance). Scott says thanks! It is not usually humid in CA, at least not like the East Coast, and the average temp is usually not 100F, but Scott says Jeff is making is sound hot! I guess they are having a heat wave now (I have not been paying attention). Just checked average weather for Anaheim, for first week of Sept. average is high of 89F and low of 64F, right now there is 40%, Scott just checked Acuweather, long range forcast for race day is 82F, sunny (understanding that long range forcasts are not usually very acurate)

Dave - Congrats on the hardware! Have fun at Disney!

AFM - Went out for short ride this morning, but it turned even shorter, the wind picked up quite a bit as we started, so we gave up after 6 miles.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Vicky....I’m sure the new chiro will be fine. You might even learn something new.

Tandy....I understand the whole hit and miss thing when it comes to posting here. I’m the same way. My family roots go back to Germany too. Where is your family from? Mine is in Bavaria...mostly near Stuttgart.

Rick...Happy Belated birthday, you youngin’!!!

AFM...Went out on Saturday for my long run/walk, as I am training for the ToT race in Sept. Weather was perfect...temps in the low 60's, blue skies, low humidity, couldn't ask for more. However, after I got somewhere between mile 5 and 6 of my 7 mile trek, I noticed that my my right forefoot was getting sore and that I was favoring my big toe. You might remember that I tripped 3 weeks ago and hyperextended my big toe. However, it no longer hurts to walk on it, and I did 6 miles last week without too much trouble, so I thought it was good to go.

Today, I went to see my chiropractor (who also does sports medicine type treatments) for a regular appointment. Almost as an afterthought I asked him to look at it. He thought as first that I had just pulled a muscle, but when he pressed on the joint, I about jumped off the table! He said he didn't dare try to do more with it until I had an x-ray. He said there may be a fracture or I may have chipped the bone. I should hear something tomorrow. If it is broken, then no running for three weeks!!!:scared1:

Ken and I are leaving for a trip to Australia on the 26th, so hopefully there is nothing more than just a pulled muscle as I was planning on doing some training while there. So, those of you who have been signing your posts "Pixie dust for those in need," I thank you. I was in need and didn't even know it!

My 5K went pretty well. The temps were in the low 60s so that was helpful. The out-n-back course had a lot of rolling hills in it which I handled okay. Finished in 30:07 (9:42/mm pace) which I am satisfied with. I wore my new Kinvara 3 shoes and they felt pretty good. I am going to run in them all week and see if I want to try them out on my 16-mile LSR on the weekend.

The Bourne Legacy was a fun movie to watch -- lots of action after the first 15 minutes. I can't say it was long on plot... it was a pretty easy story to tell, with the focus on action rather than character relationships. Ryan and I enjoyed it (but I can't say I would go see it again).

Mary - Lots of PD! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you! I hope the toe is nothing serious. Hope you and Ken have lots of fun in Australia. That's on my to travel to list :)

Rick - Great pace! So far so good with the new shoes! Good luck with the 16 miles this weekend! Sounds like it's going to be another 100 mile month?

Lynn - Looking forward to seeing you and Scott in a couple of weeks. Yeah Jeff was posting stuff on FB showing 100F temps. I'm assuming that's in the middle of the afternoon but still! Hot I can handle so I'm glad the humidity isn't crazy. Good job on the 6 miles! Can't wait to hear about the bike ride this weekend :)

AFM - Worked out yesterday with the new chiro. He's still a student but really good with the workouts. We did some weights, new stretches on the TRX, lots of compound exercises and some band work. He made sure I got a good stretch for Saturday.

Looks like there's rain in the forecast so I'll run on my TM tonight and test out the new shoes.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Good luck with the new shoes! Although it was 106F for the first 1/2 we did in Anaheim, I do not remember it being that hot in subsequent years, of course, this year has been really strange all around. I am hoping for more normal temps for this year.

Mary - More Pixie Dust for your big toe! Have a great time in Australia!

Rick - Sounds like you had good weather for your 5K. Hope the shoes are still good for the long run!

AFM - We did get in our 16 mile ride today, wind not bad, 5-10mph. We are keeping it light for the weekend.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

I'm still on the mend, finally thinking it will be over soon. Since I made those last changes in what I was doing the improvement is really starting to come together.

What seems to be working is 3 days of walk training, Monday, Wednesday and either Friday or Saturday. Then 3 days of cals, stretching and strengthening exercises. I was doing to much strengthening to often and to intensely. I had to quit doing the calf raises on one foot and on a step. I need to eventually work both back into my routine but not till all the pain is gone then I'll add it once a week at first then slowly work up to 3 days a week.

I'll be doing a 10 mile training walk in the morning. That will be the first 10 miler for about 3 months. I need to get back to having a distance day though since that marathon is looming less than 5 months away. I want to take that new cool medal to the house.:)

I hope everyone else is doing well and training strongly.

Dave:hippie:

MaryJ: Have you heard anything back from the doctor on your toe? I am praying that you will get good news and not have to put running on hold.

Dave: I am so happy for you that the healing is progressing and that your training is moving in a forward direction. I have no doubt you that the new Mickey medal will be a new resident of the Panda household!

Vicky: Sounds like the new Chiro is working out well. Have you called him a 'young Padawan' yet? Hmmm, maybe you shouldn't -- in case he makes you do burpies in response! LOL And yeah, I think August is definitely going to hit the 100 mile mileage marker.

Rubato: That is cool that Harrison is doing Cross Country! My son is doing the same thing -- this is his Freshman Year in HS and his first CC practice is tomorrow morning. It was a blast buying him his first pair of running shoes and some basic gear! I wonder if I can get him to consider running the Disney Half with me in January.

AFM: Tuesday was a good interval training day for me. Two sets of 3x500m intervals with Easy Runs between them was a good solid workout. I didn't want to get out of bed but I pictured Dave frowning at me so I got out there and took care of business! The new Kinvaras still feeling good! After the run, I really felt good. I was glad I got out there!

The family might be heading to Michigan for Labor Day Weekend. If we do, then I have to figure out an 18-mile training route out there in the forest! Cuz when we come back, the next weekend is the Chicago Half. And after that, the Fox Valley 20-miler. And then taper time. The marathon is quickly approaching! YIKES!!!!

Does anyone know what has happened to Mike Rice, I haven't heard anything from him for a long time. I hope he isn't injured.

Rick, glad I could help you get going. It often works for me to to think that a friend would be getting it done and not slacking.

I'm headed out for a 6.5 with my brother athletes along the river. Looking forward to a good workout on this cool morning.

Have an awesome day y'all.

Davepirate:

Good morning team. Hope all is well with everyone.

Rick: You know, running the DW half was Harrison's incentive to start running. But, he's still too young. We'll be going when he's finally 14. Your son should definitely do it if he's inclined. What a great shared experience.
Your training schedule sounds CRAZY! I really miss all those runs, but then again, I kind of don't. ;)

Dave: Glad to hear you're getting better. I am the queen of overtraining injuries, so yes, take it easy.

Lynn: I cannot even imagine running in 106 degrees! That would be horrible. I think I'd pass out. I can't even run when it's 80 degrees. Congrats on your 50 miles. I am hoping to get to that distance someday. I need to get comfy shorts cause my booty is killing me!

Vicky: Harrison will be going on the cruise, but it isn't until October. He finishes his last cross country meet the weekend before and baseball ends right around that time. I did tell him that if his grades aren't up, he can't go, but that shouldn't be a problem. Glad the new chiro is working out, but sorry about the knee. You've been dealing with this for years. :( The stew looks wonderful. Your blog and your cooking are really coming along nicely.

Mary: So sorry about the toe. Any news yet on what it is? Have a wonderful time in Australia. How long will you be gone? My family is from Frankfurt, but the people we visit are in the Cologne area. It's my hubbies best friend and we feel like we're family. We have stayed with them 3 times now and it's actually easier than hanging out with my own family. :lmao:

AFM: Harrison is loving CC, but he's sore. Something about not having any flexibility at all in his hamstrings (I've been talking to him about this for 2 years).

Took a day off from all exercise yesterday. I really needed it because my sciatic nerve was acting up again. Instead we went car shopping and carpet shopping. I have been wanting new carpet since we moved in here 4 years ago, but Harrison is finally old enough not to spill all the time. Plus, the dog isn't a puppy anymore. Now if I could just get Frank to stop spilling coffee!

School starts Monday. I've got everything ready to go: 100 pounds of books, study area, scrubs, new stethoscope, new shoes for clinicals, etc..... I am really excited, but nervous too. The first 3 weeks, we have lectures for 32 hours per week. Crazy stuff. But, after that, we get to start clinicals and labs.

Went out for a 4 mile walk, and am heading out now for a bike ride. Hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Good Morning Team!

Dave - Glad to hear you are finally on the mend, it has been a long journey.

Tandy - That first DL half was quite an experience - being our first long distance race, the heat, I was a walker, so the 106 came as I was finishing, but it was still very hot. I am surprised we went on to other races after that - LOL. Get coffee colored carpet LOL.

Rick - It would be great if you got your son to run the Disney races with you.

AFM - Got in early morning dog walk (that is a daily occurrence, except the 3 early - early mornings we had that did not give enough time to also walk dogs), but wind is pretty stiff this morning (usually it is calmer in the am), so will probably opt for the spin bike in the basement.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Good morning team.

Lynn: Yes, actually coffee colored carpet is in the running. :thumbsup2 I'm trying to find something that I don't have to steam clean every month.

AFM: I got a 20 mile ride in yesterday, along with a walk and zumba. It was so nice to be physically active all day. I managed a 3 mile walk and a 3 mile run today. It cooled off big time here today, and is such a treat.

I'm meeting a couple of friends for lunch today, then Harrison has cross country, followed by baseball practice and then, we're all going to the local minor league baseball game. We love going and it's their last week of local play. I'm just hoping the rain holds off until tonight. I'm trying to enjoy my last couple of days before school starts, but I should be cleaning and organizing my house. Oh well, it'll be there tomorrow, right?

Good Morning Team!

Tandy - sounds like you had quite and active day!

AFM - Yesterday did make it to the spin bike for 30 min. Today, early dog walk, then we will get bikes out later, it is also rather cool here, only supposed to be 68F today. Will be off the gird for a few days while in Sundance (Devil's Tower - "Close Encounters") for the MS Bike ride, will check in Monday or Tues.

Pixie Dust to all who are in need!

Have a great weekend all!

Hi team! Hope everyone is doing well!

Lynn - Definitely a strange year for weather. I can't believe how unbelievably hot it's been this summer. Good luck on your bike ride this weekend and have fun in Sundance :) Are the pups coming with you or are they staying put?

Tandy - That's a lot of books! Hopefully you'll have a locker at school or you won't be required to bring them all the time. You'll have to take a picture of yourself in uniform. You're going to be such an awesome nurse!! I'm so excited for you. Definitely enjoy the summer! You can clean and be inside when it cools down :) Thanks for the compliment on the blog!

Dave - Have a great workout! Glad to hear that the weather has finally cooled down.

Rick - He'd probably make me do chin-ups or Spiderman crawls. But I told him I refuse to do either LOL I think you just h ave to find a 6 mile route and then you can loop it 3x. It might be easier than trying to find a 18 mile route.

AFM - I went running last night with the running store and a friend from work. I asked if he would rather go with the group that was doing the 3 intervals of 10/1s or the 6K group. He chose the 6K group and then he dropped out half way into the run. He said something about not having eaten since lunch. He walked back to the store and I finished the run. I found it tough because I'm not use to running 10/1 intervals anymore. It was a good run though. There were mini cupcakes and juice waiting for us at the store.

This Saturday is the 30K and I'm looking forward to it. The weather is suppose to be cooler and it will be along the waterfront so that should make for an easier run. I'm going to pick up my race kit today so I'm excited to see what they're giving us. One year we got a jacket!

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Have a great race, Vicky!!!! It sounds like the race is going to be a lot of fun! Can't wait to read your race report!!

Hi team!

Just a quick post to say that I heard back from the doctor yesterday afternoon and my toe was NOT broken. So, I put on my running shoes and went out the door this morning. I must say it bothered me a bit the last 10 minutes or so, but overall, my knees are more sore than anything now.

I'm just glad to know that I can continue with my training!

I am SO Happy to hear that the toe is not broken! Be careful and let it heal up well! Yay!
