GorillaPod

I ordered the SLR Zoom version. It's supposed to be coming any day now...it's on a Fed Ex Truck heading across the prairies...probably now stuck in the snow!!

Was goign to just buy the SLR version but the lens on the camera makes it really heavy! The Zoom version should be sturdy enough...but no little shoe ... it goes directly on the Gorillapod. I have a head I put on my monopod...maybe I can put it on the Gorillapod. Or I'll break down and buy another one. hmmm

This is just too cool. I love this board! :goodvibes

I bought the "regular" Gorillapod and took it to WDW in Dec. Now I see that I probably would have been better off with the SLR version for my Sony H5. Here's a pic I took with the gorillapod on top of a trashcan of MGM from the walkway to Boardwalk. It was much better than handheld but could have been better.

What is wrapped on? I got my gorillapod the other day but haven't used it in a real world situation yet. I'm curious as to what real people are using it on...

I have yet to wrap it. I have been using it as a portable, tiny tripod. Works great, although it can take some setup time to get it just right.

As I recall the little fence on the left side turns ane wraps around- I set it on that and the legs were long enough to hook it around the bottom.

OH wow!

I read a fantastic little blip in Newsweek (or Time) last week on the Gorillapod and it had nothing but all thumbs up for it. Of course I had already read about it here on the DIS LOL.

this is a picture with my little camera (a samsung i6) using a gorillapod wrapped around the railing in front of the castle. the second picture is on top of a trash can on the bridge to the castle.

ok gorilla pod users...do you think the largest one would be good if i got the 70-200 f4lens ( about 2.5 lbs , my rebel is about a lb i think) and used it with a teleconverter which i wouldn't think would weigh very much so about 4 lbs total plus the head would be maybe another 8 oz or so? is that cutting it to close?,

gdad your photos are convincing me ( if bobq would just stop posting those nice 70-200 f4 shots the 70-300 IS would have a fighting chance :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: )

I got the slr- not the slr zoom- mainly because I wanted something small and I can't help but think if I have to put a tripod head on it then it kind of defeats the purpose- I may as well carry my little Manfrotto Modo-Maxi. As-is it literally fits in my back pocket. I usually use an 18-200 f3.5-5.6 as a walk-around lens- with my D70 it's under 3lb.

Don't get me wrong- it is a little wobbly a lot of times. Not like you are using a big heavy tripod. But I don't want to lug one all over the place either. With a little fiddling I have been able to get this to work out alright for me.

Yes. I have the largest one. It'll hold.

i was thinking of getting a ball head for it because my tripod only has a panning head and is not replaceable so with the ball head on the g.pod i could use it connect to my tripod for macro etc( wouldn't that look snazzy;) ) don't know if i would need to use the head at all times but would naturally not want the hold sha-bang falling in a lake or something due to weight if i did:sad2:

I have considered buying a ball joint for my gorillapod but am also worried about the weight. The smallest ball joint doesn't look strong enough for my camera (rebel + 17-40 L lens). The darn lens makes it really heavy. A bigger ball joint or the monopod head that I have would make the gorillapod heavy and yes, defeat the purpose as Gdad mentioned.

I've been playing with the gorillapod...not actually taking photos with it yet but bending it around. I think with practice, you should be able to bend it around to get the right angle and framing. It's not unlike a regular mini tripod that takes a lot of adjustment.

Whatever the situation, the camera strap will remain firmly around my neck to prevent disaster. If I have to bend in some ungodly pretzel formation to keep the camera around my neck, I will do so. :lmao:

is the screw on the top of the gorillapod a normal tripod size or different...i know i would need an adapter to put the ball head it was looking at on a monopod i was looking at and i wondered if that would be the same...the monopod/ball head set up would be same cost wise but i thought the gorilllapod would be more all purpose ie in the car, etc where a monopod wouldn't work. i haven't seen these actually in stock anywhere in my area which i wish i could play around with it to see if it would be what i want

Great shots as per usual Jeff!

I've had my camera hanging upside down from the range fan over the stove! This little guy can go anywhere!

It comes with an adapter for heads. It's a sscrew that screws onto the gpod screw. Very simple and works. BTW: Look for it with the box. I almost threw mine away before I read on their site that it was included. Whew!

Okay, Okay, it looks cool!!!

and now for the photography for extreme idiots question: do you need to use a remote with it?

I use a Rebel XT, usually and 18-125 lens, sometimes a 70-300 lens. Is a remote something I already ought to be using?:confused3

I have a Giottos mini ball head that I use on my Clamperpod (same situation where a big ball head would defeat the purpose)...

Theoretically it holds 5lb. It's not super stable but it should be enough to hold your camera more or less in position while still being tiny and light. You will want to use a remote shutter release or at least the timer, otherwise you will shake it when you hit the shutter.

It is tricky getting it super snug to the camera itself, which means if you tilt it on its side in one direction, the weight of the lens will make it unscrew itself slightly - the solution is simple, flip it 180' then the weight of the lens will make it tighter!

It's also dirt cheap - $10 at Adorama, I paid $15 at the local college bookstore. It's probably better than some of the no-name supercheap ball heads out there, certainly it's much better than the ones on the $10-15 mini tripods.
