Hey everyone, we just had to cancel our Disney vacation. My father-in-law fell off a ladder and broke his neck (C1, C2, C7 vertebrae) and is in a coma. We all could use your prayers in this time of need. Everyone on this board is so thoughtful and I know that this would be a great set of people to ask for prayer. Thank you.

My heart goes out to you and yours ~

Just wanted to check-up and see how your FIL is doing...hope all is well (or at least getting better) :flower: :sunny: :flower:

I just came upon this thread tonight and wanted to add my prayers for Jerry and your entire family. He sounds like one heck of a fighter and obviously a great man. Please know that you all will remain in my thoughts as he works on his recovery. (((HUGS)))

He is improving great little by little. Over the past few days they have been able to begin weaning him off the ventilator. As of now they only use it for help with pressure. He goes through therapy every so often where they take him totally off it for about an hour. Its great news. They let him use a voice box yesterday for the first time. He was able to talk, which relieved him of a lot of frustration, but a few things he said got jumbled up and didn't make sense, but thats understandable through all he has been through. He keeps saying he wants to go home and he always tells us he loves us and blows us kisses. I'm just glad he is alright in his mind. He has feeling throught his left side which he has received physical therapy for, but we are still working on his right. He has improved so much lately for this type of injury. Everyone keep praying, it is working.

Nik's mom: Thanks for posting that bible verse! "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." (Phil 4:13). That has really helped us. My niece wrote that on a big poster board and attached it to the ceiling in his room so he could read it. Then my Pastor brought it to our church for the whole congregation to sign. Thanks again.

Thanks everyone for your continued concern. My family and I just think you all are so thoughtful and great. You all are my extended family :grouphug: . Thank you for all your prayers, they are definitely working. God bless everyone. :goodvibes

It is wonderful news that he is getting better little-by-little. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. :grouphug:

Saying prayers for your FIL and family, that he continues a quick and complete recovery and that God provides strength and grace for you and your family. :grouphug:

You are so positive! That will help him so much! I am also praying for a full recovery and for peacefulness and patients for your FIL until the recovery comes. May God bless your family during this difficult time. Lean on Him and look hopefully to the future.

I'm sorry. Prayers on the way for your family.

You and your entire family are in our prayers! I hope you can schedule a HUGE Magical Gatherings event to celebrate his FULL RECOVERY!

God bless!

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

In December of 03, my mother was in a car accident. She broke her neck (c1 & c2), back, and pelvis. Her stomach and kidneys stopped working. She suffered a code blue in the hospital while I was in the room with her. It was over a month before she was concious again. During that month we didn't know if she would wake up and if she did if she would be paralyzed or not. At one point, the dr. told me she was brain dead. A year and a half later she is up and walking around. She even returned to teaching last fall. She does have some weakness in her left side and limited mobility in her neck. She also gets tired very easily nowdays.

I just wanted to let you know people do live through this. I always thought people died if they broke their neck, but that is not always the case. Since the accident we have met several people who tell us their stories of survival.

On a side note, during my mothers recovery, she came to live with us for several months. This allowed her and her granddaughter to bond. We used to live so far away from each other that they hardly got to see each other. They actually had a contest to see who could learn to walk first.

If you need to talk, please let me know. I am praying for you and your family during this difficult time.

That is wonderful news to hear that your mom recovered from her accident. It really helps to hear stories of survival from similar incidents to help remain positive and keep moving on. Thank you for sharing. I will copy this post and email it to my family for words of encouragement. God bless you and thankyou for your prayer. :goodvibes

Please keep us posted on your dad's recovery. Have they been able to remove the vent entirely yet? Is he still in traction or have the placed the halo on? My mom was in traction for over a month before they finally put the halo on. They tried to do surgery three times before they gave up and went to the halo. Once he is out of the ICU he will probably start some intense rehab. This was so difficult for my mom. She had to relearn how to do everything, while at the same time she was so sick. We chose to move her to a rehab hospital in MN. I really think that made a huge difference in her recovery. We also looked at Craig in Colarado. We are from the midwest though, I'm not sure what options are available down your way.

On a side note - if this happened while your dad was at work, worker's comp should cover the medical bills. My mom's was a work related accident - driving between classes. Workers comp covered every penny of her medical bills. It was truly a blessing not to have to worry about that.

The stories really helped my mom get through it. Here are some more I remember from the last year and a half.

I remember one day while my mom was recovering we went to the mall for the afternoon. This was a big outing for her and the first time she really went out in public with her halo on. She was getting tired and collapsed on a bench. This really sweet old lady came up to her and started telling her about her broken neck 20 years ago. It was so sweet. We still talk about that nice lady. It really made my mom's day.

A few weeks later we were in the furniture store doing some shopping. The salesmen was telling us about his broken neck and halo from a motorcycle accident several years ago.

Then just this weekend we were at a dance recital. The lady sitting next to us had a broken neck many years ago. They were laughing at how hard it was to talk since neither of them could turn their neck to look at the other person.

I will be continuing to think of you and your family during this difficult time.

HI again, was just thinking of your FIL and wanted to see if there was any update....hope all is well, or at leaast getting better!!! :grouphug:

I just came across your thread today. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your father-in-law :grouphug: We can't wait to read about further improvements!

Thank you for your continued support. I'm sorry I haven't posted in awhile, things have been hectic. Well, he was moved from Trauma ICU to a rehab center at a Healthsouth in Dallas on May 11. The place was dirty, falling apart and was very disappointing, but they had a good rehab team and it was covered on his insurance so we had to make do. Well God was looking down on us because my mother in law thought his halo had come loose (from possible weight loss) and they could only inspect it in Fort Worth, so he got moved to the Healthsouth Rehab in Fort Worth (the old Cooks Childrens hospital) which is a wonderful place (great staff, very clean, and great rehab team). We were so happy and less stressed. He is now totally off the vent! He still has the feeding tube, but that is for a short while until he passes more swallow tests. They sat him up the other day and he finally got to get in a wheelchair and was able to go outside for the first time since the accident on 4/20/05. He is recovering so well thanks to all your prayers. His mind is still a little jumbled up, he keeps talking about things that doesn't make sense. For instance, one day he thinks he is in an airplane and works for the government, on another he needs donkeys to pull all his equipment out of the room. But at least he recognizes everyone. The doctors say its normal and that his brain is healing, to keep reminding him he is in a hospital from a bad fall. We are just taking it one day at a time. I think I'm going to get my camcorder and go videotape his house and say "this is your house, your kitchen" etc, to help him remember.

Thank you so much. You guys are wonderful. We couldn't do this without your support and prayers :grouphug: . God bless everyone. :goodvibes

Just saw this thread...continued prayers for your family...glad to hear the recovery is progressing...
