Hakuna Matata - Amazingly Hot August

:cheer2: Weekend Racers :cheer2:

Fingers crossed for cool weather this weekend! Good luck to Rebecca (and me  )! Especially to Rebecca because this is her first 30K race! If she's on your Facebook, go and give her some love!

August
18 - A Midsummer Night's Run - 30K, Toronto, ON - Vicky, Rebecca

Hi, everyone!

Vicky and Rebecca: Have fun this weekend; looking forward to the trip report!

Kimberly: We booked our fishing trip through Delaware Family Fishing. I would recommend them. I haven't seen anything about whale watching tours.

Mary: Glad to read that the toe is not fractured. :thumbsup2

AFM: I've been off the boards this week because my mother was hospitalized. I believe she may finally get the heart surgery for which we've been hoping so the hospitalization isn't necessarily a bad thing. Training has been difficult with all that is going on and I am experiencing lower back pain again now that my mileage has increased. I skipped my long run on Wednesday for a bit of extra rest but plan to do it tomorrow.

Enjoy the weekend and happy training!

Hi, everyone,

Kipp: :cheer2: Glad you are booked! How's the training coming?

AFM: My back pain in quite bad this morning. I've spent the past hour doing stretches and core strengthening exercises and the back pain is easing. I'll try my long run tomorrow morning before church. Really hoping to solve this soon. I don't want to return to PT yet if I can solve this on my own. Any advice?

Sometimes when I get moving, that helps to alleviate back pain. Just walking around will be enough. But if it's hurts too much to do that, try using a heat pack on it - maybe that will help the muscles to relax.

 Hope you feel better soon!

Good morning team! So glad it's Saturday!!!!!

Elizabeth: Sorry the back is hurting. Do you know what causes it? Is it your form, or gait or something? So sorry about your mom. I'm glad she will be getting the surgery she needs though.

Vicky: Good luck today. I remember the pics of the bling you've gotten in the past from that race. Hope it continues!

Rebecca: Good luck with your first 30k. Let us know how it went.

Kipp: Maybe you'll just have to get your own magnet or bumper sticker made. I've done it in the past.

Mary: Great news about the toe!!! I wonder what made it hurt so bad?

Lynn: Hope you're having a fantastic weekend!!!

AFM: I have managed to hurt my back from too much bike riding. I did another 20 mile ride yesterday after my walk and about half way through, the outside of my lower back started hurting. I have a new road bike and I am wondering if the serious lean into the handlebars is just something I need to get used to. Oh well, just something else to deal with.

Harrison's cross country is going well, except that his Sever's disease is acting up. We knew it would be and that he'd just have to work through the pain.

I'm skipping my walk today. The dog will live. I think I'm just going to do some interval running later. Plus, clean this messy house. Just 2 more days until my school starts. Yikes!!!

Hey guys!

Not much new with me. Just trying to not gain 60 lbs with this pregnancy  The baby is a girl and doing fine from what they tell me. We have a name picked out - Regan Aurora Baker princess:

Vivky - Are you going for a PR this trip? Oh I guess you guys are prob running now. I think I remember you telling me that the 30K was your fastest time that you used for your coral placement. Hope you have a great race!!

Rebecca - GL today on your first 30K!! :yay:

Tandy - I wonder that about road bikes too. My DH wants a drop handle bike now that he is riding more, but he is 6' 7" and already has a bad back. Let us know how you feel once you get accustomed to it...it might just be a "break-in" issue like you said.

Kipp - Congrats on registering! I love that feeling you get of butterflies when you hit that submit button! YAY!!!!

Elizabeth - Sorry to hear about your mom. My mom has to have surgery the week we come home from Disney. It is hard to care for a parent...I'll be thinking you both of you!

Lynn - What kind of rollers to you have in your basement? Are they loud? We had considered buying some to put in our garage, but it sits directly under the kids room and we were worried it would wake them.

Dave - I have seen your updates a bit on the ol' FB although I just browse on there very infrequently. I see you are healing up and back to racing. Glad to hear that...now stay UNINJURED!! LOL :thumbsup2

AFM - Just getting ready to run my measly 3 miles this morning at a snails pace...lol. I only get out about 2-3 times a week now and run -4 miles at a time depending on how I am feeling. I may up my miles a bit now that the weather is cool, but I really have to be careful to not over-do anything. My work has been horrible this summer and my normal stress running is obsolete since I can't "run mad" and burn it off. The slow stuff does help, but not as much as running hard. Oh well. I am blessed to still be able to get out there so thats what I do!!

Hope everyone has been well!!
:grouphug:

Eva: So glad to hear from you!!! Yay for a girl! And I love the name! She is bound to be princess material! :) I think it is great that you are getting 3 runs in each week. That is going to pay off big time later on in the third trimester.

Vicky/Rebecca: Tell us about the 30K adventure! We are looking forward to your race reports. I think it is so cool you met my buddy Joe at the race. :)

AFM: I ran 16 miles on Saturday -- these Long Runs just keep getting longer! This was my longest yet, and I was doing great until the last 3 miles when I ran out of steam. But I pushed through and got it done! It is in the books (and at a 11:15/mm pace too). So I am happy! Then I followed that with a 3.18 mile recovery run this morning (10:46mm pace). 27 miles for the week. Is it bad that I am happy that this coming week is a cutback week? LOL

Do you have a Chiro? You might check to make sure something isn't out of place. And get a good massage! That always helps me.

Good luck on your Long Run. Working the Core definitely helps with the back but take care not to over-strain it while it is in spasm.

Yay!!! We are at POP too. Can't wait for the 'reunion' in January!

How are things going in your training for the Indy Half in November?

Hey everyone we are back. Had a great holiday started with a visit from Jeff, Stacy and Alicia, then it was off to Vegas. Don't ever feel the need to go back, last time I was there was 2001 and it has changed alot and not for the better however, we made the best of it and had a great time. Highlight for this Canadian is going to the Gun Shop, I have never even touched a gun in my entire life unless you count a water gun :rolleyes1 but I shot a Glock 19 and a Beretta automatic rifle it was so cool, will later post photos on FB when my DD gets up.

Will try to catch up later need to unpack and get back to reality since I am back at work tomorrow. Today will include stocking up the fridge with healthy foods and getting back in the swing of trainning. I have a half on Oct 14th.

I have decided to register later today for the 5K and officially be Dopey!!!!

Vicky sorry didn't get your texts till yesterday and I did respond but I think you would have been doing your 30K.....congrats!!!

Have a great day all.

To Multiple peoples: I actually registered for Pluto pluto: (5K & 1/2) before the price increase. In the past couple of weeks I've snagged some "decent" flight prices and then put my deposit down for my room at Pop!

Interesting thought about getting a custom magnet made.

Rick - I've actually been quite "bad" I hadn't run or walked for the past 12 days! A little more on this in a bit. I had briefly thought about going for a standard room in Art of Animation, but I procrastinated too long and they were all booked. I'm still happy I'm in Pop! and I've requested a top floor room again.

AFM - I had a callous on my right foot for a very long time, right behind my first toe. It had been a lot worse, due to a very old pair of work shoes I had been wearing had worn a deep spot right in that location. Well, a couple of weeks ago I developed a blister UNDER said callous. Me, being stupid, did exactly what you're NOT supposed to do. I cut it off. Now I was lucky in the fact that the skin must have already started healing, as it wasn't raw underneath.

I went out for my run yesterday for the first time since it had pretty much healed up and for the first time since I started running, I didn't have any pain in my right toes!

Yesterdays run was also great due to the fact that it was in the mid to low 70's! I was VERY surprised that I put in a couple of stints that were at mid to low 15's per mile and I was able to go much further during each stint.

This weeks Plan: Monday is rest day, Tuesday 3 miles, Wednesday 3 miles at pace, Thursday 3 miles, Friday Rest, Saturday 5 miles.

Now, Wednesday is my big question mark for me. I'm not sure what pace I'm looking to train for. I'd like to think my goal pace is going to be in the 12:30mm area... that just seems so far away from where I am now though. I guess it's not so bad, being as that is my goal. IF I were able to hit that pace, I'd be able to shave an hour off my time from the WDW Half in January...

Hi team. Hope everyone's doing well.

Kipp: Glad you are back to running. I am really good at not going to the doctor, handling things myself, and then, suffering the consequences.

Kim: Congrats on going Dopey. You are brave! I too will never go back to Vegas. I went in 1992 and have had no interest since.

Rick: Those long runs will just continue to get longer, and longer and longer. There's nothing that can be done about it. I guess you could stop running marathons, huh? :lmao:

Eva: Congratulations! How exciting that you're going to have a little girl!!!! I'm glad to hear that you are still running, but it's smart to slow it down and lower those miles drastically.

AFM: I was wrong about my back. I had forgotten how I really hurt it, which was by pulling a metal picnic table out of our neighborhood pool (stupid HOA board of directors, why did I sign up for this?). The table had filled with water and I pulled it out with Harrison. Then, the next day, when I went bike riding, my back was hurting. Surprise, surprise.

Got a short 8 mile bike ride in yesterday with Frank. Then, baseball all day for Harrison. I woke up at 4 this morning, ran 2 miles and walked 3.5, then went to my first day of nursing school. This is probably my last post for awhile because they scared me today with our schedule. In fact, I have over 100 pages of reading that I should be doing right now before I go to zumba.

Have a good one everybody.

Hi team!

Tandy - Ouch! Take it easy on your back this week. Do you have a Magic Bag or a heat pack that you can put on your back periodically? I don't know that much about Sever's disease but lots of pixiedust: for Harrison. Has he started school yet or does that start in September?

Kipp - Congrats on getting a good price on flights! Do you normally drive? Ouch! I hope your foot is feeling better :) I didn't know that AA was booked ... I guess I'm going to look at the other value resorts.

Kim - No worries! I sent you an email and got your out of office message so I knew. You shot a gun? :o Wow! Yay for registering for Depey! Which training plan are you using for the Scotia half?

Rick - WTG on your 16 miler! Great pace! I'm still working on my RR. Will post when it's up.

Eva - Congrats! That's so exciting that you're going to have a little girl :) I love the name you have picked out too! Hopefully work gets better in September. Do you know if you can meet up when I'm connecting?

Elizabeth - Lots of pixiedust: How's your back feeling?

AFM - I went to the gym at did a post race flush workout yesterday - lots of band work, stretching and then we did about 5 minutes of cardio at the end. I have a massage on Thursday which I'm looking forward to. I will probably not run until this weekend and then onto the DL 1/2.

I did a recipe for Cereal Milk Popsicles. Actually I was just trying to cut back on sugar and figured the milk would keep longer this way LOL If you have chance, check it out here. Hopefully my RR will be done in a bit.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

We are staying at Pop for Sept and then again in January. I got a great military rate. Still not as good as I used to get renting DVC points but doable. I think we are there from the 8th of January to the 18th.

Kimmer, I lived in Vegas for 9 years and own both those guns you shot, along with about 10 long guns and a Tom Cat 32 auto pocket size automatic.

I'm dropping back to 3 milers as my max distance for a training walk for a while. Further than that becomes painful and take to long to recover from right now. I still do an additional 2 good gym workouts and stretch every day.

Good luck with the race princesses.:flower3:

Confession time here. I wimped out on my short run this morning. Stomach just didn't feel good. The bad thing is that it may have been my last opportunity for a while. May try to get up before dawn tomorrow and just do the TM, as I am subbing tomorrow at the preschool.

Dave....glad to hear that you have rooms reserved for your upcoming trips. I've enjoyed reading you walking tips on Facebook. The last time I went out, I kept thinking of you and "posture, posture."

Kipp...what part of Indy do you live in? I have a sister near Ft. Ben and a daughter in Broad Ripple.

Yeah, the AA standard rooms were no longer available when I put my payment in with my travel planner. I was considering driving down, as my figures were showing that even at $4.50/gal it would be cheaper to drive. So I was glad to check in and see that there were finally some decent prices. No where near as good as I got last year, but I'll take it. (last year I snagged a Delta round trip for $150!!) With living in Indy now, I can make it from my door to Pop Century lobby in about 18 hours, maybe a little less if I don't have to stop too often. If I would have ended up driving down, I would have given myself an extra day of vacation and gone down on Wednesday and back on Tuesday.

I'm on the southeast side, outside of the Beach Grove area.

AFM - Dad just returned home after being away for a week and a half, so he's requested that we do our weekly weigh in tomorrow.

My week 2 training plan is moving along, I did my 3 miles tonight and I've got a 3 mile pace run for tomorrow night.

My Tifosi Tyrant sunglasses arrived yesterday and tonight was my first run with them. It was so nice having sunglasses that weren't bouncing around and sliding down my nose all the time from sweat. I was worried at first that they would feel too tight, but once I was out on my run with them, they were fine and I really kinda just forgot about them until I got back home and it was really dark inside with them on. :)

I needed toner for my color laser printer here at home and when I ordered the color toners from Newegg, I got a $5 certificate back from them on EACH! So I was able to knock the price on the sunglasses down to $30.

I also found out today, that apparently, when I bump my Garmin 405CX onto the floor it seems to suck the battery dry. I think it may have kept the backlight on for some reason and drained it all the way down. So for the first time in months since I've had it, I ran without it. I kinda felt naked without it! I've gotten so used to wearing the watch and HR strap during each run and walk!

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Will check out the recipe!

Dave - Good luck with the training!

Kim - Glad you had fun on your trip!

Mary - Hope you feel better!

Tandy - We did have a fantastic weekend - Thanks! Good luck to Harrison with his cross country.

Rick - Great job on the training!

Elizabeth - PD for your mother and for your back.

Rebecca - Hope the 30K went well!

Eva - Great to hear from you again! We do not have rollers, we have a spin bike - not it is not loud - actually, we are thinking to upgrading to “Tour de France” bike trainer - has a computer and maps and will change gears and elevation. I thought most kids would sleep thru any background noise. Good luck with the pregnancy!

Kipp - Good to get all those little details out of the way!

AFM - We had a great time at the MS ride, rode 80 miles on Sat., in 7+ hours, then 50 miles on Sun in 3+ hours. Saturday had some monster hills! Sunday was downhill for the first 40 miles, then rolling for the next 10 miles. Weather was beautiful, no wind to speak of and cooler than it usually is. We drove back home on Monday, then spent from 6am to 8pm Tues as election judges. That was fun, but no exercise. Yesterday we harvested grapes - 30 pounds - spent about 6 hours yesterday on them processing into grape juice, and got about half way thru, so will spend today on them also. No exercise other than dog walk since Sunday - hope to get out for short bike ride today, really feel like I need it. This weekend we are headed down to Boulder and Denver, CO for the USA Pro Challenge Bike Race (Colorado’s version of Tour de France).

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hi all

Sorry I have been MIA lately. My running has not been the best lately which lead me to be frustrated …I was losing motivation and did not want to run much less talk about it. I was quitting runs early, and what were supposed to be easy pace runs felt really difficult. I think it was a combination of a head cold, insomnia, and very high humidity. Anyways, the head cold is clearing and the humidity broke so I am thinking I am breaking out of this rut.

I signed up to do the Cobequid Trail half marathon this weekend in Nova Scotia just to get my competitive juices flowing again as I have not participated in a race since June…maybe I need to break my marathon training up with an actual event.

Speaking of my marathon, it was in the national news this week for some controversy about a rule change. Last year a 9 year old boy ran the full, and this year, they put in age restrictions so that the minimum age is 18 or 16 with parental approval. The child, who now has two full marathons under his belt and his family are now bringing the policy change to the media. Per the family, the boy was given clearance from his family doctor.

Here is a link to the story:

One side of the debate cites health concerns that a person of that age is not physically developed and partaking in such an event could be detrimental to the development of their muscles, bones, tendons, and even heart. We do have laws in place to protect children in other ways (smoking, drinking, seat belts, ect), why not an extreme event such as a marathon?

The opposing side argues that there is an obesity epidemic developing in children in North America, so we should not discourage physical activity. Furthermore, they point to the fact that running is much safer than contact sports that kids of that age play such as hockey and football, which could easily give kids concussions and other injuries.

Any thoughts on this issue? Do the marathon you participate in have age limits? Disney does, right?

Personally speaking, I think I side with the marathon committee. As my mileage is ramping up in preparation for my first marathon, I can tell it is taking a bit of a toll on my 38 year old body. If there were studies that suggest potential issues for a growing body, I would tend to believe them. On the other hand, physical activity and running should not be discouraged. Maybe a compromise would to encourage and emphasize 5 to10K events for minors?

Good question Robbie! It reminds me of the story of an eight-year-old girl who ran 2,000+ km back in 2008 to celebrate the Beijing Olympics. I think the distance ended up being equivalent to 1.5 marathons each day. Not sure if her parents made her run in the hopes that she would make the Olympics one day but she had said she loved running. There were people who said that the running would stunt her growth. I think the same arguements are made about weight lifting in your teen years and how power lifts and max lifts can stunt growth.

I think anything in excess is bad for your body no matter what your age is - food, exercise etc. Who knows? Maybe this kid is able to do the long distances because he's biomechanic or genetically blessed. There is a lot of training involved in preparing for a marathon but if he follows a novice plan, does it involve more hours than someone who plays on a competitive hockey team? I'm not sure what heat exhaustion refers to in the article because I assume that's a risk anyone takes exercising outdoors in the summer, young or old. If his father runs, I would like to think he knows about being properly hydrated.

I'm guessing from the marathon committee point of view, it could be restrictions placed on them from their insurance company. But then why not restrict runners over the age of 65? Or maybe they worry that his participation will encourage others kids to enter who aren't as well prepared or respectful as he is of the distance and training involved. Regardless, I hope he keeps running and training - much better than being a couch potato :thumbsup2

And I know the running funk you speak of. I've been there - sometimes all you need is a short break or something like a race to put you back in the game. Hope your race goes well this weekend! Fingers crossed for good weather and lots of pixiedust: for your cold!
