Goofy is Now 95% Full! Last Call!

My favorite running buddy signed up for Goofy. She has spent every run this week trying to talk me into doing it with her.

Yes, the woman who ran almost 500 training miles with me (when she wasn't even training) and listened to me panic for almost a year (and calmed me down every time) is asking me for a favor....

I finally talked DH into talking about it and couldn't decide if I wanted it to be full or not when I checked. I promised to sleep on it tonight so unless it fills up over night, I think I am in again.

I can't believe I am tempting fate like this! I had such a great experience this year that there is no way next year could match it.

Alright I signed up today and I'm attempting the Goofy!!!!!

I didn't get a confirmation or anything, but I at least did my part in signing up and paying for this bad boy. Here's hoping! :drinking1

Congratulations Chris! I'm sure you'll do fine.

:cool1: WTG Cecilia...and next year you'll do great I'm sure! Congrats on signing up for the madness again. :)

Chris: Congrats. You'll be JUST FINE! No fear...just train smart and stay healthy. I think Cecilia and I can both attest to the fact that solid training and showing up healthy is your best bet. I had a BLAST in both races. It truly was so much fun that within a few days I was ready to do it again. Enjoy the ride!

With the extra 1000 Goofy participants, the half marathon is filling quickly too. It shows 55% full.

Dan.

Hi all,
I at least lasted until it was 75% full. Some of you weaker folks couldn't make it past 65% :rotfl:

Only 1 marathon under my belt, but doing just another marathon didn't seem so exciting. So, it was the Goofy or the half. I wasn't going to do the marathon by itself. Ugh, what did I do?

enjoy,
Duane

Ugh, what did I do?

You did exactly what I did last year. I can't tell you how many times all year I panicked about the fact that I only had one marathon under my belt. (and a pretty ugly one at that)

Here is the cut and dry though. As you train for a marathon, you run lots and lots of 13+ mile runs. Pretty soon, a half is an easy training run for you. The big challenge is that you start the full with legs that are not as fresh as you would like them to be, but even that equals out at about mile 5.

Many people think my training plan is too aggressive but I finished Goofy feeling absolutely fantastic. Train hard and you will be just fine. Heck, even if you don't train all that hard you will finish, it might hurt a little more & it might not be as fun.

Thanks for the encouragement. Any chance of sharing that training plan? I was going to use the Higdon Intermediate plan as they have a long run on 2 consecutive days. The first is about 1/2 of the second day but it gets to 10 and 20 I think.

Any chance of sharing that training plan?

I don't mind sharing. Basically mine is just an adjusted Higdon plan I think. I will have to look at his plans again and compare.

What I did was run Tuesday, Wednesday(twice),Thursday and Saturday.
So my week looked something like this:
cross train-rest- 6 - 10/5 - 6 -rest-long run

I was going to do back to back runs but then at one of my husbands triathlons, I had a long conversation with a bunch on ironman contenders. They, to a man, agreed that I did not have enough running experience to be doing back to back runs. They believed that I would more prone to injury if I did this.
So over a few beers (ok, more than a few) we came up with doing a split run on Wednesdays. I would run either 8 or 10 in the morning and then 3 to 5 that night. The idea is that I would get to know the feeling of having tired legs at the beginning of a run but I wouldn't really be pushing too long on those tired legs.

It worked. My legs on marathon morning felt just like they did during my Wednesday night and Thursday morning runs. If I hadn't known that the tired feeling would go away, I probably would have been very concerned.

The other bit of advice they gave me was to make this entire season about endurance and not about speed. With less than two years of solid running under my belt, trying to add speed work would probably have caused injury. I ran whatever pace felt good that day. Somedays I felt great running fast(9:30ish) and somedays I could have walked faster. I ran almost every single long run about 30 seconds slower than my pace last year but I felt better and recovered quicker. It was hard to watch my former running mates speed away from me but it was worth it later that day when I was pain and ache free.

I also got very careful about eating immediately after a run. I learned to choke down about 20oz of accelerade after every run. Eating immediately after a run had the added advantage of keeping that bone deep "iam training for a marathon" hunger at bay.

I am going to put the whole thing on a spreadsheet this week. If you want a copy, let me know.

Thanks for sharing and yes, if you would send me a copy that would be great. I am not in this for speed. I have no desire to be a lot faster, just want the endurnace. My boss, who did his first marathon with me, wants to do his next marathon in under 4 hours which is a 48 minute improvement. I really don't care, I'd rather do a 5K, half then full in a slower time but finish.

thanks,
Duane

Interesting on the split runs, I was wondering about that as that may be my best way to get the necessary miles in.

Alright. I have the spreadsheet all finished now I just have to figure out how to post it. Anyone have a clue?
