Gift ideas for 40th birthdays

Hey, I know two people, a man and a woman, who will be celebrating their 40th birthdays very soon. These will be fairly simple meet and get together to celebrate at a restaurant. I would like to show up with a nice little gift!

I know that I should have some ideas on what to get for them. But I am drawing a blank. Help!!!

What kinds if gifts have you seen for 40th birthdays?

For my 40th my family all bought me Home Depot GC as I was busy building a container garden. Do you know them well enough to know if they have any projects or hobbies?

Well, for the guy, I've thought about a high-end bottle of his favorite liquor...
(You know, to help numb the depression and pain of now being 'Over the Hill'... )

And, for the girl, I know a mani-pedi would be great.
(We may be getting older, but we still have to look Mahhhhvelous!!! )


Problem is, I don't live in the same community, (I live in a very small town about 45 min. away) and I would have to get details on where to get the booze or the gift certificate.

I would hate just up and ask, hey, where do you like go get your nails done.. or, what is your fave special liquor, and where can I find it....

Then again, maybe I just up and email and ask!!! There goes any surprize about getting a gift and what it will be!!!
