Alrighty then, since some of you were talking about them thus making me drool onto my shirt..........does anyone have a good recipe for making them?

Fried Green Tomatoes SOUND good and the movie was good.....hee hee, but do they taste as good as they sound? I keep thinking bitter tasting. Hm........

share your recipes here please. :D

Ok, here goes........

4 VERY hard, very green tomatoes
1 Cup of Buttermilk
1 Cup of Flour
1/4 Cup of Corn Meal
1 tsp of salt
1 tbs of pepper

Cut up the tomatoes in thick slices and soak them in buttermilk.
Combine the flour and cornmeal and salt and pepper.
Roll the slices in this mixture and then fry them until brown.

Ooooohhhhh...that sounds great! I love fried green tomatos with Hienz ketchup on them.....Yummers!

while you are at it, slice up some yellow squash. that is good fried too.

I like mine sprinkled with sugar. Oh man, I love fried Green Tomatoes.

I've had them in restaurants and love them but wonder where one would buy green tomatoes? I don't have a yard so I can't grow them myself........ Is this something that is sold in the south, in their grocery stores? All the tomatoes in our stores are ripe.

Grocery stores sell green tomatoes here. Some stores actually sell a fried green tomato kit. I don't make them often, but there are several restaurants in my town that have them on the menu.

You can occasionally find green tomatoes in the store in the South, or by a roadside stand.

If you're ever in Austin, Threadgill's has awesome fried green tomatoes- the best.

I agree with adding a pinch of sugar. When I'm frying chicken, I add a bit of powdered sugar to my flour mixture...really enhances the flavor.

You don't need a yard. If you have a balcony you can grow just about anything in a container. IE; large flowerpot filled with potting soil.

We just use salt, pepper and plain old flour. Ours are sliced thin and we cook them in hot oil. I like to dip mine in BBQ sauce, but they are good plain too. OK, now I have to go get some, I am hungry!!!!

This is how we grew our for the last five years!

Another Piglet agreeing to this method.............:) The Super WalMart by us sell green tomato's. On the way to the store now so I will have to pick one up and have it for a late lunch.

DisMN - I'm assuming based on your screenname that you are from Minnesota. If so, there is stand at the MN State Fair every year that sells fried green tomatoes. They're quite good.

Was just gonna mention that; planning on having some on Thursday at the GREAT MINNESOTA GET TOGETHER!!:crowded: :crowded:

Being from the south, I LOVE Fried Green Tomatoes, although I seldom eat them and save them for a special treat. I was surprised that no one told you to fry them in Bacon Grease! Frying them in anything else just isn't the same.

Another Minnesotan here. I was just getting to the end of the thread when someone was able to say that the MN State Fiar sells them. They were quite tastey! I had them 2 years ago. They used ranch dressing as the dip when I had them anyway. YUM!!!!!!!!

Now for this year's deep friend Reuben on a stick and oh yes, that deep fried CANDY bar (YUCK!):crazy2: That just has to be against some natural law or something!

Tried the deep-fried candy bar (Snickers) last year...it was disgusting, but I finished it anyway! The MSF is the one time a year when I forget about my diet and eat like a real Minnesotan; fried cheese curds, buckets of Sweet Martha's chocolate chip cookies, and as many foods-on-a-stick as I can find....
