FLU level high around Disney??

Drink 100% Welch's grape juice... 2 glasses everyday starting tomorrow. This is a preventative measure to protect you guys from the flu... I have done research and this really does work...

How does this prevent illness? Is it the vitamin C? What makes it any different from anything else with vitamin C

We were at WDW the year the swine flu or bird flu or whatever it was hit the news. We saw LOTS of people wearing medical face masks walking around and hand sanitizer was no where to be found. I always take a large bottle of hand sanitizer and lysol wipes and spray and of course we have visited centra care several times for different illnesses. We leave again in a few weeks for another WDW vacation and I am praying we all stay well.

It's not the vitamin C. It's a chemical found mainly in the skins of grapes (and other foods) called r.e.s.v.e.r.a.t.r.o.l that is supposedly linked to flu prevention. The only problem is that you have to take high doses of it in order to get the desired effects. 1 cup of grapes only has about .24-1.25mg of r.e.s.v.e.r.a.t.r.o.l in it. You'd need to consume upwards of 20-40mg to have any chance of flu prevention properties. I'm not eating 20-40 cups of grapes! :)

Red Wine and Purple Grape Juice also contain the chemical. Red Wine has greater concentrations than Grape Juice, though I couldn't immediately find any numbers in a cursory search.

Plus, the studies I saw were only done on mice. ::MickeyMo

Pardon the periods in the chemical name. It was redacting it for some reason.

How much grape juice do you drink?

I copied and pasted the article....

May 31, 2005 (CIDRAP News) ***********, a chemical found in grapes and other fruits, inhibits the reproduction of influenza viruses in cell culture and mice, according to a recent report in the Journal of Infectious Diseases.

Rather than directly attacking the flu virus itself, *********** seems to block host-cell functions that are essential for viral replication, says the report by Anna T. Palamara and colleagues at the University of Rome. They write that the substance holds promise as a possible weapon against flu.

*********** is an antioxidant that is found in at least 72 plant species and is known to help protect the heart and nervous system and help prevent cancer, says the report. The researchers did a series of experiments in which they exposed cells to a flu virus and added *********** an hour later. They also exposed groups of mice to the virus and treated them with *********** or a placebo.

In an initial cell-culture experiment, treatment with *********** at 20 mcg/mL reduced flu virus replication 90%, and treatment with 40 mcg/mL blocked replication completely. However, because the higher concentration damaged the cells, the lower concentration was used in further tests.

The researchers also tested the effects of starting *********** treatment at different intervals after infecting cells with the virus. Treatment was most effectivereducing viral growth 87.5%when treatment began 3 hours after virus exposure. Effects were lower but still significant when treatment began 6 hours after infection, and treatment had no significant benefit if delayed until 9 hours after infection.

Given these and other findings, the researchers concluded that *********** interferes with the manufacture of proteins made late in the viral replication process, such as hemagglutinin, and limits the transport of viral ribonucleoproteins from the cell nucleus to the cytoplasm. The authors also determined that the molecular mechanism for ***********'s effects has to do with the inhibition of protein kinase C activity and its dependent pathways.

In the tests on mice, the researchers found that *********** treatment increased survival by 40% in treated mice, compared with mice that received a placebo. The level of virus found in the lungs 6 days after infection was 98% lower in treated mice than in the placebo group.

"We have shown that RV [***********], a natural polyphenol whose concentration in red wine is 1.5-3.0 mg/L, can inhibit the in vitro and in vivo replication of influenza A virus without producing any significant toxicity," the article states.

The apparent ability of *********** to block host-cell functions that flu viruses rely on offers important advantages, the researchers say. Compared with existing anti-flu drugs, *********** would be less likely to induce resistance by flu viruses, and it would probably be effective for all types and strains of flu virus.

"For these reasons, RV merits further investigation as a potential weapon for combating the growing threat of influenza," the authors conclude.

I could get behind this! I'm preventing the flu, not a lush! :thumbsup2

My family and I had a similar problem, and because we love Disney so much, we may have gone a little overboard... ;) but it worked!
It all starts at the airport. Seriously- you're more at risk there than anywhere else. Keep hand sanitizer, wipes, and Lysol on you at all times. When you/your family are using the restrooms, tell your kids not to touch the door handles. There are more germs there than anywhere else. Just use your sleeve to open/close the door. Before you get into your plane seats, wipe down all the surfaces with your wipes. They may look clean, but probably are not.
Upon arriving to the hotel, DO NOT SLEEP WITH THE COMFORTER. Seriously. It's really gross. Stick with the sheets, those are washed and changed regularly. My mom would always bring rubber gloves during flu season and wear them going into the room for the first time. She'd then Lysol EVERYTHING and take the comforters off the bed. (We're not crazy, we just love Disney!) that should be good for the hotel rooms.
At the parks, follow the same restroom precautions there as in the airport. I know sitting on the rides there's undoubtedly going to be germs, but wipe down everything you can without getting strange looks! :)
This seems a little crazy, but we didn't get sick!
Good luck, have a great trip!

I always Lysol the hotel room before I let my daughter enter the room.

Not sure who is conflicted? The major experts such as CDC and WHO are reporting that this year's vaccine is a great match, as it includes 3 of the 4 strains that are present at this time. I have not read anywhere that this year's vaccine is one of least effective at all. In fact, everything I have read says the exact opposite.

You need to remember that there are many other influenza like illnesses that are present for which the vaccine will not be effective.

Yup. As I stated above, this year's vaccine contains 3 of the 4 strains currently circulating.

Effectiveness on a widespread average is about 60% as reported by the CDC.

:thumbsup2

Thanks to those who are reminding people that flu is a respiratory illness, and not a stomach illness. The whole misnomer of stomach flu drives me batty and is one of my biggest pet peeves!

Good health to all, Tiger

It could be that the flu in the pp's area is not being prevented by the flu shot.
As far as the CDC and WHO, I take their reports not with grain of salt but with a salt lick.

Here is an article that explains it.

http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/cidrap/content/influenza/general/news/may3105***********.html

I live by this and have not had the flu in over 12 years.

It did the same thing when I pasted the article.

I don't know what the link is but if we feel the slightest little tickle or sneeze, we begin taking 1/8 tsp of powdered Vitamin C in a glass of water throughout the day for a few days. If we take too much, we get a little diarrhea so we cut back. None of my children nor my husband and me has ever had the flu. In fact, now that I'm thinking about it, we haven't had colds either since we started this regimen about 15 years ago.

I lick all the door handles to build up immunity to germs: and eat Dirt..ok not really but too much sanitizers Are not good.cant build up any immunity to any sickness.

That's interesting. Thanks for posting.

I know I'm thinking nine months ahead, but...

We'll be in Orlando starting October 27. I get my flu shot at work, and that's usually around the second week in October. I could get my flu shot at the doctor's office, but I'd have to pay the co-pay. When is the latest I should get my flu shot?

Yes, this. Got a horrible stomach bug at WDW once and then we started cleaning the room before we went in and it never happened again. Dont forget the remote control!!

You can certainly get it earlier than October, if available to you. We got our first shipment in mid-August this year. You would be covered the entire 2013-14 flu season. Certainly, getting it by Thanksgiving is optimal as it usually shows up in my area sometime in December. We did more flu shots the first 10 days January than in all of December as people flooded in once they heard the outbreak. Obviously, it real late now but you know what they say, better late than never, especially this year.

It takes roughly 2 weeks to build up the immunity.

I don't know how things are with people in the parks, however I have heard that there are a lot of people in the area sick.

I am having surgery on Tuesday. I went to the hospital to do my advance registration on Friday. I was told by the nurse that they had run out of the swabs required to test for the flu. They thought they had enough for the entire season, but are already out. That was at Dr. Phillips Hospital.

My surgeon told me to stay away from public places until after my surgery. He said that, if I had to go some place, to wear a mask. I am just avoiding going out for the most part. I did have my flu shot.

I do know of a couple of CMs who work with my sister who have had the flu. My sister had her flu shot and has not gotten sick. They work backstage in the office area of AK.

One man I know cut his hand and had to go to the ER last week. He waited three hours in Celebration Hospital's ER to be treated due to the number of people in with some sort of sickness. Celebration Hospital tends to get most of the sick who visit WDW.

So, OP, it does appear that the flu is a problem here. However, if you had your flu shot and you are careful about washing your hands, it sounds like you may be okay.

I came down with the flu while at Disney and still have it. Fortunately no one else in the family caught it, lucky me! I swear Disney is cursed for me. I come home with the flu every time we go!

The flu is everywhere. We see each time we go that people still go to the parks sick and will drag their sick kids to the parks. The nest thing you can do is wash your hands often, don't touch handrails and then your face and maybe even ask your doctor for an rx of tamiful or something just in case.
