FLL airport - Shooting today at 1 pm - 9 wounded

Very sad. Airports are perfect soft targets for idiots with guns who want to do harm. And, there is frankly no way to stop this. If you move to "screening" outside the airport somewhere, all you've done is moved the target. Anytime you have large groups of people gathering, you've created targets for mad men (and women, I guess, although this one is, like the vast majority of others, male)
I've always thought the same thing.

According to the police there us no additional active shooter.

Broward County confirms only 1 shooter 5 dead and 8 injured but suspected in unharmed and in custody. They would not comment on the shooters name, motive, or weapon used in their words the investigation it is too early in the investigation to give out any of that information. The airport is still shut down until it is given the 100% all clear.

It's being reported by AP.. shooter was a passenger on a Canadian flight with a checked gun...claimed bag and loaded it in the bathroom.

I didn't read that but it would be interesting. I have to admit even with my stance on gun ownership I have always felt a little uneasy with people's ability to carry shells and guns in check baggage. If this is the case I imagine the TSA won't allow ammo in check bags any more since the gun is useless with out the ammo.

Yes, I think you're right. However, I don't see the difference between pulling a gun out of a bag and walking into luggage claim with a weapon in a pocket.

Quite a bit of info here:

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/broward/article124963889.html

"The suspected gunman was identified as Esteban Santiago, law enforcement officers told the Miami Herald. He is thought to have been a passenger on a flight from Canada that landed at FLL at around noon with a checked gun in his baggage. After retrieving his bag, he is believed to have gone into the bathroom and loaded the weapon. Then he stepped into the Terminal 2 baggage-claim area and began shooting.

Santiago was carrying some form of military ID. He is suspected of being a former U.S. Army soldier from the New Jersey area."

I agree. I have never understood why security is so lax when entering common areas of airports.
