Gardasil

My doctor had HPV so she recommended getting vaccinated. I'm not worried..but I have to get the first one I guess on my check-up in September. What ever protects me protects me.

Nobody's ever broughten it up....I don't have a cancer history in my family, does that make a slight difference?
I'm not sure about getting it either, I am absolutley terrified of shots. :\ If nobody brings it up, I won't.

I just got my 3rd and final shot on Monday. They don't hurt very much at all. They gave them to me in my upper right arm.

You don't just have to be sexually active it is for everyone. I HATE needles also, but really, it is one of the smallest... most unhurting(if thats a word??) shots I have ever gotten. You have to have three. I have had two of them. Afterwards, mine is red and itches for a few days afterwards. I got mine in my left, upper arm. I had to play tennis soon after that so I asked which arm it had to be in and they said that it didn't matter so maybe you can also pick. You'll be fine.. just don't look. :thumbsup2

I got it. The medicine hurt when it went in. It was stinging all down my arm.

They also make you sit there for 10 minutes, because it can cause you to faint. I didn't. I'm fine with needles and stuff, it doesn't skeeve me out. So I jumped right up and walked out the door.

I still have 2 more to get. It's no biggy though. And if it protects you from HPV and cervical cancer, why not?

I also have to get the menangitous (sp?) shot before I head off to college next year.

Can any type of family cancer cause it? My grandpa died of pancreatic cancer(but he also smoked). And my great grandpa died from cancer too.

I have never really thought much about this but now that theres a thread, Im startin' to worry.

Is there anyway without the shot to protect yourself from not getting it?

Don't have unprotected sex. Cervical cancer can be caused by certain STDs.

I don't know if it's genetically passed on or if it can form from other cancers in your family..I wouldn't think so, but I'm not a doctor..:confused3

You don't have to be sexually active to get cancer....

Its protecting you from Cervical Cancer which is caused by HPV (human papilloma virus) There are 36 (I believe) strands of it. HPV is the deadliest STD-and the most common.

Even if you're not sexually active, even if you're saving sex till marriage, that doesn't mean the person you marry has. THEY could have HPV and they could infect you. Cervical cancer can kill you, but if it doesn't kill you, it could prevent you from ever having children of your own.

This shot only fights 4 strands of it. But it fights the 4 leading cancer causing strands.

If you're not sexually active, I still highly suggest you get this. You never know what might happen down the road, but this could help you keep yourself safe.

This is not a birth control method, and it will not protect you against any other stds. Use this shot, with the pill and/or condoms. (I suggest and. both are 99.9 percent effective, but do you want to be that .1 percent? Double protection is better than none at all)

If you are sexually active, GET THIS SHOT. You and your boyfriend may be faithful, but how do you know who he had sex with before you two got in a relationship, and who did that person have sex with? Youre still at risk.

Its a needle, yes its scary, yes it hurts, but it will only hurt for a second, and I can promise you it hurts less than cervical cancer does.

My mom said I was going to get HPV shots, but I guess she or the doctor decided just to give me my tetanus shot.
The only reason I was probably going to get an HPV shot is because the doctor brought it up...I don't know when I'll get that shot.
Sometime I suppose. Next time I go maybe.

But I don't think any kind of shot will bother me [I think...I don't know until I get the shot]...My last one didn't seem to have any painful effect. Everyone said it was horrible [Even my 2 friends came out crying] but when I went toget it....I felt nothing and they said your arm would be sore afterwards....and it still feels the same.
And all the other people who got it were complaining at school because their arm hurt.
I guess i'm just different.
But I'm not afraid of needles.

Here in AZ they want to make it mandatory for all girls between 7th and 9th grade. I mean, I wish it wasn't needed but because we're making these choices its necessary.

I know its a shot....and I know shots hurt. But like someone else said, I'd rather have the shot than cancer. I'll talk to my mom about it. See what she thinks.

The thing that I hate is that guys can't be tested for it...and some guys are natural carriers of it....they won't show any symptoms of it....so if you have had multiple partners, you won't be able to tell which guy it was....

Yeah the Dtap....its so important for all of us to get it. If you do get bacterial meningitus...you get hospitalized and it basically fries your brain...yeah its serious..I'm getting mine next week. I'll let you know how it goes.:goodvibes

my mom is signing my up for it. I don't have a problem with needles, I don't think shots hurt.

I was unaware that some men are natural carriers of it. Thats kindof scary.

Erm, so if you aren't sexually active, is it possible in any way to get it?

But I'm not afraid of needles.

There is one episode of House, where he is on a plane, to go back to the US from Singapore (I believe, correct me if I'm wrong).
A man starts vomitting violently. Then another women does too.
House looks into it, and in the end, many people are sick. He tells them they have meningitis, and more get sick.
Which just proved that their anxiety made them sick, because the man who started it all had gone scuba diving the day before (which caused something, I've forgotten the name).

I basically believe, that if you go into the doctor's office or wherever you get the needle, all afraid about the pain, all afraid of pointy things, and basically just WAY out your element, then YES it will hurt. You're making it worse out than it was.
One time at school, we were getting shots. One person faints, the rest of the class decides they don't feel well.
I have never walked in there afraid of the person giving me a shot, or giving me a blood shot, and it has never hurt. Maybe a day afterwards, but it feels like I bruised myself. That, is normal.

Coming from a cancer patient -

GET THE VACCINE!

I would rather have to get ONE needle to PREVENT cancer, than to have to get LOTS of needles weekly due to chemo because you actually HAVE cancer.

Sorry if my opinion is a little strong, but you don't want cancer.
Trust me.
