GorillaPod

I am diggin' my gorillapod. 1.6 Sec Exposure.

I am so in awe of this. I love it!

I have a Giottos mini ball head that I use on my Clamperpod (same situation where a big ball head would defeat the purpose)...

Theoretically it holds 5lb. It's not super stable but it should be enough to hold your camera more or less in position while still being tiny and light. You will want to use a remote shutter release or at least the timer, otherwise you will shake it when you hit the shutter.

It is tricky getting it super snug to the camera itself, which means if you tilt it on its side in one direction, the weight of the lens will make it unscrew itself slightly - the solution is simple, flip it 180' then the weight of the lens will make it tighter!

It's also dirt cheap - $10 at Adorama, I paid $15 at the local college bookstore. It's probably better than some of the no-name supercheap ball heads out there, certainly it's much better than the ones on the $10-15 mini tripods.

Hmmmmmmm...thanks for the head's up (hehe...had to pun it). I will be on the lookout for that. I haven't seen that in any of the local stores. For $10, I'd be willing to try it out. The smallest ball joint I've seen locally is $29.99 (Manfrotto). I couldn't see myself paying that much only to see my camera tip over. LOL

I'm heading to NYC in February, I'm hoping to drop in on B&H Photo...maybe they have one.

I got mine today, the SLR-Zoom model since my 30D and 24-105 are already at the 3 lb limit of the SLR model. It sure looks like it will work, and some of the great photos I see in this post (G-dad and others) show how versatile this thing is.

I ordered a Velbon QHD-51Q ballhead for the Gorilla since I already have a Velbon tripod with the same quick release. I may also find or make a low profile non-adjustable QR for it, to reduce the overall height.

Anyway, at slightly under a lb it doesn't weigh much (except compared to my monopod) and what's another lb or so when carried around WDW all day? ;)

Gorillapod... http://www.joby.com/index.html

Anyone ave first hand knowledge of one? They look good.:goodvibes

I am looking at the one for Zoom SLR's...I just wanted yeah or neah opinions if anyone has used one.:confused3

Thanks :surfweb:

I just got the SLR one, Sam. Have not used it as of yet but it sure looks like it will work well.

You and Richard doing well?? Happy New Year (still not Feb yet, LOL).

Thanks Dan, Happy New Year to you too...

We are doing ok. How are things with you?

Got the SLR version and love it !! Very steady, and very flexible ! I highly reccommend them for situations when a traditional tripod may not be useable.

Hi,
Going to Disney in July and was thinking of a tripod but then saw the Gorillapod and was wondering if it is worth it and is it as good or better than a regular tripod?

Thanks in advance.

I LOVE mine! It's super lightweight- didn't even notice I was carrying it, and being able to hook it around poles and such is so handy!

This isn't a very good pic, but I used it to set up my video camera on my balcony at BCV so I could video tape Illuminations, and take photos at the same time:

I've used it, and like the ability to mount a camera in random places, but be wary of the surface. Stay close by in case it starts to slide or lose it's grip.

Thanks I think I will get one.

Thanks. I will definitely beware of that. it just looks so handy I think I need one.
LOL

Has anyone every used a gorillapod (or similar)? How did you like it?

Thanks

I have the smallest model and use it with my Fuji F30. I like it so much that I'm very tempted to get the SLR version now that I have a DSLR also!

I purchased one some months back. I have a Canon P&S, S2, and have the middle sized pod. The smaller one would be too small. I like it, a lot.

A 15% discount code link also.......

Dan,
I have an S2IS as well and was curious as to how well it supported the camera. Did you use it at DW? And if so did you wrap it around all sorts of things or did you use it primarily as a standard tri-pod? Sorry for the strange questions, but I've looked at a couple that didn't seem sturdy enough to hold the camera up! TIA! Also, how quick is their shipping? We leave mid Sept!

I bought myself, my DS, and DNiece the smaller one (holds 12 oz.) for Christmas last year. I weighed my camera and it was just over the limit so I decided to risk it. I have a Kodak, DX7590, and it holds it just fine. I ordered ours from Kodak, and got them in about a week.

Funny story is on my second trip to DL using it, it apparently fell out of my bag. I didn't notice for awhile, and as soon as I did, I went to lost and found. When I described it to them, I know they had no idea what I was talking about. :confused3 I told them it most likely would be taken by someone as being a child's toy and possibly thrown out. They said they don't throw away anything. I called the next day, and the next, and it was never turned in. I was there a few days later and I brought in a picture of it to show L&F. The CM I spoke to said he remembered my calls, and he was grateful for the pix, but nothing like that was turned in. I was totally bummed as I really liked it. I bought a similar one (Sunpak Flexpod) at a local camera store and even though it is the same size as my gorillapod was, it won't support my camera. The bendy things are a little looser, and it just doesn't work.

I picked up a Gorillapod at Best Buy (about $21) about a month ago so I will have it this Sept. Once again, it is the smaller one, and for my Kodak dig cam, it works great. I'm really looking forward to being able to get some fireworks shots without them being all crazy from me hand holding it.

The few times I did use it at DLR it worked great. I got some great pictures of SW all decorated for Christmas by wrapping the "pod" around a railing. Held it great. Another good thing to wrap it around is a stroller handle.

ADDED-according to Joby website the smaller pod is good for up to 9.7 oz. However, according to Kodak website it will handle 12.5 oz. My camera weighs 14 oz. and it works for me, but if you are in doubt, buy the SLR version.

i own two. the smaller version and the dslr version. i love the smaller version, it's so convenient with my point and shoot i can position it in odd places, which is fantastic! especially in disney! i got a lot of awesome photos using it and it's very helpful when you don't want to ask people to take your picture.

the dslr version i could have done without. it's a little too bulky for me it doesn't hold my camera all that well and it's much harder to position. i should have bought a real tripod.
