Food prices are up

I have posted my bacon vent before. Last year I was buying it at the meat market for $3.99 a pound and now its $5.99 a pound. Also deli meat is almost double what I can buy the meat itself for. I can buy the roast, ham or the turkey breast for almost 1/2 of what I pay for the deli meat. I understand that I am paying for the ease, but does sliced turkey really need to be $9 a pound?

What I don't understand is why some fruits are so much cheaper and others are so much more expensive. I use to buy apples and grapes without even thinking because they were so cheap, now I can get blackberries and raspberries and pineapples for cheaper.

I have the deli meat problem. It is just sooo good though and I can't replicate that perfectly thin sliced meat myself at home. I splurge on it every week.
I also buy a pound of roast beef for $12 once a month to make phillies for dinner. We love them but sooo expensive for a meal.

Stay away from those deli meats as much as you can. Year ago my then oncologist said those nitrites/nitrates are a big no no.

There some brands that don't use them. I believe Coleman is one.

Applegate is one. There are others - I believe no deli meats sold at Whole Foods have them.

Same for bacon - most have nitrates. Again you can get nitrate free ones.

we do this too-have a friend who's dad is "retired" and raises cattle for "fun"-grass finished, no hormones etc; split with another family and have a freezer still full of good beef nearly a year later (we are family of 5- for <$3/lb after processing; I took all the soup bones I could get as well:)). Have big garden started a few years ago (several raised beds). I hate spending money on food and refuse to spend it on junk food lol. Kids want that they buy themselves. Buying in bulk and splitting with another family is work, but does keep costs down

Applegate bacon is my favorite! I like their hot dogs too.

The BJs deli also carries Dietz & Watson, which offers nitrate free deli meats.

Aldi's have turkey and ham lunch meat that is nitrate free.

I swear the price of the things I usually buy have been going up and up and up. Aldi's which I love, has been out of organic produce almost every time I am there now?? So have to go to local store for more $$$ :( and there are a few things I buy they don't usually carry (organic potatoes, come on Aldi, please carry them!!!). Have been trying to do more meal planning and stick to it.

Boar's Head is another or at least everything I buy from them is nitrate free.

True it is expensive but if this is your splurge and it replaces eating out- your saving money.

We are trying to cut out eating out all together. I find that we do so much better if we inlcude some splurge items in our budget to keep us satisfied.

I'm not a big fan of Wal-Mart, but their price match is great! I've saved on our food budget by shopping there. I go thru all the ads and buy the loss leaders at Wal-Mart. Just this week Aldi's had peaches, plums, and grapes for 0.89/#. I think next week blueberries will be 0.99/#. If they don't have the exact brand that is in the ad then they substitute their brand. I never pay over 2.49 for a gallon of skim milk there is always somewhere that has it on sale for that. They've even priced matched gas station milk prices. It takes a little time to go thru all the ads and figure out what we need, but I've been doing it for a while now and stocking up when things are on sale. For some reason I don't like to buy their meats(although I do at Sam's Club, but Sam's seems better:confused3). I try to go to Sam's right as it opens and stock up on all the marked down meats and bring it home and freeze. That's what I've been having to do with a family of 3 teenagers. Sometimes we eat different things because that is what I could get cheap. Steak forget about it, it always seems to be 8-10 bucks a pound. When I was pregnant with my son 14 years ago I craved steaks and would get ribeye's weekly for $3.99/#, I miss those days.

I love how everyone says that about Wal-Mart but they still shop there lol. I'm proud to say I LOVE Wal-Mart!

Well what I don't like about it is that a lot of times when I go the shelves aren't stocked. Ticks me off when I can't find certain things, and a lot of times they don't carry the brands I use, but for price match on loss leaders I'll suck it up. If they ever stop the price match, I'm not shopping there.

Not this girl! I do not like them and will not/ do not shop there. They had the grill we wanted for $40 less and my husband was tempted... I asked him where he thinks those $40 off a $200 grill that no one else can afford to discount comes from. Yes they're cheaper, but the cost in every other regard is way too high for me to even consider it. :headache:

I put back a container of Entmann's ( not sure if that is spelled correctly) black and white cookies at the supermarket today. The box was $5.99! It was $3.99 a couple of months ago!

This past fall there set numerous articles about rising food costs. There was even a prediction that the average person would really notice the higher costs come summer, especially meats. I am blessed with a large freezer unit so I started buying the loss leader meats & wrapping them even more to prevent freezer. When boneless roasts were on sale I asked the butcher to grind them up into hamburger meat. I would then brown the meat & freeze in smaller size packages to be used later (for spaghetti sauce, taco meat, soup, etc). I also bought all my butter that was on sale during the holidays & froze that. I don't have a lot of pantry space otherwise I would have bought more loss leader canned goods in the fall. As I said before we are blessed with large freezer & ability to buy the loss leader meats when they were real cheap. Unfortunately I think food prices will continue to climb I am planning to put in a small garden this fall to have some fresh veggies

I had no idea you can ask them to do that!

Be vigilant when you do. my BIL used to work as a butcher in a major grocery store chain.

He said when they trimmed meat the fat was put next to the grinder. It cost them to have the fat hauled away. To minimize the cost whenever someone asked for meat to be ground a handful of fat was thrown in.
