Goofy Support Group (AKA Goofy Challenge 2010)

Hi Everyone,

Glad to see most everyone is in training mode for Goofy. I'm still concentrating on my Fall Marathon and will start b2b runs early November. A few of my runs lately have been cut short or slowed down due to the heat or life getting too hectic. I still have 8 weeks left so I'm not going to panic yet. Plenty of time.

Happy training everyone.
Cindy

Officially I'm training for the Toronto International marathon in October but of course will just continue on from that for Goofy. Question though, my last two long runs (30km-which i couldn't finish, and 21km) i've had a very sore achilles tendon at around the 19km mark. So sore on the 30km that I knew I couldn't finish the run. Any advice on this? It's not an injury YET-I just don't want it to turn into one.
Thanks!

Hey Bec, I am dealing with the same issue right now. I have found that icing on and off and getting some stretching in has been helping. Just be VERY careful. If it is real pain and not just a tightness or tenderness stop what you are doing. My father tore his achilles before and it was over a year before he could return to running.

Hi all you Goofys!
W1D1 was a zero day for me. Need to make scheduling adjustments already.

Bec, I'd say lots of stretching. Do you run with any type of orthotic in the shoe? My Orthopoedic doc recommended to add a thin heel pad under my Superfeet orthotic to give a bit of extra lift and lessen the pull on the tendon. Slow the pace some if you can. He told me to just go to the store and get the cheap shoe inserts cut them for heel or 1/4 in carpet padding and cut it to fit. Change it about every week or so. I've been good to go with that advice. Stretch, stretch, stretch. Slow up a bit.

Ha! I don't start for 2 more weeks. Actually took today off, no exercising. But, this is the first night off in while. I pretty much either run, weights, or bike everyday so I am ready for the training! Yea, right.

Hang in there folks we have a long way to go.

enjoy,
Duane

W1D2 - 40 minutes on the bike at the gym. Tomorrow night - 60 min aqua-fit class.

WTG everyone on training!!!!!

Walk and weights done last night...wahoooooo
Day 2 of eatting clean done.....

Feeling great!!!!

Alright Everyone I've got us updated to here with 51 I think..... How awesome is that? :woohoo:

My training has been going good. I've been doing at least one back to back a week of 4 miles for the last few weeks and this past weekend I did a 10 and 5 so I guess I'm going after it. I'm ahead of my back to backs from last year though and my mileage is slightly up so I'm ready to roll.

Something I don't do is Cross Train and I know I should, but I'm already doing 5 days a week one week and 4 days the next so.... :rolleyes1

Congrats to our new Goofy's too!!!!

Chris: Good job on the b2b's. I don't normally cross train either, but since I did a Tri this summer I've stuck with the swimming. I like it because the more I exercise the more I can eat.

Kim: Great job with the clean eating. I really need to try to get back to that. Great for fueling your workouts.

Pat: Day 2 of training and you're still on schedule. Good for you!!

Duane: Enjoy the next 2 weeks. It's so much more fun running because you want to and not because you "have" to.

Lily: Sorry about day 1. Still time to make up for it though.

Rebecca and Kate: Good luck with your achilles.

Got my tempo run in this morning since the forecast for lunchtime was 90 degrees. We haven't had much hot weather here this summer, so I'm really not accustomed to running in heat.

Happy Training Everyone.

This week has been an interesting one for me. At a recent local event, I met someone who is part of a group that runs together at least once a week. This past Sunday, I got to join them. I'm the youngest of the group (by at least ten years), and apparently also one of the slowest (though not by so much).

As my friend was telling me about the others in the group, he mentioned a 62 year old woman. Admittedly, my first thought was the older composition of the group would put them more at my speed. Until he continued by saying that back in '84 she competed at the Olympic trials.

Long story made short, we did a just over 10 mile run, and my average pace ended up just below the 10:00 mark... far and away the fastest I've ever done over that distance. So, that was awesome. As we were chatting afterwards, come to find out my friend is actually the father of one of my coworkers... I felt silly for not having put two and two together before that.

Monday I took the day off work both to spend a little extra time with the kids before school, and also to get in another long run. I ended up completing 15 miles in about 2:40 (10:40 pace approx), finishing with a strong 8:00 mile (and feeling like I could alternately have gone several more miles if time allowed). Long story short, I came off this back-to-back feeling very very good about an upcoming half this Saturday. (No, I didn't taper at all...)

Took yesterday off, and am doing the same today (may do some basic strength tonight, though), will do a long cross-training tomorrow, and a short (1-2 mile) run on Friday just to keep things moving.

Achilles is feeling really good today. Took it for a ride in spin class and still no problems. Will ice it down real well in the morning then take it for a run. :cool1:

Thanks for all the advice! Stretching and icing seem to be my best bet. Katie, glad you had a good bike today. I'm running tonight so will see how it goes, although the last two times it's bothered me have been in my long runs.
Happy Training!

Reporting in: W1D3 of Goofy training

60 min aqua-fit class - done.

Stay healthy everyone! Happy training!

I can't decide if I'm envious of those of you just starting Goofy training, or relieved that I'm not just starting out! Since I'm doing Richmond on 11/14, our Galloway group schedule has us doing 18 this weekend. I've been really bad the past couple of weeks and done nothing at all midweek, but have successfully managed TWO runs so far this week - both of them 4+ miles. I'm feeling very good about training right now, but don't want to overdo it either. Am sticking very carefully to the Richmond plan until then.

Good luck to everyone!

Jackie

Hello, I am new to the boards, but not to Disney. I was a FL resident during college and now live in IL. I've run the FULL in 2007 and the HALF in 2008 and will be running my first GOOFY in 2010, my sixth marathon. Good luck to all!

Projected times:

HALF: 1+45
FULL: 3+50

Welcome Quack_ many of us are doing our first Goofy's this year. Very exciting year in the land of WISH!!!!

Great training everyone!!!!

Welcome Quack!

Ankle held up pretty good for my run this morning. So good I had to struggle to get myself to stop right around 6 miles. Stretched it when I was done and am now icing it before hopping in the shower.

Ahh! I'm supposed to be running 32km this weekend! I ran about 6km last night and it wasn't pain but my achilles tendon was very tight. I iced, massaged and stretched last night and now today it's sooo tight I can feel it even when I walk (which I couldn't before). I'm taking tonight off but am sooo nervous for the 32. When I was supposed to run 30 I had to stop at 21 because of my tendon....not sure where to go from here as I'm not sure if it's just tight or is heading towards an injury.
Sorry guys, I needed to rant...
Have I mentioned how great this board is? lol .

I am working out...but have not yet put together a plan to long mileage.

I am working with a personal trainer 2x/wk for 30 mins. Tough strength workout. I follow that with 45-60 mins of cardio on the elliptical.

I have a TM at home and use that 3-4 days/wk, usually to the machines limit of 100 minutes. I am more of a walker then a runner, so I only do a little over 6 miles during that time. I run (5mph) the first 2 minutes of each mile then cut back to 4mph for the rest of the mile. I do that for 80 minutes with a 10 minute warm up and cool down.

This weekend I will get back outside for my walks in the cemetery. I have a 3day 60 mile walk in October. I am hopeful that this will be adequate for my b2b long mileage, though I may do another one or 2 later in the fall.

There are some terms that I don't understand and I am hoping someone here will enlighten me.

Tempo workout, speed workout, hill workout. I can quess, but would rather have the accurate information. Also, if I do 6 miles on the TM on Monday, and another 6 miles on Tuesday, does this qualify as b2b? If not, what exactly does qualify as b2b?

Thanks! :goodvibes
