Hmmm, I guess I'll just put in my experiences here! :bitelip:

I usually travel to Disney with my Mom who is a smoker, while I am not.

1. We always request smoking and have only not gotten it once. That was, indeed, at a DVC resort (OKW) and so Mom did not smoke in the room or on the balcony. She would instead walk down to the car and smoke in it (she really got to know the inside of that car, lol! Even when we have a smoking room she will usually smoke outside on the balcony, as I am becoming increasingly sensitive to smoking (it gives me a sore throat and a runny nose after a while which sometimes leads to a cold).

2. We have seen Disney enforce the smoking rule quite a bit in the parks. Once it happened to Mom, when she was in France. They had moved the smoking area and she hadn't realized this (she's kind of spacey and has even gotten in the wrong car at a gas station, lol!) She was about 20 feet from the new area, and was told to move to it which she did immediately. We've also seen people walking around with cigarettes who have been told to put them out by CMs.

3. As far as smoking in non-smoking rooms...I think that would be hard to enforce. Our non-smoking room (which Mom never smoked in) still smelled like smoke simply because it gets on her clothes, books, luggage, etc (and unfortunately mine too!! ). I was always worried that the house keeper would report us for smoking in the room-due to the smell-when that was not the case at all. So, I think it would be tricky to try to fine a person for smoking in a non-smoking room unless they were actually seen (or clouds of it were rolling out the window, lol!).

4. When travelling by myself, I don't request smoking or non-smoking. Smoke doesn't bother me unless I am breathing it directly inside (outside it doesn't seem to bother me) and I have a terrible sense of smell. When I get to the desk, I tell them it doesn't matter, just put me in the one that they have the most of, leaving the others open for those for whom it matters.

Anyway, that's been our experience. As far as great smoking locations at DVC resorts, we have found that building 25 at OKW is a great location! :D

When we checked in, we asked for non-smoking and were told there were none, actually we were told that they always save these rooms for "distressed" (airline term) people....I do intend to write a note to Holiday Inn/Delta.

Bobbi :D

Why? Suppose they didn't save the smoking rooms for the airlines, they'd still be out of non-smoking. :confused3

I have had a tough time getting smoking rooms on occasion too. But it doesn't bother me that much, since most places have balconies.

But I think alot of non-smokers are complaining about this. If a room is non-smoking so should the balcony. Disney shouldn't say it's okay.

I have never gone to an annual meeting, but why hasn't Disney made it so you can guarantee a smoking/non smoking room.

Maybe they like reading these long threads? :confused3:

1. Some of the statements made by some of the folks on this thread are intolerant. If they made those same statements about something you enjoyed, you'd be agreeing with me. Since they are making the statements about something which you find offensive as well, you do not see them as intolerant.
2. Thank you for welcoming me to America, but I was born here and am a woman, not a "son". The deprecating tone is not enthralling either, but if it makes you feel better, then knock yourself out.
3. Nastiness is offensive to those of us who try to be tolerant of our fellow human beings, even if our fellow human beings are nasty themselves.

Beca:
I never said anyone was faking. I said I was amazed at how evolutionally-developed some folks sense of smell is.

BTW, I will repeat, I am not, nor have I ever been a smoker. Heart surgery as a child pretty much put an end to any thought of smoking.

I don't believe there is any point in posting on this thread any further. It has degenerated into something of which I no longer choose to be a part.

Have a Disney day all!!!!!

Disney Doll,
I highly suggest you reread my post. No where did I welcome YOU to America. You seemed so AMAZED by so many things. I was trying to make a point on how two people from two different countries (MY SON AND MY DAUGHTER) can manage to have asthma due to the conditions of our present environment. I thought that might lessen your amazement. I don't see why you find it so amazing. Your amazement sounds to me more like you doubt all these people really have asthma. If you didn't get that point, sorry.

And, I am very sorry if you think I am intolerant because I do not like smoke blown in my face. I find it rude and disrespectful. If that makes me intolerant, then I guess I am. Oh well.

This has begun to deteriorate into a discussion not appropriate on the DVC Board. Please confine all posts to the original topic ONLY.

Further personal comments and comments off track from the topic of smoking optional rooms at DVC resorts will be removed.

Thanks!

I went "HOME" to SSR on 1/23/05 to 1/27/05 and I loved the resort! My only problem was our "NON-SMOKING" 2 bdrm lock-off (room's 1145 and 1147) had been used previously by a "SMOKER" :( ! Guest services came out a "SPRAYED" the room and we went through an entire bottle of febreeze, but the smell remained. Very disturbing (mad me very angry) everytime you walked into the master bdrm. IT REEKED OF SMOKE!!!! YUCK! As an exsmoker I think it tends to bother me even more because if I had been in a NON-SMOKING room I wouldn't have smoked! Why can't housekeeping alert guest services when someone checks out and they noyice that smoking was taking place in a non-smokig room? Then the people that were smoking could be charged a huge ($200.00) clean-up fee? That might deter at least a few of the SMOKERS who violate the rules! Just venting here........

We had the same thing happen to us at Pop Century. As soon as we walked into the room, we could smell the smoke. I immediately called the front desk and we moved to another room. It was such an awful smell. People are so inconsiderate and don't obey the rules. Next time, don't stay in the room, keep pushing for another one. They should be able to accomodate you.

I hope you are prepared for what might turn into a heated debate on your post. I would have to move. I would have a migrain headache the whole time. Strong smells do that to me. I cant walk into a store like Kirklands or Pier One. but you will hear people say that front desk told them to smoke because there were nomore smoking rooms.

Oh God help us. Another smoking thread! I'll check back when we get to page 17 or so. Should be plenty of bloodletting by then.

It's very possible that the previous guests requested a smoking room and were unable to secure one. It is not unheard of for the CMs to tell guests in that position that it's OK to smoke in the room anyway. Housekeeping may even have brought them ash trays. So the smokers may not have been violating any rules.

I'm sorry you were subjected to the smell and I hope you let them know (firmly but politely of course) how disappointed you were. Wouldn't hurt to write a letter now, either - if you haven't already.

Personally, I wish no one would smoke at all anywhere. But that's probably not going to happen in my lifetime. A better solution would be for DVC to make smoking/non-smoking a guaranteed reservation category and then strictly enforce it. (And that's probably not going to happen, either).

Best wishes -

I too am getting tired of these smoking threads but still read them. Let me be a little radical here(not for the first time). Disney needs to just bite the bullet and ban smoking. I know, I know there will be complaints out the Wh-zo and threats to sell and all that but after a few monthe of blood letting the dust will settle and Disney will moved into the 21st century like so many places have already done. OK that my openion and just my openion as a non-smoker...smjj

ditto....

I second it...

I am sorry too, but I couldn't have said it better!

We are going "home" for the first time in November and I have requested a 2br SSR.

We have a "medical" non-smoking request. Both of my children suffer from reactionary asthma. Staying 5 nights in a room in which someone had previously smoked would be unacceptable. I don't want a trip to the emergency room.

If I accept a room at the desk and find out after getting to the room that there was a lingering smoke smell, would they still charge me $$$ to change rooms?

When you check in, make sure you are explicit that it can't be a room that people have smoked in. If they assure you that the room is "smoker free", then accept it.

That way, if you get to the room and it smells of smoke, you can go back to the desk and get another room without charge. They can't charge you for a room change if they misrepresented the room to you upon check in.

BTW, our daughter has a similar condition. Non-smoking is the only request that I really care about. All the rest is just "would be nice" stuff.

Well, everyone seems to be saying Disney should ban smoking entirely. How about everyone write their Senators and Representatives in Washington so that Tobacco is declared a "controlled substance" and is no longer legally available for purchase? Wouldn't that solve the problem everywhere?

I really don't look to Disney to ban smoking everywhere. They rely on International tourism, and in many European countries smoking is much more accepted than here in the US.
