I had to laugh tonight (maybe it was just to keep from bopping this man on the head).

After I get off work at my full time job, I change clothes into my ugly uniform and go to work at the local outlet mall a few nights a week. I like my part-time retail job where the high stress is whether or not the person likes the purple or blue t-shirt better and real important stuff like that. My retail job feeds my "Disney Pig" as we call it and the money goes via direct deposit to the bank and I only touch the account for Disney trips.

So tonight I am working and this man and his wife come in the store. Somehow, Disney Vacation Club comes up and he is kind of "teaching me" about it (or trying to impress me or something) and then he proceeds to tell me how he owns at Disney's Vero Beach and how he had to call after the last hurricane (BEFORE Jeanne) to check on the place because he owns the property and he had to check on his asset..............OKAY, I almost lost it at that point...........it was all I could do not to say, "I am sure they really needed 20,000+ Vacation Club owners calling down there when they were in survival crisis mode." BUT I kept my mouth shut and just smiled. He was anxious to get back to his hometown tonight so he could call down to Vero Beach AGAIN first thing tomorrow to check on the property this time. What planet is this guy from?? We are ALL concerned about our "homes" but PLEASE don't add to the problems by jamming the lines with idiot questions about "your asset." Sorry, I digress.....

This is the point where I was biting my tongue to not laugh.....he is saying, I don't know if you know how points work, blah, blah, blah, and I said, "Yes, Sir, I own at Beach Club Villas and I am pretty sure they work the same way there." THE LOOK ON HIS FACE WAS PRICELESS.........He could not believe the $7.30 per hour store clerk girl could possibly belong to HIS club. I just kept thinking, Thank God he owns at a different property so he can't run up my maintenance costs with his high maintenance needs.

I guess I am the DVC white trash girl who works two jobs to make trips more magical. People are amazing.

I am sorry he rubbed you the wrong way, and came across as arrogant.
However, I am also trying to get some info on VB. I also called today to get the scoop, and the recording suggested that I call tomorrow. I will indeed call tomorrow.

Not to worry, I have not been in a retail store lately braging about DVC ;) .

I know you are a DVC member, but I would like to respectfully suggest that Vero Beach point owners have a more vested interest in the outcome from Frances and Jeanne.

Thanx for sharing...

I totally understand that VB owners have more to be concerned about...and, I truly hope that everything is okay.

But, I think this guy had more of an agenda!! This is the kind of thing that spurs people on other boards to believe that we are "snobby"...I HATE that!!!

Maybe that man learned a very valuable lesson tonight...I hope so!!

GritsGirl, Unlike that gentleman in your story I only own 0.007% of building ### at the BCV's. ( saw this number someplace and had to use it)
I have thought about calling every day to see about my investment also but my DW said she would break my arm if I made the call. If you or anyone has any information please pass-it on. I am hoping my 2 bricks are still in place so my November trip will not be spoiled.

Rick

Maybe he is just as excited about DVC as many of us are and couldn't help himself. I don't think calling the resort number every few days is necessarily a problem.

Your story reminds me of my "Aunt Dot".

I last saw her when I was about 5 years old. Fast forward 30 years. I met her in FL at her friends house. We made plans to meet that Sunday at my house. As I drove off in my 7 year old car she commented that it was a nice car, and had I borrowed it. Double slam.

Well, that Sunday she came to my house. It was a pretty large, nice house (well, according to my standards ;) ). The look on Aunt Dot's face as her jaw hit the floor was truely priceless.

I won't get into the phone call discussion. But blathering to a sales clerk about "my asset" is simply an attempt to brag and dominate. It sounds like you dusted this guy off very nicely.

ITA rocketriter! Thanks for sharing Grits! Sounds like the guy was really trying to impress the heck out of you. You handled it well!

Totally. I worked at a large department store when I was in college and the jerks were endless...............

I'm not sure which is worse, the bragger or those being excessively judgemental of others......

As to who has the bigger chip on thier shoulder... I'd just share that my approach when people bring up DVC is to let them know early on in the conversation I'm a fellow owner. The point is to enjoy nice vacations, and perhaps a little partnership and common ground with others. Life's too short.

I'm with ya grits! That guy sounds like a real jerk, one of those types that have no idea what it's like to be in the "working class". I'm just happy that i scraped together enough for the 150 points I have to feed my Disney addiction! Good to know there are others out there at my end of the spectrum!

...snip

So, in this case are you just being judgemental, as opposed to "excessively" judgmental?

While I don't have the initial posters opinion as absolute, the 'my asset' line from a person out of the blue like that would really have me thinking about his head may resemble another part of anatomy...

I too own at VB. If I didn't have here to look, I would have used the Disney websites, along with continuing to monitor the local media websites as I have been doing. I have not picked up the phone once thru all the hurricanes, and won't be doing so. Do I worry about the place? Certainly, but as someone above said, no need for me to call the resort about it. I'm sure when they have something to say, or some local media outlet covers it, the info will be out there. But this is just my opinion, do as you will.

way. Otherwise he would have been happy to meet a fellow DVCer.
Just glad it was you he picked on instead of someone scraping by deciding whether to pay the heat or buy food this week.

Worked in retail twice. Most customer were nice, some were not.

Or maybe he was trying to impress her attempting to get a date. He might just have a thing for our girl Grits :Pinkbounc

Since when is a timeshare an asset?

I'll never forget the guy who gave me a quarter at the cash register and told me to call the community college so I could get a degree--um, ok, but you don't know me--I'm going to grad school full time, have a teaching job full time and work this retail to get extra spending money for my vacation "habit". Now I don't do all of these jobs anymore. I just laughed and took the quarter--feed the change jar, one omore quarter for me!;)

I had to add to this. My wonderful mother has always done everything for her family...everyone but herself. The same goes for my dad, very content, don't live large, etc. My mom worked for Marriott for 25 years in food service at a local prestigous college. She made the salads. To look at my mom and dad would lead you to believe they are struggling. Mom wears the same clothes for years, same with dad. Dad is a finish carpenter (a fabulous one, at that). Long story short, mom is at work and the students/staff ask where do you live? She replies X (pricey area in greater Boston) well jaws drop. They just bought their first new car since 1966 (all cars up to this point have been second hand - meticuously cared for by other family members). Well dad's van gets wrecked and has to take mom's car to work at the construction site...a mercedes...needless to say the reaction was priceless...Point of story...you just never know!
