Getting older, thinking about selling our DVC, but

I hope to never sell my points even though I'm really not into the parks as much anymore. I am about 4 years out from retirement at age 70 if I make it that long. Having a place to call home in a warmer climate appeals to me and looking forward to grand child experiencing Disney with us keeps us young at heart. I recently added on more.

We are old. DH is 82, I am 68. DH has just suffered a heart attack and has a blood clot in his lung. Resale prices are attractive for sellers right now and we could use some extra cash for medical bills. But, as we old people REALLY understand, life is short and you have to make the most of whatever time you have. We have a trip booked that starts Oct. 13 and making that trip is keeping our hopes alive. We are not selling!

I am so sorry to read of your DH's medical conditions, Jean.:flower3: I hope and pray you guys can go and enjoy F&W this year!

Thanks, Bobbi. I am in the process of educating myself about the rules for oxygen on airplanes. There is paperwork for the doctor to fill out and the airlines has other paperwork. I need to figure out what equipment is allowed and what will work in Disney. We won't be spending a lot of time in the parks if we do manage to get there. If it is hot, like it sometimes can be in October, we may spend very little time in parks but at least we will still be in The Happiest Place on Earth! And the Boardwalk area does have almost a park atmosphere. Bob's recovery is complicated by his other health issues but he is one tough and stubborn guy and if he can get healthy enough to go, we will be there!
Have fun on your cruise! How are those new knees doing?

My knees are doing very well. I can walk better and go up and down steps so much better now. Before the operation, there were stairs in our house that I could only bounce down on my butt! I use the handrails and walk down now. I am so happy! DH and I go for mile walks without my needing a cane, we are working toward walking a 5 K! I do use a cane in crowds, my balance still needs help. When I go for the 6 month check up, I am going to ask for more physical therapy for balance. Thank you for asking, Jean.

Bobbi:)

So happy to hear of your improved mobility, Bobbi! It is a testament to your work ethic because I know that knee replacement therapy is not for the faint of heart. And not many people ask for more therapy! A frequent and world traveler like you needs the ability to get around. Can't wait to hear what you think of Aulani!

Been an owner since 97, kids are getting older but still love going to Disney, We have changed our itinery in the past few years not going to the parks as much and enjoying the entire WDW resort more these days (fishing trips, golf, and just hanging out at the pools more) we would never sell our membership...just saying

They can pry the DVC memberships out of my cold, dead hands:rolleyes1 plan on visiting up until the bitter end.

we often take our immediate family along for the ride or gift them points to use. do have our membership set up as 3 contracts to go to each kid when the time is right.

You will be there when we are! We start October 12. I'm hoping to go to Disney until I breathe my last. 43 now so hopefully years of trips ahead of me. I tell my kids that I keep fit and healthy so I can keep walking around Disney world.

I'm taking my 64-year-old mother with me for her very first (and hopefully not her last!) F&W Festival:drinking1. We are staying from October 15-20 at Pop Century since I didn't want to dip into our shallow pool of DVC points (only own 150) for just the two of us. We don't need anything fancy anyways. In making our plans, I realized that there are a lot of things mom hasn't done since her last trip in 2012...Test Track (updated), the new Fantasyland (7DMT and BOG) and the new venue for the Festival of the Lion King (one of her favorite shows!:simba:). It seems strange that those things are all less than 3 years old, yet to me, it's "old" since I've been there twice since they were introduced. This will be my 17th visit to WDW in my 40 years of life and I can still say that I have done at least one new thing on every trip. Sometimes it is a restaurant, sometimes a tour, sometimes an attraction...but I have yet to run out of things to do to "keep it fresh". Even if Disney didn't announce these awesome new additions, I would still savor every trip, every year because I know that there will always be something new for me to try:love:.

I will never sell. I need my Disney fix to stay alive! Took the Minnesota grandbabies for the first time this past June. Will take the NJ grandbabies in March. That will be the first trip for each of them. I intend to plan many more for them!

I imagine myself being older and spending two or three weeks in a villa with few visits to the park. Just relaxing at the pool, sitting on the balcony looking at the Savannah, making nice dinners. Ahhh.........

Will be 99 when points at OKW and BCV expire and then there are the ones at SSR. Guess my children and grandchildren will just have to make use of them for whatever time remains after I am gone. Can't even imagine selling them.

Can't imagine ever selling (of course I just became a member last year) because I always want to go to Disney. Even living three hours away I wish I could go more.

Imagine if I lived in Orlando...

I love not feeling like I have to "do" the parks. In the past it was like "okay we've got these three day park hopper tickets, we have to get our money's worth..." So we'd be at the gates at rope drop and be dying by extra magic hours. This past weekend we did a weekend getaway because I was able to snag a good rate on a cash reservation at the Grand Floridian. We were in MK on Saturday when it started monsooning with no signs of stopping. Instead of trudging through the rain and forcing ourselves to stay we went back to the Grand and plopped ourselves on a brocaded couch in the lobby and listened to the orchestra whilst watching people slink in from the monorail soaked to the skin. We figured "we have passes, we have DVC, we'll be back."

The next day we went into MK for about 20 minutes: long enough to pick up an engraved gift at the glass store we had ordered the night before when the rains started. It was probably our shortest park time ever. But we have passes. We'll be back.

That's probably the best part of DVC to me: knowing we'll be back!

As we get older, we find we spend more time at Vero Beach and Hilton Head. So the points are still in good use! If grandchildren come along, I'll have the theme park option.

Sounds like Disney might have a lot of DVC members using points to the last moment possible. They should make a DVC graveyard by the haunted house for us. Wonder what point cost and maintenence dues would cost. Maybe that could be a new sells incentive, Die before your points do and transfer your points towards purchase of grave at Haunted Mansion, afterall there is always room for 1 more.

An iconic DVCer and DISer whose screen name was Richyams now rests in peace in that very graveyard. This is copied from a tribute site for Rich:

"Rich's legacy... / Lisa (love of his life )
Rich's ashes were scattered in Walt Disney World (his favorite place in the world) at these areas: -Animal Kingdom: Tree of Life - Epcot: Germany (Flower garden), Japan (Large tree in the flower garden) - OKW Resort: On the rocks behind the Lighthouse, behind the last building, facing the golfcourse - Boardwalk: From the balcony at BWV, right next to Jellyrolls - Magic Kingdom: Haunted Mansion, right next to tombstone reading "Here Lies Good Ol'Fred, a great big boulder fell on his head", at the exit wall. Finally, you can see his "legacy" at Epcot, where it reads "Richyams....a legend" with a large heart!"

How strange that I should look at this post tonight. Was just thinking of Richyams yesterday and wishing there were more fun posts like he used to be involved with. Sure do miss his presence on these forums.

I'm semi-retired. After hearing all of the latest news, I actually wish I could bank 2 or 3 years worth of points and take several trips with the grand kids when things open up!

Any ashes at Old Key West? I thought he disliked Boardwalk.
