My hubby and I love to travel as well, and you are spot on about China being sooooo much outside our american "box"! You seriously need to jump on it if you have the chance....I can't imagine the anticipation, the sights, the unbelievable memories that you would create!

Now I know that they have gone above and beyond "fixing" up Bejing, but there would be so many other things to see and taste and smell :rotfl2: besides the actual Olympics...

I'm am jealous just thinking about the fact that you're thinking about going! :lmao:

I know. See here's the deal. We can afford it most definitely, so money isn't a factor. I don't think it seems too appealing to my husband who would much rather buy a brand new boat..haha. I think he envisions dirt, the terrible smog, stinky smells, eating cats, ya know.. all the pessimistic stuff. Whereas I see the chance go experience what a lot of people don't... without seeing it through a television screen.

I did read that the AP released an article saying that Chinese Islamists were planning on attacking the 08 Olympics and that everyone needs to take it very seriously.
"Do not stay on the same bus, on the same train, on the same plane, in the same buildings or any place the Chinese are," he warns Muslims, according to a translation by the SITE Intelligence Group, a U.S. operation that monitors militant organizations. ( http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,399422,00.html )

Okay so that freaks me out just a tad. Not enough not to go because I think every major event will always have a threat. We are threatened everyday in life. However... its helping me weigh my options.

DH is due for 'vacation time' at work... and im a housewife so I can surely use a break too! I dont know... i just have to talk him into it now!

Although I would love a new bedroom set. AHH I can get that later in life.
Did i mention my birthday is this month? LOL

Okay so I have a confession! I am desperately pleading with my husband to take me to the olympics next week in Beijing! PLEASE tell me I am NUTS! I have found airplane tickets and everything already... just waiting to click to submit! I know I know... WHAT AM I THINKING??

Okay, here's what im thinking. Ive travelled a lot in the little time ive been alive (Ireland, England, Wales, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, etc). I LOVE to travel. I've just never been somewhere with such a language barrier... and I think culture diversity is great! As I've wrote before, DH and I are trying for a baby. I really think it will be relatively soon! So here's my chance, right? Plus, they made China Week on the Travel Channel look so appealing! I mean... not that i want to eat weird food (like cats- :scared: ) but I really think it would be an experience of a lifetime! Once children come... im doomed (okay, not DOOMED, but probably wont be looking to travel outside the country for a LONG while!).

SO tell me, am I nuts?

If you have the opportunity to go I think you should do it. You are so right in thinking that once you have an infant it will cut into travel like that....at least for a while, but it IS so worth it if you want children ~ I know that life isn't cut for everyone. And what better conception story!!! You can embarass your child later in life telling everyone how you went for the gold in Bejiing and got them. IF you end up pregnant you will so need to make a shirt that says "I went to the Olympics in Bejiing and all I got was this" with an arrow pointing to your tummy :lmao:

You are SO not nuts! If you can go, then GO! It's a chance of a lifetime with or without kiddies! HIT THE SUBMIT BUTTON! NOW! And then we can all live vicariously through you!

   Screw the bananas and start packing!

Banana's will not achieve what she is trying to achieve

And on another note, the extraction went okay. Top wisdom tooth was quick & "easy". The bottom wisdom tooth did not want to co-operate and he had to SAW it in 1/2 and pull it out in pieces because it didn't want to come out whole :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: He really made sure I was number up really good so there wasn't any pain per se but lots of pressure. The novacaine hasn't worn off yet so ask me tonight how I REALLY feel about the whole experience :sad2: I am soooo gonna be in a drugged stupor for the next 48 hours!!!

I think you are the one who's gonna need the rum!

That is exactly how I see it, too!

I understand you hesistance, but you are right that ALL major events are forever more going to carry the possibility of a threat, but I would think the gov't is still really on top of those things, and if we let fear run our lives we might as well never leave the house!

YIKES:scared: I hope the pain stays limited!! The word SAW just gives me visions of a big blade with LONG jagged edges going at me! YIKES!! Good thing thats over with for now!! Glad you did okay!

So im starting to doubt that we are going to be able to go. Last night we were watching TV and thats when I brought it up after a commercial. "Hey babe (in my sweet wifey voice)... would you take me to the olympics this year" (In a joking manner). He took it more seriously and said "I bet tickets are THOUSANDS of dollars". So i got online and told him they weren't. So we went to bed and we kept talking about it and he said he would look at his work schedule tomorrow (today) and see if he could manage to get off. Ofcoarse.. he can. But I just got a call from him saying he thinks we should get vaccinated and stuff. I can tell he doesn't really want to go. Hes not a worldly traveller like I consider myself to be (although he hasnt experienced the other good places like I have... like England and Ireland.. he's only been to Mexico with me). So he thinks all places are dirty and grimy other than here. Which... by all means is justified because its all he knows.

Lets hope he is still considering it.

Until then... i need some rum and a few banana's!

Well, the fact that he's thinking about little details like that might indicate that he's really considering it....??? At least it would with my husband. With mine he pretty much says no if it's no, but if he "thinks" about it...it usually happens! :thumbsup2 When my husband even mentions a trip, I secretly start packing! :rotfl:

:rolleyes1 Not to get political- But the whole Tibet- China thing? I am on the Dalai Lama's side:rolleyes1

Save your money for the little bambino!

On the practical side of going to China - do you have a visa? I think there is a waiting period to get one. If you can get one and have the means.. hey, why not? Let us know what you decide!

Well Im pretty sure its off. He's just way to concerned and I dont want to fork out that much money on a trip and he not be somewhat satisfied with the decision..

So back to freaping and  bread!

Maybe I can talk him into going to Hawaii or something next month. We are going on a cruise in December with a group we go with every year. Id just really like to do something big.... since i love to travel.. before we have kids. ya know? China sounded adventurous... but might not be the wisest thing with the way the world is right now.

I agree. China's not on my short list of places to visit any time soon, I'm not too happy with their politics! And anyway.. there's so many places I want to see first!

Spur of the moment is fun- but I would think something that big might take a little planning.

Hawaii sounds fun!

Yeah we have had one!

Yeah, see I am crazy like that. I am a big organizer here at home... but when it comes to going somewhere im really spur of the moment. Too much anticipation and I get antzy! Trust me.. if DH was on go about it we would certainly be going! Oh well... maybe some other time. Did i mention China week on the travel channel really made me want to go? LOL... something about that Travel channel. I never wanted to ever go there until then. It used to be India... lol. I think ive raised my standards a little bit. LOL I do think the country as a whole (China) has a lot of political issues to work out though. I just thought the cultural diversity would be neat to experience... atleast when there are a few other americans over there. Which might have made me feel more easy.

Wow! I sit out one morning and miss tooth extractions, trips to the Olympics and fornicating fruit.:lmao: And....no one has ever aspired to be Marna junior before. I'm so honored. Well, I have been busy being Marna senior today. I've blanched and frozen a ton of green beans, done two loads of laundry:laundy: , made three batches of biscotti for my SIL and one batch of chocolate chip cookies for my FIL's b-day tomorrow. As soon as DS wakes up(YES! He's napping today!!!! ) we are making grandpa a birthday card.

Maggi-the Olympics probably would have been fun, but I'm with madd on boycotting China.:hippie: On a positive note, the 2010 Winter Olympics are in Vancouver and I'm so hoping we can go and take the kids. I think it would a wonderful experience.

Jennifer-you will love camping(I hope:rotfl2: )at the beach. It's so nice going to sleep with the sound of waves crashing. Do you have a tent or camper? We have always been tent campers but, now that I'm old I gotta have my blow up mattress.:rotfl2: If you are a total newbie I'd be glad to share some tips. Just send me a pm with any questions.:thumbsup2

I am SO glad I didn't click submit, because now I am extremely pissed off!

I was just watching the ABC Nightly News when I saw they have been tearing people's houses down to build parking area's for the Olympics!?:sad2: That is ridiculous! I'm sure these people aren't getting anything for their troubles. Where was I when that happened? :sad2:

:sad1: Yes- I saw something a few months ago on the nightly news that actually brought me to tears- and I rarely cry- it was an old man in a wheel chair with his wife and they just leveled their home b/c it was not "aesthetically pleasing to the eye" They were just sitting there with no where to go, crying.:confused3 :sad1: Their belongings all around them.:sad2:

They have been doing this for quite some time b/c they want everything to look all peachy for the Olympics:mad:

Like I said- I do not like to get too political- but it was well known that this was going on, and I have no idea why they allowed the Olympics to even be there.

But my opinion about China has not been very high for a long time now.;) :hippie:

hey everyone,
Wow Maggie that is some ways would have been fun but to now see that took peoples homes to make parking lots.:sad1:

IAHD glad things went okay for you.

We went back to the DR today. I am not healing as fast as they would hope. So they ran some lab work and did another culture to see if anything else is going on. I am getting very bored with being trapped in the house. So looks like the Visting nurse will still be coming for a few more weeks.
