I'm contemplating going down the first week in Jan but wasn't sure if that was a busy time for DVC and I need to get on the phone and book asap or if I can wait it out a while to make a final decision.

Assuming you are talking about 2010.

You probably have a while, since most schools will probably be back in session on January 4. However, if that first week includes the Marathon, the smaller resorts will fill very quickly as soon as the 7 month window opens.

My advice is to book it when your window opens (unless you need to borrow points) - it's a long time to next January and you can easily cancel without penalty if/when your plans change.

thanks :) I guess I will just go ahead and book. The points are already borrowed into 09UY anyway so no harm either way.

With Jan 1 as a Friday next year, you will still have the huge holiday crowds through Jan 3 and then almost as big Monday Jan 4 and then Tues Jan 5 it will be much lighter (in one day you essentially go from two hour stand-by lines for a number of the popular rides to less than 30 minutes and some to 15 to almost no wait (except Soarin which will still be approaching an hour, which is better than the close to 4 hours it can get during the holiday time). That is the modern pattern, the huge crowds really don't leave until they do so en masse startting late Monday and then on Tuesday. Also, the Marathon weekend adds somewhat to the crowds but it does not really cause huge crowds in the parks and you will still find it fairly easy to do.

As to booking DVC, you should not have a problem as long as calling 11 months out from day of arrival.
