Hakuna Matada - Speedy September

Hello team!

Regina - I usually avoid Cheescake Factory becuase I've heard how high cal and fatty their food is. They just started rolling out the new menu in the last month, you can check on their website if a location has the new menu yet. DH and I shared a flatbread and a salad.

Dave - Congrats on your race!

Saylan - Hope you are feeling better. PD for your boyfriend's feet, I bruised my foot last year and it hurt so bad. Sorry, I don't have any advice past what's already been said. That is terrible!

Lynn - Sorry we missed you at the 5k. I kept looking for lime green shirts but it was never a Wish one. I hope you had a fun trip.

Tandy - Good to hear the boot is off and you don't need surgery. Good luck on the ACT!

Mike/ Mary/ Saylan - Hope you had a good time at DL. Sorry I missed you.

Vicky - Hope you're knee is still feeling better!

AFM - I had a good time at DL for the most part.

The 5k was fun, but very crowded so it was hard to run. We stopped for pictures, although I was sad that Darth Vader wasn't out.

The half went well. We finished in 3:01, which was better than last year. We stopped for picutres and a bathroom break, so subtracting stops it took us under 3 hours, which I was excited about. The weather was good for the race. We went to the corrals, we were in E, as soon as possible so we didn't get stuck in a huge crowd. We used a slower pace through the parks because we knew it would be crowded and hard to get around people. We sped up once we got out on the streets. I felt pretty good throughout the race, there was one point after the stadium where I felt really tired but it passed quickly. My feet did hurt but it wasn't too bad. I was sore after the race and had some pains, but it was nowhere near as bad as last year.

We went the parks Sunday afternoon and Monday. It was so hot and crowded and I was very tired so this was probably the least enjoyable part of the weekend. We wanted to watch World of Color Sunday night but I was so tired that I knew I couldn't have stayed up that late. My mistake was not taking a nap before we went to the parks. We did get to ride the new Little Mermaid ride and Star Tours, so I was very happy about that.

I've spent the rest of the week resting and I haven't worked out all. It's also been over 100 deg so I didn't want to go out for a run. Although, I managed to lose 2 lb this week even though I haven't exercised and haven't eaten that well. Last night, we went to see the new Cirque du Soleil show at the Kodak theatre in Hollywood. We both enjoyed it.

I think DH and I will go for a run tonight when he gets home from work. Don't have many plans for the rest of the weekend, except to watch football tomorrow night.

Hope everyone has a good weekend,
Emily

Saylan if your tormentor decides to bother you at Disney rest assured that I'd love to meet him, as I'm sure several other guys on here would.

Feeling better today, good enough to do a brisk but easy 4 miler at about a 13 mpm pace. I'll do another 4 miler in the morning. I have a half marathon in a week and I hope to walk it under 2:45.

Have a restful evening y'all.

Dave:hippie:

Good Morning Team!

Dave - Glad to hear you are feeling better!

Tandy - Congrats on getting the boot off, take it easy on the running, do what PT tells you to do! Hope your ACT went well!

Emily - Nice race report. There were not many WISH shirts, I only saw one other one.

Saylan - Good luck with your harassment issue - no advice from here either - no experience with that.

AFM - We got out for bike ride yesterday - 16.5 miles - which felt good, my knee was feeling not getting the bike riding in, today it feels much better. Forgot to do points for Friday - again - I will claim the point for exercise, as we were on our feet walking in DL the whole week! I also will claim points for vitamins and water - so I guess that totals 3 points. (If I have to take off 2 points for weight gain, that makes 1 point total).

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Good Morning Team! So where is everyone?????

Weather has turned cooler here, although it does heat up in afternoon - cool mornings, today is really windy, so I do not think we will get out for bike ride, will have to hit the basement. Yesterday's ride was 22 miles. The bike rides are really helping the knee feel better!

Pixie Dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day all!

We were on the Sep 4 and Sep 8 sailing and saw the airlift that took place on Saturday the 7th. There were two Cast Members airlifted on the same Coast Guard helicopter. We were told by a ships officer that the two Cast Members decided to turn their 5k run into a 10k run, which took place after the regular one and about mid-day in very high heat. There were several runners, but two of them collapsed with heat stroke and dehydration and the ships doctor could not do enough for them. They were taken off on stretchers with IV's already inserted. One of our table mates saw them running, without the regular bib numbers that Guest wear. They were airlifted to a hospital in Miami.

We saw the two being put on the helicopters, and we were told the other information by one of the ships officers.

Great workout this morning. I met another walker for interval training and we did some decent 400m repeats. After the speed work when we were walking to cool down and practicing technique he was telling some of the things he learned at a race walk training clinic. I moved my armswing back a couple of inches and I was much better able to get the hip arm balance going. I'm a good local walker but I have always felt something just wasn't quite right, this may be the last piece to the puzzle. I'll know more tomorrow after I make the change for my 4 mile tempo walk.

When I tried that for just a couple of laps today I was going walking sub 11 min miles effortlessly. I'm excited about tomorrow's training. I also have the half marathon on Saturday, the USAF, so plenty of time then to practice then also during the race.

Great to read about the successful tweak that has cut some time and made walking smoother. It's very much in the efficiency of movement that allows greater and longer output from the body.

Have a great race on Saturday! :thumbsup2

Hi, all,

I haven't been able to post because we were first in DC to help DH's brother move and then in SC for my cousin's funeral.

My cousin committed suicide at the age of 44. Growing up we saw each other at my grandmother's house every weekend. Strange to realize that we had lost touch so profoundly that I had no idea what was really going on with him.

I woke up the next morning after hearing about his death with the worst feeling. Couldn't shake it so I went to the hotel gym and rode the bike there until that feeling subsided. A year ago I would have eaten my way through the grief. After the funeral most were either smoking or eating all of those desserts and fattening casseroles that the kind ladies of the church will bring over. So thankful to now have exercise as a form of therapy. Hope that this means I won't return to bad habits in the future when faced with a stressful situation.

Good Morning Team!

Gerry - glad you had a good trip, we did that 5K run on Castaway Cay one year and decided it started much too late and was much too hot, on later cruises, we did our own 5K much earlier in the morning.

Dave - Have a great race on Saturday!

Elizabeth - Sorry to hear about your cousins suicide, but great job on handling the grief with exercise rather than food!

AFM - Spent the day making grape jelly. Spent the 2 days before making the grape juice from our grapes to make the jelly! I had about 18 pounds of grapes, 5 quarts of grape juice which translates to 24 12oz jars of grape jelly. It may make up for no plums or crab apples this year. Actually, we have a few crab apples on the tree, but not enough to do anything with. I did get for a dog walk yesterday, but no bike ride because of the wind. Today we should get out for a good ride.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Good Morning Team!

It's been so long, again. Work has been non-stop & life just as busy.

Elizabeth, Very sorry to hear about your cousin.

Lynn, Did you do grapes last year? All I remember was plums. Do you do cherries?

Dave, It sounds like you are turning into quite an exercise machine.:thumbsup2

Sound like everyone is doing well with races/ weekly mileage and weightloss.

Nothing exciting to report. No races scheduled. Just getting in the weekly mileage. It's been nice taking a break. I have stayed true & not registered for 2012 but DH & I have already commited to each other we will be back for 2013.

Have a great day everyone.........Sue

I am saddened by your loss and will be keeping you and your family in my prayers.

I am so pleased to hear that running/exercise has been a positive way for you to manage your grief. Finding ways to feed your spirit and balance your life is a lifelong process for all of us. Be well!

Hi Team,

Just checking in and will post race reports soon. I'm still having to catch up on chores since the trip...

Elizabeth, I am very sorry for your loss and an thinking about you and your family.

-Mike

Elizabeth - I'm so sorry to hear about your cousin :( I'll be keeping you and your family in my thoughts  I'm glad that you went for a bike ride instead of using food as a source of comfort. I will have to keep that in mind the next time I reach for somethng sugary. I find the older I get, the easier it is to lose touch with extended family and friends. I also remember hanging out with my cousins every weekend and now we rarely see one another unless it's for a holiday.

Elizabeth: I am so sorry. I have dealt with suicide from a very loved family member, and although I don't know exactly what you're going through, I understand. Great job handling it with such positive means! :thumbsup2

Lynn: I love that you make your own jelly. I made my own cheese this week and feel such a sense of accomplishment!

Sounds like everyone else is doing great. I don't have much time to post. Sorry. I went to PT today for the first time. I have lost so much strength and range of motion in my leg that I just wanted to cry. Oh well.
ACT was horrible. I was old enough to be EVERYONE's mom and there wasn't enough time for the science. I think I did great on the other 3, but who knows. I have to wait until the end of Sept to find out how I did. Classes are crazy right now, so I will have to wait until this weekend to catch up with you guys. Sorry!

Elizabeth: so sorry to hear of your loss.

Dave: Wish I was going to USAF with you all this weekend.

Hi to everyone, life is just super busy this week but wanted to take a moment to read how everyone was doing and say hi.....so hi:flower3:

Have a great Day!!!!!

I did a half of a half maraton this morning during the Team panda group training walk. The time was 1:16 flat which means that was a 2:32 half marathon if I had kept that pace for the other half. This was a PR for this challenging course, my previous PR was 1:16:49. Now granted I couldn't have kept that pace right now for an entire half today but this is the first day I've practiced this new technique tweek and I'm still conjested from the cold I'm just getting over. Another team mate noticed another tweek I need to make that should help even more. I'm excited about the future and thinking I can break 5 hours for the marathon, walking, within the next 6 months. Maybe Disney???

Tomorrow is rest since I work days and have to pack for the trip on friday to the UASF half marathon and the fun in Dayton Ohio.

Kim I wish you and Mike were going also. There is going to be a big Ratkillin with food and lots of drink at the Greens after the race on Saturday, Party Pandas will be there, you would have fun, your kinda party.

Dave:hippie:

Good Morning Team!

Kim - Hi Kim, you have a great day also!

Dave - Good luck with your tweaks.

Mike - It was so much fun spending time with you and Liz!

Tandy - I used to make yoghurt, I think we made yoghurt cheese once, I remember hanging it in cheese cloth. It must be tough taking classes as an adult with kids! (I am old enough to think of college students as kids)

Sue - Yes we did grapes last year, not quite as many, and we have 2 cherry trees that produce enough for a few cherry pies each year. This year we got only about 3 plums, so no plum butter this year - that is OK, we still have plenty from last year. The crab apple did not produce enough to deal with this year either. But the grapes really took off this year.

AFM - Cold and raining all day yesterday - more like winter than summer. High of 50 degrees, this morning is more of the same but supposed to clear up later and high of 56 today. Will warm up over the weekend. Got downstairs and got in an hour on the spin bike yesterday, may wait to see if it clears up enough to take bikes out today. Tomorrow we are headed to Colorado for a “Tour de Vineyards” - this is not a drinking ride, just riding in the vineyard area near Grand Junction. But the ride is followed by a wine fest. We will be back on Sunday.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Saylan.....Hope things have settled down for you.

Pudge, Scott and Liz...Sorry we couldn't connect at DL. DH and I mostly did our own thing, but I did make it to the DIS meet at the bakery. There were about 6 or 7 of us there.

Elizabeth...my deepest sympathies on the loss of your cousin.

Dave...I've noticed on Facebook that you've joined the GEWRC page. Any chance you'll be coming this way for one of their events?

AFM...Haven't done any exercise to speak of since returning from DL. Got back on a Wednesday, and left again on Sunday to go to a trade show with Ken. Just got back yesterday afternoon. Plan to get back to the gym next week.

Mary - You and Ken are racking up the FF points for sure! How was DL and the WISH meet?

Lynn - Safe travels! Sounds like a fun trip! I was going to say that I don't think I'd make it very far on the bikes if there was wine involved. I'm really a lightweight when it comes to drinking. The grape jelly sounds yummy! I guess it was just a better season/weather for grapes than anything else. The weather here is starting to cool down as well. I guess I'll have to dig out my fall coat!

Dave - Awesome time for racewalking! There are some days that I get out there and can't even run that fast  You're going to need an escort in a race so that you can bypass the other racers on course. Hope you're cold is better pixiedust:

Kim - How's your training coming along? Are you ready for the Island Girl Half? I can't believe how quickly September gone by - it's the middle of the month already!!

Tandy - You'll get back your endurance and range of motion in no time at all. The important thing right now is to focus on rest so your body can heal... well that and your classes :) Sorry to hear about the test ... I know how hard you've been studying so I'm sure things will work out. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Gerry - Yikes! That's scary but good to know that help wasn't too far away. How was the cruise otherwise?

Emily - Great RR and congrats on an excellent race! I heard about the hot weather - that must have made it extra tough. Do you think you'll do this race again next year?

Saylan - Hope things have gotten better and the other person is staying away.

Mike - Welcome back! Can't wait to read your RR!

Sue - :wave2: Will catch up with you tomorrow!

AFM - Just busy, busy, busy at work! I think everyone's back from summer holidays so there's a lot more work that needs to be done so unfortunately, there's not much time for DIS.

The exercising has been good - I've been doing the boot camp twice a week in addition to the running and training session. I feel like I've been getting better at some of the exercises like the TRX rows and quick steps. The knee feels okay and I've been icing it after running. I think it may have been a case of switching to new shoes and getting my legs stretched out. At least I hope it's that simple *knock on wood*

Last week, at boot camp we had a mini competition for a free training session. Of course my trainer tells his clients that we're not eligible for the prize, but whatever - I'm doing it anyway. The challenge was a wall sit which strangely enough I had never done. There were about 15 of us competing and I almost made it to the end. The last three people were two 16-year-old guys and myself. I don't know how long we were sitting there for but my lower back was fatiguing and so I had to drop out. I told my trainer that it wasn't a fair competition if there were 16-year-olds involved but since I couldn't win anyway I guess it didn't matter. LOL I still am happy that I was able to outlast most of the other people in the class.

I also saw "Contagion" last weekend... I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. I thought there wasn't much of a plot and not much character development so I never empathized with anyone in the movie. It's a shame because they had a really strong cast. I also thought they threw in a few things in the movie to make some not so subtle points - like don't destroy the environment etc.

Oh I forgot to add - if anyone wants to do the Biggest Loser Challenge again. I'll start it up tomorrow. So don't forget to give me your starting weights and I'll repost the rules on the first page tonight :)
