FLL airport - Shooting today at 1 pm - 9 wounded

Keeping in mind that there's always a lot of confusion and misinformation during the first few hours after any incident like this, I generally find the Reddit live feeds to be a good source of news:

I remember when we had a shooting incident on Parliment Hill, in Ottawa. There was widespread confusion based on misinterpreted sightings of armed security personnel and also misidentified noise from local construction projects, leading to the mainstream media reporting for hours that there were multiple shooters when, in fact, there was just one. CNews was the worst, failing to update for most of the day, even after other news outlets had come around to acknowledging that there appeared to be just one perpetrator.

We'll know better by tomorrow what really happened today. In the meantime, my thoughts and prayers go with everyone directly or indirectly affected by this.

Just for further help if you can't get them on a flight out of JFK then Jetblue also goes from La Guardia and Newark to West Palm. In an situation like this Jetblue often will allow you to switch to another air port if needed in NYC.

That I was aware of. Their original flight was out of JFK, but I'll have the EWR/LGA flights handy as well to West Palm when I call. Thanks!!

My BIL is there now (in a plane being held indefinitely on the tarmac) far away from the shooting but terrifying. I didn't know he was flying today (heck, I didn't know there was a shooting) until I got a frantic phone call from MIL that she can't contact him. He checked in on facebook about 15 minutes later. All is well.

Thank goodness he's safe. My brother said he was in that same terminal at the same time of day one week ago.

I imagine things are very hectic right now. Especially with reporters who are reporting anything and everything before it is confirmed as linked. I just saw a news station showing a guy being lead off in hand cuffs but continuously saying we have no clue if this is connected as in a 2nd shooter or if this guy just so happened to get arrested at the airport right now. It adds to the hysteria. I get wanting to give information asap but I also would like to know the information is correct. We are in a world of report first and fact check later which opens up a can of worms.

Shooter was wearing a Star Wars shirt.

Watching news Live there is a lot of chaos, understandably. Large groups of people hiding behind cars and planes, some running wildly and others being led out single file to what looks like runways or service roads.

Praying for all those affected.

Glad he is okay.

You are not the media.

Thanks.

Right now, I'm just wondering what business Senator Nelson has giving interviews about this on cable TV, and releasing names to the media, and so forth. :confused3 I'd think that would be law enforcement's job, not his.

I'm also SMH at the people who are being told to get on the ground by police who instead are filming and calling into news stations. I just could never imagine my first instinct in a situation like this to be film and call about it.

As I've never been in a situation like this (closest was a possibly-armed bank robbery), I can't say what I'd do.

Though, in that circumstance, I just shoved my summer's pay (about 1000 in cash) up the sleeve of my shirt and watched things play out with keen interest and a surprising amount of detachment. This was back in the 80's, so no cell phone.

There is a pretty horrific video of inside the baggage claim that someone got moments after with multiple injured and people on the ground on Instagram. I don't know if I should link to it here, but if you want to see it you can go to Instagram and type #ftlauderdale in the search. Just as a warning, the video is very disturbing.

Very sad. Airports are perfect soft targets for idiots with guns who want to do harm. And, there is frankly no way to stop this. If you move to "screening" outside the airport somewhere, all you've done is moved the target. Anytime you have large groups of people gathering, you've created targets for mad men (and women, I guess, although this one is, like the vast majority of others, male)

I was evacuated from the Starbucks I worked at due to a suspicious package the day before a 9/11 remembrance ceremony in NYC and I just remember being so terrified that my first instinct was to want to get as far away as quickly as possible and was so pissed about the stupid company policies that added unnecessary minutes to our evacuation and the people who refused to leave so that we could leave when the NYPD and FDNY came in and told everyone to get out.
