Grilled Cheese--Do They Use Real Bread??

The last time we were at Disney was six years ago. At that point grilled cheese was hard to come by, and some places made it on hamburger rolls. This did not go over well with my three year old and I didn't blame her! When grilled cheese is listed on a menu, can I expect it to be made on actual sandwich bread now?

Our kids had grilled cheese several times. It was always made on regular ole bread. I'm trying to think of exactly where they had it, but I'm drawing a blank on all but Kona (It was made with 3 pieces of bread there!) and Whispering Canyon. I know they had grilled cheese sandwiches at other places; but, for the life of me, I can't think where!!

Beaches and Cream has true grilled cheese as well. The one at Kona sounds good!

Were those grilled cheese on buns actually on the menu or did they just try to accomodate you? I remeber asking a McDonalds years ago if they had grilled cheese. They said sure...but it ended up being what you described. :sad2: But at least they tried!

Everywhere we've been it is on real bread. DS really like the grilled cheese at Roaring Forks at WL. He ate it every day...

When you ordered grilled cheese 6 years ago, was it actually on the menu? Or were they just trying to pull something together for you? It is possible the location didn't even have loaves of bread available to them...

When I used to work at Gasparilla's Grill and Games, people would come in and order things like pasta, steak & baked potato, gallon jugs of milk, etc. We did our best to go over to the adjacent kitchens for the GF Cafe/1900 Park Fare and get what we could. I never understood why people did that - do you go to McDonald's and order mac & cheese?

I honestly don't remember since it was six years ago, how it all went....I THINK grilled cheese was NOT on the menu (which surprised us all and caused anguish for my DD) but when we inquired as to whether or not they had it, despite not seeing it on the big counter menu screens, they all simply said they had it and would make it. Then it would arrive on hamburger buns. So you're probably right. They probably just accomodated us, but I don't recall them explaining that it's not a regular item and that they would have to improvise.

Anyway, I'm so pleased this time around to find that grilled cheese is a regular offering at many places and they apparently use bread. I'm also pleased that our newest member (4 year old DD) likes hot dogs and chicken so mealtimes should go smoothly. :o)

At Typhoon Lagoon they have a grilled cheese pretzel. A very bread-y pretzel is grilled with cheese in between the slices. My son liked it very much on this trip.

Just want to warn you that the situation may still be the same at counter service restaurants. All the places named have been full service spots except for Gasparilla's. They do have a very nice basic grilled cheese there.

I do love grilled cheese. :sunny:

At the concourse steakhouse at CR the grilled cheese is on rainbow bread. It's a little odd looking but my DD ate hers.

It depends on where you get it from. I have two kids who don't eat fried foods (no chicken nuggets) or hamburgers, will only occasionally eat a hotdog (the one old enough), but ALWAYS eat a grilled cheese sandwich. Places that don't have it on the menu generally give it to you on a hamburger bun unless they serve something else on normal bread. If it is on the menu, it always comes on regular bread.

Basically, most counter service restruants do not have it on the menu. Many sit-down restruants do. I wish everyone offered it, as babies are not supposed to be eating chicken nuggets, hamburgers, & hotdogs but can eat grilled cheese sandwiches once on table foods. We found that items off the adult menu worked better when a normal grilled cheese wasn't available. My kids LOVE grilled chicken.
