:simba: Hakuna Matata Team Bios :simba:

Windwalker, aka Dave aka Panda- I'm 58 and live in a small town in Kentucky. I don't run I walk, race walk actually. I have qualified for another shot at the National Senior Olympics. Married to Sally.

es45 aka Elizabeth- I'm 42 and married with 2 young daughters. I ran my first 13.1 in the 2011 Princess Half.

Pudge The Fish, aka Emily- My DH and I will be doing the DL half in Sept. This will be our first half marathon. I still consider myself new to running, though I've done 2 5k (including the 2009 DL 5k) and one 10k.

Villians_Rock, aka Eva – I am 31 years old, married to Jordan (proud WISH supporter) and have just recently had our first baby, Gage. We currently live near Cleveland, OH. I'm a full time staffing coordinator for Continental Airlines and my hubby sells Harley Davidsons. I ran my first race in 2007 and have since ran 5Ks, 10Ks, one half marathon and completed the Disney Full Marathon in 2009. Before the baby, I was most comfortable running and training at a half marathon distance.

GirltheGecko aka Hope- I grew up in the Pittsburgh area. When I was a teenager, I was heavily into martial arts, unfortunately due to school and time, I had to quit. I met Nick, moved to NH, and I gained some weight. I watched my mother struggle with obesity all her life, so Nick's family and I decided to work at trying for a half marathon at WDW.

flipflopmom, aka Taryn – I will be 35 on Sept. 5. I am a Kindergarten Teacher, working on my master's degree in my "spare” time. Married for 12 years, have 2 girls. Oldest is 10, and a competitive gymnast. Her gym is 45 minutes away, so I spend a lot of time on the road. Youngest is 3, and a tons of fun! I haven't run a race yet, but looking for a 5K.

LynnG, aka Lynn, (of Lynn and Scott)- 60 years old, retired, we are both Disneyholics. We have been members of DVC since it started. I am a walker, I used to try to run, but knee surgery last August which I am still trying to recover from, I only walk now. I have done several half marathons, mostly Disney ones. I have 2 malamutes that are my walking companions at home.

MaryJ aka Mary- I am 53 years old, and live in a small town in Southwestern Indiana. I will be married to DH (Ken) for 34 years in July. We have 3 daughters and 2 granddaughters. I walk/run my races. I did my first big race (WDW Half) when I was 52. Before that I had done only a few 5K's, mostly walking.

Motomiker, aka Mike – I have lived in and around Lake in the Hills Illinois. I have worked in the grocery business for almost 20 years. Married in 2008 to my wife (Liz). One son (Robert), working on baby number two. I was diagnosed with colon cancer in the fall of 2009 and had surgery. I am still cancer free! My other interests are varied: Disney nut, Disney pins collector, love movies (mostly Sci-fi), scrapbooking, travel, a New England Patriots fan, and 5ks . I did my first adventure race recently, and am planning some more.

Nikkilala, aka Nikki- Married to Ryan at WDW in 2007. Currently a Physical Therapist Assistant student graduating in 2012. Is a wogger (walker with a little jogging mixed in) Lives in South West Michigan where she was born and raised! Loves Disney and will do anything for an excuse to travel there, including a half marathon

Saylan – I'm from the frosty north of Canada. I'm very new to running (officially started October 14, 2010). I'm training for the Disney Princess 1/2 and it'll be my first official marathon of any length. I'm a Disney addict (been 16 times). I figured if anything can motivate me to run it would be Disney. I live with my partner (and Disney virgin) and a demon of a cat.

piglet24, aka Regina- I grew up in Idaho and married my “birthday buddy”, Kyle, in 2006. I started running to help manage some stress about a year and a half ago, and have continued because I enjoy it. Of course, I love Disney and am always happy to have another reason to go!

DisneyGerry, aka Gerry - Lives in Celebration, FL, transplant from MD after numerous vacations to visit central FLA. Trying to kick up my race schedule this year starting with the Disney Half in January. Play and work in the theme park corridor

bunnyfoo, aka Vicky - My name is Vicky and I live in Toronto, Canada. I started running back in 2008 so I could lose weight become more active. I wasn't into low carb diets but it seemed like a lot of runners had great abs AND they ate carbs. I thought "Hey I can do that!" :goodvibes I started as an indoor treadmill runner and eventually worked my way outside and signed up for my first race - the Minnie 15K. As they say, the rest is history! I have had my share of bumps, bruises and sprains but have had a lot of fun along the way and have met a lot of great people including everyone on Hakuna Matada! Three years later, running, working out and healthy eating have all become a part of my lifestyle. My other interests are movies, reading, road trips and baking!

:yay: The Biggest Loser Challenge! :yay:

We'll weigh in every Friday and there will be one winner for the biggest percentage of weight lost. As well, everyone will get points for the week and the person with the most points will be another winner :) Everyone will be responsible for keeping track of their own points. I like to use an Excel sheet because it makes it easy to keep track of the points.

And so long as there's interest, we can have this go on until the end of August!

Here's how the points will be awarded:

30 minutes of exercises daily - 1 point
Drinking 8 glasses of water a day (8oz each) - 1 point
5 servings of fruits and veggies daily - 1 point
Trying a new food/dish each week - 1 point (ideally this should be a healthy food) :)
Taking a daily vitamin - 1 point
Each pound of weight lost - 1 point (ie. 5lbs=5 points)

Bonus points
Person who has the biggest percentage of weight loss - 1 point
Successfully avoiding the week's temptation - 1 point (up to each inidivudal)
Completing my exercise of the week - 1 point x day

You can bank your exercise minutes so for example if you worked out for an hour on Monday and used Tuesday as a rest day, you'd still have 30 minutes over two days. I know people like rest days so I don't want to penalize anyone.

Exercise for the week: Planks! Do 4 sets of 30 seconds, taking as much rest as you need in between.

Starting weight (week 1)

September

3 - Disneyland Family 5K - Liz, Emily & DH
4 - Disneyland Half Marathon - MaryJ & DH, Mike & Liz, Lynn & Scott, Saylan & DBF, Emily & DH

Hi team! Ok I think I've got everything set up for September! I can't believe it's that time of year already - I see everyone at the office supply store stocking up for school or classes. My baking class starts up again at the end of the month - but I get to go shopping at the kitchen supply store LOL

I went and did the boot camp class last night. It was at 8PM and it's a bit later than I'm use to working out at but it was pretty fun. I think there were about 20 people and we were split into 3 groups and the room was divided into three stations.

Each station had a series of 4-5 exercises - the first station was focused on arms so there were TRX rows, pushups, goblet squats and weighed rows. The second station was cardio - burpees, setups, lunges and military presses. The final station was weights - kettlebell swings, sandbag pull, and different kind of step up exercise. We had to do each exercise for 1 minute which doesn't seem like much but I found the arms station to be the hardest and the cardio to be the easiest.

My trainer is pushing me to go back for Saturday and I probably will since I should give my weight loss a kick start :)

After the boot camp, I went to see "The Debt" which was pretty good. My friend had a hard time following it but I thought the plot was pretty straight forward. It's a suspense so it's a bit of a slower pace but still moves along nicely. I thought that Helen Mirren and Sam Worthington were awesome!

Dave - Enjoy your day of rest! I've only got one trip scheduled to WDW this year as well.

Mike - I'd be interested to know more about the blood clots as well. I'm glad that you're cleared to go running and that Liz doesn't mind your compression shorts! Safe travels :) I'll post the challenge details on the main page - jump in anytime when you get back.

Emily - I didn't know that the Cheesecake Factory has a low cal menu. That's fantastic! Does it include desserts too? Good job on getting your running in! I know how hard it can be while you're in the midst of packing for a trip.

Lynn - Safe travel to you and Scott! Will you guys be scream teaming or walking the race?

Rick - I always wanted to go to space camp when I was younger! Your son must have had an awesome time!!

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

My bags are packed,
I'm ready to go! (apologies to Peter, Paul and Mary)

Mike...so glad you got the green light to run! I promise not to point and laugh if I see you the morning of the race!

Lynn and Scott...Will try to look for you at Packet pick up. I'll try to remember to wear my DIS shirt.

Vicky...I might be interested in the BL challenge going forward. I just didn't want to try to jump in while I was still training for the half. Like Mike, it would be helpful if you would post all the particulars again.

It seems that every time I do a half, I worry about something that might keep me from finishing. This time it's the pain in my glutes that I've been having. Got a massage on Tuesday and the therapist found a spot on my IT band that she thinks might be the culprit. I'm thinking about visiting the KT booth and getting it taped while I'm there. Anybody here have any experience with that?

Hope to see everyone at DL!

You're like me Mary ... I've done very few races without experiencing some kind of bump, strain or ache along the way. I think it's just a part of training for a long distance race. Or in my case, not stretching enough  *ahem* but we won't talk about that

See if you can bring The Stick along with you. That's great in place of a foam roller to losen the ITB. You may need someone else like DH to give you a hand with it - I always find it's easier to have someone else do help with stretches and massages because I never can apply as much pressure as I need to. Same with the taping - it's easier for someone else to apply than it is for you. Speaking of...

I got my ankles taped up at the KT booth at WDW in January. Go earlier in the day to get a faster appointment. I showed up around 12 and there was a 45 min wait. It wasn't a big deal because I walked around the expo and grabbed a bite to eat in the meantime. I had both ankles taped and they asked that I buy something because I was getting two body parts taped. I think it was $20 for two rolls or $14 for one. It's kind of sneaky because the box is labeled $12.95 or something like that.

They say that the tape will last a couple days while you shower etc. but I've found that it's best to get taped the day before your race. I tend to be a bit sensitive to the adhesive in bandaids and such and the times that I've gone two days before, the tape starts coming off the day of the race. From general movement, showering, removing clothing and it's just generally itchy by the second day.

Hope that helps! Safe travels and good luck :cheer2:

Good luck to all the DL racers this weekend; can't wait to read all about it!:cheer2:

Happy Sept. This is a rest day for me, well rest from training still had to work 9 hours.

Tomorrow Sally is heading off to Miss to visit family for the weekend. So I'll be heading off to train when she leaves out in the morning. Looking for another PR on the 4 mile hill route. Last friday was 45:15 so I'll try to get under 45 min tomorrow.

Then resting and working on Saturday and Sunday a 12 mile bike ride. Monday I get to toe the starting line with some of the best walkers in the area. Wish me luck.

Have a magical evening.

Dave:hippie:

Sally had to cancel her trip to Miss to see family. They are going to be hammered by the storm this weekend.

My workout was a huge success, another 10 sec off my post injury 4 mile PR. I was kinda hoping for a sub 45 min but I ended up with a 45:05, ever closer to breaking the 25 min barrier. The course I train on is very hilly and I do that to gain strength as well as speed.

I'm so glad I'm able to dream again, and pursue those dreams.

Lots of our Disney buds are with the mouse this weekend.

Someone eat a mickey bar for me.

Dave:hippie:

Hello team!

Vicky - Cheescake Factory just started rooling it out, it's called the Skinnylicious menu. I don't think there are desserts on it. I also had to specifically ask for the menu when we went, so I'm glad I knew about it beforehand.

Elizabeth - Thanks!

Dave - WTG on your workout!

AFM - Just a few more things to do around the house and then it's off to DL.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Emily

Just a quick post - we have finished the 5K, we walked with Mike and Liz, and some others, Marcia, Dana and her group. it was the slowest race we have ever done, Marcia let the pace, 20:30 pace , finished in 1:02:35. At first it was too crowded to go faster, then when we could go faster, we still kept the slow pace. It was fun, lots of characters, lots of backstage time.

Time to hit the parks!

Hi Team!

Good Luck to everyone participating in the DL races this weekend!!!!

Vicky- LOL, well I am positive you could do it! It took me about 10-15 minutes to really get the feel of the instructor’s movements. At first I was like, “What is going on? I’m so confused!” I could not keep up with what she was doing for the life of me. As long as you’re willing to let loose, you could do it! My DH is the best. The instructor said, “You’ve got a keeper there.” Yes I do! I would definitely do it again at Kyle’s work, but it made my shin really hurt which I can’t afford to have happen right now. So for now my priority will be running. I’m not doing a specific plan for Goofy. It’s more a combination of a half marathon and marathon plan I put together to do LSRs on Saturday and Sunday. We will see how it goes. I’m glad the wedding was ok. I can’t believe they gave you a crappy cupcake. Lame. Why are you thinking about pulling out of MCM in October? I’m up for continuing BL in September. It helps my motivation and holds me accountable. That’s cool your baking class starts soon. I love to see your pics on FB after you’ve made something. Boot camp sounds interesting and I’m sure 1 minute would have been plenty challenging for me.

Emily- They turned out really nice. Kyle and I have been throwing around ideas about creating shirts for January but have not yet decided on anything. Thanks for the encouragement on the weight loss. Kyle is up for pretty much anything, except karaoke. His coworkers gave him a hard time (because we did it at the station where he works) and he just laughed. It didn’t even faze him. I love Cheesecake Factory. When did they get a low calorie menu? What did you order? I might have to check that out the next time we get to a Cheesecake Factory. (Since we moved the closest one went from 25 minutes away to 4 hours away.) I read the other day that they are one of the worst offenders for high calorie and fatty foods. Apparently one of their pastas is one of the worst dishes.

Mike- I’m glad you were cleared to run this weekend.

Dave- Good luck with your training this weekend. It’s so nice to hear how well your training is going!! It’s awesome! I’m sorry to hear Sally had to cancel her trip.

AFM, today is a rest day. But here are my points:

30 min exercise: 1 point
8 glasses of water: 1 point
Fruits/Veggies: 0
Trying a new food/dish: 1 point
Taking a daily vitamin: 0
Exercise of week: 0- I don’t even remember what it was??
Avoid temptation: 1 point
Weight: 139 even. So I think that is a loss of 1.2 from last week. Let’s hope it doesn’t go back up.

The zumba class last week exacerbated some pain I was having in my left shin so this week it’s been sore during and after runs. So I’m trying to take care of that and stretch more. I’m still wearing compression socks or sleeves for every run so hopefully that will help some too. Oh, and I bought a notebook today and am going to start a food journal to keep track of my food intake. That way I can make sure I am watching what I am eating and if I need to make more food adjustments, I will see it in writing and be able to do so. No major plans for Labor Day weekend aside from a 3 mile run tomorrow and 6 mile run Sunday. I hope everyone has a great weekend!

**I wrote the above last night and then couldn’t log on, so sorry it’s going up today!

Lynn- Thanks for the update on the 5k! I’m glad you all finished and had fun!!! Have fun at California Adventures!

Oh my goodness, I don't post until the 4th and there are already 2 pages to catch up on! ;)

Regina: I do really great journaling my food. You are right, when it's written in front of you, there's no denying where the gain is coming from, or, hopefully, where the loss is coming from. Sorry zumba hurt you. Bad, bad zumba! ;)

Lynn & Mike & Emily & Mary: Can't wait to hear today's race report! Hope you're all having a fabulous run and vacation.

Dave: Sorry about Sally missing her trip, but better to be safe, right? I know I say it a lot, but you are just doing an amazing job on your times. It's great to see the numbers continue to drop! :thumbsup2

Mary: Sorry I didn't see your post earlier. I got taped up at the expo too. Totally worth it. It saved my ankles for both races. Hope you were able to.

Vicky: Bootcamp sounds awesome. I hope you went yesterday. I run and zumba, but I've never felt like I got a better workout than when I was doing bootcamp. I know I could just do all the exercises here, but I don't push myself unless I pay for it, apparently.

Rick: Which space camp did your son go to? My son did one this summer and just loved it!:thumbsup2

AFM: Well, my Labor Day weekend camping trip was cut short. We had an amazing first night. Got everything set up, realized we were super far from the bathrooms, which meant a lot of slow walking for me (oh boy), and roasted marshmallows and dogs. The next day, the boys went for their first of what was supposed to be many bike rides. I got on my bike and went down the block a little, felt like maybe I could do it. So, at about 10 am, Frank and I did the trail (it's 4 miles around a beautiful lake, which is why we camp here). I went slow, without my boot, and I was fine, with no pain, until the very end. Not bad. I was going to do another one later that night, if I could. Then, we went for a walk, again very slow (stupid boot). We decided to go drive to this Amish tourist trap town, got lost, found a little town with a carnival instead. Let Harrison ride rides and play boardwalk games and I almost gave in and tried my first deep friend twinkie, but decided not to. Anyway, while we were at the carnival, it started pouring buckets. By the time we got back to the campground, everything was drenched, beds, chairs, everything. We stood under our awning for about 15 minutes and just said screw it. We threw all the wet stuff in the van and came home!
So, now I still have 2 days of long weekend, with nothing to do but study!!!!:woohoo: I think I may ride my bike though, now that I know I can do little rides. Of course, in my sleep I twisted the wrong way and hurt my leg again. :headache:
Oh, and I forgot to add that, after denying the twinkie temptation, I came home and ate the house apart. I gained 3 pounds overnight I ate so much! Leave it to me. If I'd just eaten the twinkie, I would have been fine.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Thank you Tandy. Sounded like my camping trips. My idea of roughing it now is a decent hotel.

I have a race tomorrow so I'm just relaxing and doing a lot of stretching today. I hope to have a PR at tomorrow's race, the best I've walked the 2 mile there was in 2008 in 21:29. It begins and ends with a hill. I think before the year is over I'll be sub 10 mpm for a 2 mile race, but tomorrow I'll be pleased with a 21:59. I've only been training well post injury and illness for 3 months so I'm happy with how it's going.

The big test for me will be at the Goofy, if I can walk the half in 2:45 and the full around 5:30 and feel good after then I'll be well on my way to a super good 2012 season.

Have a magical weekend y'all.

Rick: Which space camp did your son go to? My son did one this summer and just loved it!:thumbsup2

Ryan and I went to a Parent/Child Space Camp Program 2 weeks ago. I am not sure which of us had more fun! It was really awesome! Sharing the experience with him made it all the more special. He totally wants to go next summer for one of their full week programs! :yay:

Vicky: They have a bunch of adult programs too! You should check it out! You won't be disappointed! :)

In Chicago there is a 1-mile race at the Navy Pier that I am going to run on the 18th. Thought it might be fun and I want to see how fast I can run 1 mile.

Has anyone run a 1-mile race? Is there a strategy (other than run as fast as you can for a mile) to it like a negative split at the 1/2 mile mark or something? Just curious.

I have a 10K six days afterwards so this going to be my last 'fast run' before tapering off for that race. :)
