FLU level high around Disney??

We leave today! So far, so good. I am seriously considering masks for the flight down... I know it sounds silly, but eeeks.

I should also post that if we do get sick, it isn't like we can come home to recover. We are going on a cruise right after. I am freaked that we will be denied boarding because one of us is sick.

We're supposed to leave on Thusday night...DD just got diagnosed today with flu. I'm trying not to stress, but I'm a hot mess stress pot!!! I know at this point there's not much we can do other than keep her brother (4) out of her face as much as possible & wash, disinfect, etc... and yes, we've all had flu shots :(

Hope he was given Tamiflu!

Unfortunately none of our docs will write script for preventative Tamiflu. Only way they'll give us one is if we go in and test positive. Kinda defeats the purpose, IMO. If we have a confirmed case, I don't get why they'd want us to get sick if taking the meds would prevent it.
Ugh...It's still my DD's 1st 24 hours, & not sure if I should give it to her based on the nasty side effects I've read about... her fever is only 100.3 and hasn't gone higher, she's eating and drinking and "feels fine", so I'm hoping it'll be a mild case for her since she's been vaccinated.

We just came back from the World and the whole time I was worried about getting sick!
The buses did not bother me, but all the handrails for the rides creeped me out!!! So what I did, I brought packs of antibac wipes and after each ride we all wipe down our hands. Also wiped down the tray tables on the plane!
Daily probiotics and vit c/echinachia/Zinc and OJ for breakfast helped too!

Strange to hear conflicting versions of this. There was a huge write up on the front page of the biggest newspaper in our state about how they are considering this year's flu shot to be "one of the least effective" flu vaccines in the past 10 years.

Fingers crossed we all steer clear for our trips!

Not sure who is conflicted? The major experts such as CDC and WHO are reporting that this year's vaccine is a great match, as it includes 3 of the 4 strains that are present at this time. I have not read anywhere that this year's vaccine is one of least effective at all. In fact, everything I have read says the exact opposite.

You need to remember that there are many other influenza like illnesses that are present for which the vaccine will not be effective.

Someone from CDC was on the news this morning. He stated that this year's vaccine was a good match, but reminded that the flu shot is only something like 70% effective.

Yup. As I stated above, this year's vaccine contains 3 of the 4 strains currently circulating.

Effectiveness on a widespread average is about 60% as reported by the CDC.

:thumbsup2

Thanks to those who are reminding people that flu is a respiratory illness, and not a stomach illness. The whole misnomer of stomach flu drives me batty and is one of my biggest pet peeves!

Good health to all, Tiger

We were there over Thanksgiving for 10 days. My DS and I both got it on our 2nd day there. We were both sick for 2 1/2 days. We could have caught it at home and brought it with, at the airport or who knows where. But it was not fun! Sending good vibes your way!!

We got home today. My husband, my oldest, and I all enjoyed a 12 hr NASTY stomach bug while we were there. I had it first and thought it was food poisoning until my husband started feeling ill 14 hrs later. Then our oldest (poor thing!) started feeling ill about 14 hrs after him. Luckily our middle and baby seem to be okay!

We were there in December for 9 days. We were fine until the last day--weather in the 80's. Our last day was cold and very windy. We did not get stay home kind of sick, but we did end up with runny noses. I guess this was from the cold and wind, but they did not clear up for a week and a half. I never thought about getting sick while we were there--just had fun.

Just got home today. Several of us ended up with a nasty stomach bug starting this morning. Fun fun flight.

Oh no! This is my biggest fear! We have all gotten flu shots but I hear that is not helping in some cases.

According to the CDC, the flu shot is 60-66% effective. According to others, it is much lower ~ 50% or less.

My friends just got back last week & brought the flu home with them.

We go next week & I'm worried about it... I'm afraid we'll get it here before we go. I have asthma kids, so the flu is bad for us. We got shots, so fingers crossed!!!

The flu shot does not protect you from all flu. It only protects you from the few they think to be bad this year

Thank you! It started with me on our second to last night, so we did enjoy the first 3/4 of our trip.

My oldest was sick flying home. We wanted to stay an extra night to let her recup, but with flight change fees and an extra night at a hotel, we're talking $800+. We had to fly with her. Thankfully, she passed out on the plane and woke up 10 minutes before we landed feeling much better! Hope your flight wasn't too bad and that everyone is feeling better!

Luckily it only lasted about 12-14 hrs. It was fast but nasty. Crossing my fingers for your trip!

We were at Disney last week, and none of my family got sick. We have all had the flu shot, and took precautions while there (sanitized the room, took airborne every day, and used hand sanitizer constantly). I will tell you that there were people coughing all around us. We tried to avoid all of the areas where people were obviously sick, but you have no way of knowing where the sick person came from. We just did the best we could.

We use airborne too. Start it a couple days before we go and take it all through the trip. Just stocked up at Costco the other day for our Friday trip. :)

This thread is a little scary and I feel sorry for those who experience illness on their magical experience. Hopefully, the flu is peaking now and when check in February 9th, the epidemic will have subsided.

Our 7.5 year old is down and out right now with this other virus going around here, especially on his bus. It is not the flu, luckily and hopefully, if he gives it to anyone else in the house, we will be good to go by the time we drive. Driving will definitely expose us to less germs.

I am here now and my biggest challenge has been avoiding ill CM's. So many of them coughing and sneezing especially at registers. One woman at the WL gift shop even had her head down on the counter between coughing fits and she was there a full shift because I saw her when I was going to Epcot and she was still there when I got back. The day before it was a male CM in the same condition at the same shop. So far I am staying well, but I feel like I have to be extra vigilant.

Ugh!!! I guess they get exposed to all the sick people every week.

No wonder we get sick EVERY trip!
