Good Golly Gawrsh! It's a 2015 10-year anniversary Goofy PTR

Hi Gisele!

I paused right here in your post and just though..."Uh-oh." :sad2:

Yeah, it's a feeling we all share as runners. That dread of getting hurt and throwing off our training schedule. The worst part is I will have to redo my spreadsheet. ;)

Wow, beautiful pictures! That sounds like a nice hike, even if it was a tad bit warm. You're encouraging me to check out the parks in my area, I'm sure a change of scenery is really nice every once in awhile. :)

We really are lucky to have some nice trails to use. It was an absolutely gorgeous day and the surroundings were awesome.

Honestly, I think I would have done the same thing. :confused3 I think it's hard sometimes to know the difference between pain that is an injury and pain that is soreness. I mean, it's not like running is EASY and feels like rainbows and unicorns all the time!!!

Exactly and I have to just keep telling myself that. There have been plenty of times I've run on sore legs and I've been fine. Sometimes it's just hard to tell which you are dealing with while in the middle of the run.

Yeeeeouch! So sorry to hear about this! A couple of weeks off of running doesn't sound ideal, but you're smart to shut it down now. Like you said, you still have tons of time left in your training!!! :) I hope you feel better soon!

Thank you! I can already tell some improvement, so I do think given the right amount of rest, I'll be back at it soon.

I am sorry that you are now injured. Like Shannon... I too would have pushed. I think it is hard for runners for the exact reason she mentioned. We always are aching or are sore. So when is it an injury or something to just push through is a hard call. :goodvibes On the upside though, that does look like an amazing place! So pretty!

I always worry too if I'm hurting during a run if I'm just letting the mental side of things get to me and so I try to shut down those messages. Most of the time that's the right thing to do. Just not this time.

And, yeah it really is an amazing spot. They do fishing excursions and trail rides too and there's a beautiful little chapel on the property. As we were walking back, there was a wedding finishing up and it was such a pretty setting.

Hi Gisele...Just found your trip reports and this training PTR. I'm always looking for fun runDisney trip reports so I look forward to following along! Hope you feel better and can get back on the road soon!

Hi, Kyle. :goodvibes

I've been subscribing to a lot of runDisney trip reports too. Just haven't had the time to read all of them yet. They really help inspire me. Thanks for the well wishes. The leg is improving every day and I'm feeling more confident that a couple of weeks will take care of it. I see you've got a training report going too, so I'm going to pop over and check it out. Glad you are here.

Well, I'd normally do my weekly training wrap up about now. But, with the injury, my workout this week looked like...

Sun- Rest, Ice, Ibuprofen
Mon- Rest, Ice, Ibuprofen
Tue - Rest, Ice, Ibuprofen
Wed - Rest, Ice, Ibuprofen
Thur - Rest, Ice, Ibuprofen
Fri - Rest, Ice, Ibuprofen
Sat - Rest, Ice, Ibuprofen

Total Miles: A big fat ZERO!

Boo!!!!! :worried:

Today was hard especially. It was our Galloway group run and we were also supposed to do our Galloway Magic Mile. I hated watching everyone else run, but I was there to cheer them on as Chris led the charge. :thumbsup2

The leg really is much improved, but just not fully healed yet and I sure don't want to run on it prematurely and cause even more damage, so I have to be patient. Just FYI, patience is DEFINITELY not one of my virtues. :sad2: I've contacted a local sports massage/therapy person who came highly recommended, so I'm hoping to get in with her next week and have her do some work on it as well.

Anyway, since I can't really talk about my running, I thought I'd take this opportunity to talk FOOD! Glorious FOOD! Or more specifically, what food to eat while running.

Chris and I recently decided to make some changes in our diet. Back in February we did a Whole 30. If you are curious about it, you can read more here http://whole30.com/ But, short story is for 30 days you eat a very restricted diet that excludes all added/processed sugars, grains, legumes, and dairy. You concentrate on eating whole foods and try to minimize and eliminate processed foods and additives. We completed the Whole 30 and felt like we wanted to continue to eat as healthy as possible, so we still severely restrict all those items although we aren't quite as stringent as we were on the Whole 30. With our training picking up in mileage though, we've wanted to experiment with some different things to eat while running.

In the past we relied mostly on Cliff Bars, Jolly Ranchers, sport beans and the occasional Gu and then Cytomax for our electrolyte drink. All of these items have ingredients we are trying to restrict. So, the search was on for whole food alternatives that would work but still be portable enough to run with AND meet our dietary needs. After some research, we settled on some of these items to try.

To replace the Cliff Bars, we are planning to use these...

These are basically nuts, dried fruit, honey etc. We've used these on a run and they worked pretty well for us.

In place of Jolly Ranchers, we are going to try these...

We heard about these from Jeff Galloway himself at our Galloway kick-off meeting. It's basically pellets of dehydrated fruit. Sounds delicious right? :rotfl: But, one of the things I liked about Jolly Ranchers was being able to tuck it into my cheek and let it dissolve slowly. While these won't dissolve, I'm hoping I can use them in a similar manner.

For the Gu replacements we read about eating baby food. Um, that didn't sound especially great, so in doing some more reading I heard some suggestions to try these....

It's still basically baby food minus the jar. ;) We've used these before some long runs and they actually taste pretty good and seem to do the trick.

On one of the threads on here talking about race foods (and, BOY, did people have strong opinions about this. ), I mentioned wanting to find more whole food alternatives and someone directed me to these...

These are blends with almond or hazelnut butter. Also, there are some cold brew coffee shots that we are thinking can replace the sport beans with caffeine that we preferred. Haven't tried these yet, but I'm anxious to do so.

As far as drinks, I found this online...

These are drops you add to water and are strictly electrolytes without any sugar additives. This one has some citric acid in it that gives it a slight lemon taste. Or so they say. We haven't tried it yet, so not sure how it will be.

I have a friend who works for Camelbak and she sent me these...

These do have sucrolose added to them, but it looked like less sugar added then in most other sport drinks.

I know that some concerns with eating more of these whole type foods while running is that they tend to have more fiber content than typical running foods. And, fiber and running might be a problem. :scared1: I guess we shall see.

Once we've tried everything, I'll report back to see how we fared with all of it.

I am sorry you are having to exercise patience when it comes to your training. Looks like you are putting that energy toward some good use though! :thumbsup2 I think food/nutrition is a fascinating and important part of training. I do wonder if fiber would have negative affects but the natural side of the products you are looking at is definitely intriguing. My dh can't have high fructose corn syrup and not it is thought that it is more a fructose malabsorbtion problem. A LOT of product have fructose. So really it becomes a matter of honey being a better option. (I think). I look forward to reading more about what you think of these products! I am sure the clif bar replacement sounds like a winner! :thumbsup2

Glad to hear you're feeling better! :thumbsup2 Hopefully the sports therapist can help you out. You've still got tons of time...sounds like you are being very smart in your recovery.

Those seed/nut bars you posted look gooood! I think I've seen recipes online for something similar. Will have to look into this more...LOL at the baby-type food!! :rotfl2:

On one of the threads on here talking about race foods (and, BOY, did people have strong opinions about this. )...
...what a weird thread that was.

ACK! I got one of these in last month's StirdeBox...but I was so frustrated that they hadn't canceled my order when I thought they did that I just threw everything away! I wish I'd tried this. :headache:

Chris has really adjusted to using honey as a sweetener. I like it in some things, but not everything. But, I have adjusted to just not having sweetener in a lot of things and once I got used to it, it's been okay. I still miss chocolate though.

Those bars are really tasty. We haven't tried all of them yet, so not sure which will end up being a favorite.

...what a weird thread that was.

I know, right? I mean, everybody has differing opinions on the right way to train, to eat, to prepare and it's not a one-size-fits-all approach. I always think it's weird when people get so defensive about their viewpoint on stuff like that. If it works for YOU, great! If not, then some other approach might be better. Like Coach says on here a lot, "We are all an experiment of one." It's what's great about running.

Well, I may end up throwing them away too after I try them. :rotfl: I'll be sure to let you know how they taste and work for us.

It's really a bummer that your training has stalled but in the long run you'll be glad you decided to take a break. I've had to take extended breaks and visits to the PT in fall of 2012 and 2013 because I didn't listen to my body. A little rest now prevents a lot of rest later :)

As for the race fuel, it looks like you have some interesting options. I'm more of a plain Jane GU type of guy but I'm also looking for a more healthy alternatives.

Thanks, Kyle. I know it's for the best, but MAN, it's hard to keep resting it. But, it's a little better each day although now my stupid knee hurts. I'm assuming it's from my altered gait for a few days when I first injured it. Ah, the joys of being a runner. ;)

Kinda sounds like I missed out on the fuel debate. ;) Sounds kinda silly that there was a debate  what works for one does not necessarily work for others. AND we all like different things. I am always curious what people use though. Not because I want to judge them or think they are wrong...but because who knows.. maybe it is a better option for me.

Sorry about you still being sidelined... Kyle is right though. A little rest now will save you in the end. :goodvibes

Exactly! I don't get these debates. :confused3

Pretty much everything I've ever tried has been at someone else's suggestion. Some things worked for me, so didn't. Who cares? I use what I like and just move on from those things I don't.

Sorry about you still being sidelined... Kyle is right though. A little rest now will save you in the end. :goodvibes

It's continuing to improve. I may try and run with our group tomorrow for just a portion of the distance. We are scheduled to do 6 with the group, so I might see how 2-3 feels and then wait for the rest to finish. Crossing my fingers that I feel up to it and don't backslide if I do it.

Well, since I haven't been able to run for awhile, I have turned my excess energy into shopping for running apparel. :thumbsup2 I remember when I first started running thinking that, "Hey, this is really a pretty cheap sport to get into." Oh how little did I realize the amount of clothing, shoes, accessories, gadgets that are available to runners and it's all like catnip to me. :rotfl:

Anyway, first up...SHOES.

Like most runners, I have a type of shoe that is my prefered running shoe. I've basically run in the same shoe style since I started running seriously back in 2012. I run in a Saucony Kinvara which is a neutral, cushioning shoe with a minimal heel drop. When I first started running I had a gait analysis at our local running store and then tried several shoes. As soon as I tried on the Kinvara, it just felt right. As Chris likes to say, "Running shoes are like Harry Potter and wands. The shoe chooses the runner." ;)

Anyway, when I first started running I was in a Kinvara 3 and then eventually transitioned to a Kinvara 4. Now the Kinvara 5 is out and I'm not sure I like it. :worried: Seriously. Why do these shoe companies always have to be messing with the shoe design? Grrr. Anyway, the toe box is a bit wider on it and one of the things I've always like about the Kinvara is the fairly narrow toe box. I have a narrow foot, so I can have a problem with my foot swimming around a bit in a wider shoe. So, once I tried on the Kinvara 5, I went out to the internet to scarf up some old Kinvara 4s before they disappear.

I've also been doing some early planning on what I plan to wear for the Goofy run and so when I saw this pair I decided it would be perfect for the run in January.

Green and orange combo should be perfect for the Goofy-inspired outfit I'm thinking about (more on that in a subsequent post). Since that's a long way off, I will save these until much later in the year. These are actually the old Kinvara 3s, so I was surprised and happy to find them.

Meanwhile, my current pair still has some decent mileage left in them, but they won't last me through the entire training season, so I looked for a second pair to buy as well. I settled on these.

I've never had black shoes before. I've always had white or brightly colored shoes. I think I kinda dig them. :thumbsup2 Maybe I'll run faster in black shoes. ;)

Next up was clothing. I typically run in running skirts or capris and again when I first started running I bought a few different skirts mostly from Target. They were reasonably priced and pretty cute, so I got them. Then I discovered SparkleTech skirts. I heard about them here on the Dis and bought my first one, a pink Minnie polkadot that I ran my first Disney marathon in.

This is the regular cut skirt, so for the Marathon in 2014, I tried the slim cut skirt in black linen.

So, this year when I ran in one of my older skirts for a training run, I was just constantly irritated by the shorts in the skirt riding up. I decided that over time I was going to just transition all my running skirts over to SparkleTech skirts. There really is just no beating those built in shorts for comfort and storage capacity. So, I was off to the website to do some searching. I decided I wanted to get another slim cut and settled on this crazy skirt.

I thought it was awfully cute and fun and I could wear just about any color shirt with it. As I was looking around the website, I found just the shorts as an option without the skirt. I do like running in capris, so I thought well, these are just basically a shorter capri, so why not? Plus, the print was so cute!

I think they will be nice to run in as well. Not as many options for a shirt choice, but that's okay.

That about wraps up my shopping report. Although when I went to download these pictures it looked like there might be some new styles out on the SparkleSkirt site. Ruh roh. :hyper:

I have had my favorite shoe be a tad off when the new model came out more than once. That is ever so frustrating!!! I am glad you were able to snatch up some of the older model. I love the colors btw!! And black... well, I think I have had more black shoes than any other. Maybe they do help with pace. ;)

Skirts are my absolute favorite thing to run in. I have some that I like more than others... and I really am leaning toward a sparkle tech. (I just have a regular sparkle skirt) The one you got... I was considering it and a shirt I found (rather than my current plan) for the avengers half.

Shopping is always fun... with all your finds you had definitely inspired me to go and get some shopping done. :goodvibes

Gisele, I luurrrve your new shoes! :lovestruc The "Goofy" shoes are perfect! I recently got my first pair of black shoes, too...like you, I totally dig them. They make me feel like a bada--! :cool1: I'm in Brooks Adrenalines 14s...loved the 10s, 11s and 12s, didn't love the 13s so much. I LOVE the 14s, so hopefully the next cycle of your shoe will be better. I'm with you though, why do they mess with a good thing?! :headache: Finding the right pair of shoes is so important...once you do, it's frustrating when they get changed. I like Chris' Harry Potter-ism when it comes to shoes! :thumbsup2 :wizard:

GIRL. You know I love me some SparkleSkirts!! :lovestruc You are so right that other shorts just do not compare. I have SparkleSkirts and Moving Comfort shorts...always tugging the MC shorts down, but the SparkleSkirts are perfect. Pricey, but totally worth it. Love your new skirt and shorts...I don't think I have the confidence to run in the shorts alone, personally :rotfl: But I will be curious to hear how you like them!

Aaaaaand now I'm off to look for more skirts! :stir: Hope the hamstring is feeling better!!!

So I had to copy you. I got the skirt but not in the slim cut. (I should have got the slim cut rolleyes: )

Shopping is dangerous for me. Once I get started it's hard for me to stop. :rolleyes1

I love my new skirt. I went for a run with our group a couple of weeks ago (and shouldn't have  ), and I got soooooo many complements on it. Everyone loved it. I still haven't worn the shorts, so I'm not sure I've really got the confidence for it either. :lmao:

So I had to copy you. I got the skirt but not in the slim cut. (I should have got the slim cut rolleyes: )

Bummer. I saw where you posted about it on Karen's thread. You know, the slim cut is maybe a skosh tighter across my hips than I would like, but I feel like the regular swing skirt is just too loose. It's tough when you are sort of in between sizes as well. I'm glad you were able to call and talk to them about it though.

Hi Gisele! Hope your injury is all better!!!

 Well, still not better. :sad1: But, hopefully getting there.

I've been stupid and not stayed off the running like I should. I mean, I've limited my running a lot, but I really need to just stop entirely until it heals.

So, basically, I've been doing some sporadic running and while I haven't really made it any worse, I have sabotaged probably full healing. I had my regular doctor's checkup a couple of weeks ago and she wrote me an order for physical therapy. I've had two visits (my second one was last night). The first visit left me feeling a little  about it. She basically gave me some stretches to do that I could have found on the internet and gave me a tip for doing an ice massage. My doctor also wrote me a script for some Naproxin and she told me to take it two times a day for two weeks even if I felt like I didn't need it.

So, after the first treatment, I went home and faithfully did the stretches. Meh. The ice massage though does seem to be helping. I take a dixie cup and half fill it with water and freeze it. Then I tear the bottom of the cup out and use that to massage the muscle. It's miserable. But, it really does seem to be helping.

Last night I had the second therapy treatment with a different guy and WOW, he worked me over. He did a lot more stretching and checking on my pain and he really thinks a big part of my problem is actually limited flexibility and mobility in my hip flexor. That whole complex is tied together and he thinks that is contributing to my pain. He did some stretches that really helped to loosen it up. And, I think the more I've been icing it that it may be the adductor tendon that is really the problem. It feels really tight there when I ice it. So, all that blah blah blah to say it's still not fully healed, but I think I'm on the right track for rehabilitating it.

So, I'm taking another two weeks and committing to being completely off running. I'm getting so worried about losing too much conditioning and getting behind on my mileage for the November marathon, but it's just the smart thing to do so I need to stop being so stubborn about it. Chris keeps reassuring me that once I heal, the conditioning will return quickly. I hope he's right.

No real pictures to share on this update. Thanks for hanging in there with me, guys. :flower3:

:faint: I had to do the ice massage thing in high school when I had shin splints. I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. Yikes!

The hip thing makes sense. I've heard of that being a source of problems for a lot of people. I hope PT continues to help and that you heal soon...and NO RUNNING YOUNG LADY!! I'm sure you will be just fine for November.

I promise to behave on the no running. :thumbsup2

So, mini trip update. I've been faithfully stalking the Allegiant website waiting for them to release flights for our dates and yesterday they were there! :cool1: But, when I checked the cost, it was a little more expensive than we've paid in the past. Boo. :worried: So, Chris and I talked a lot last night about whether to go ahead and book or wait and see if prices went down. Of course, that also means prices could go up. So, we ultimately decided to just go ahead and book it. So, today I went on to book the trip and the price had dropped. :hyper: I was so happy.

So, we are all set with Allegiant to fly into Tampa on Thursday Jan. 8 (Allegiant only flies into Orlando/Sanford on Friday and we want to get there on Thursday) and then we fly out of Sanford on the following Friday. :cool1:

I emailed our house place to see if they could add on the Thursday day and he said no problem, so we are all set. I'm most excited that we should have time to get to the Expo on Thursday instead of late on Friday like previous years, so I'm hoping there will still be more items available than in years past.

Total for the flights including taxes, fees and baggage costs (Allegiant nickels and dimes you on everything) was $250.69 per person. I think that's pretty good. :woohoo:
