Greetings...

My parents and I were at EPCOT on June 2, 2002, and we stayed for the IllumiNations fireworks display. i love this display a lot, especially the final torch rising and lighting from the Earth Globe. On this particular night, however, the torch didn't light and no fireworks were shot from it. Does anyone know if this was just a one-time glitch or if the torch has been disabled for the 100 Years of Magic celebration or if it had been taken out completely because it had no relevancy anymore? I've been wondering about this for quite a while and thought it was time I would ask you guys your insight.

One time glitch. (Well ... it's probably not the first and only time it's happened, but it's definitely the exception, not the rule! :D )

All of the fire and fireworks components of the show are computerized, and if that glitches, so too do those elements. It could have also been a factor of wind, though. If it was gusty that night, that could have "turned them off" too.

I don't remember it being gusty that night, so I'm taking your word that it was a computer glitch...thanks...

I think I remember a CM who works at Epcot posting here shortly after that (I remember it because we also went in June 2002) asking about such things-it seems they had bought some cheaper fireworks around then, and a lot of them were misfiring, not going off, etc. He wondered if any one had experienced the problem. Maybe your experience is related to that?

Maybe, but if I know Rozzi Fireworks (the supplier of WDW's fireworks), the quality of the fireworks would be very high, but if that CM said they were having problems, then I guess it is possible that EPCOT got a bad shipment that day/week from Rozzi's (it is known up here in the Northern KY, Greater Cincinnati area that our own Rozzi Fireworks supply WDW with their fireworks; there've been TV specials about it). I guess anything's possible with fireworks these days.

The post to which you are referring was quite speculative in nature. There are several contingency plans for each show, and some elements depend on sensors (there could have been a slight discrepency in the positioning of one of the elements.) I'm sure that you experienced a random glitch.

Nellas Elensar,
we were there during that period last year. there were a couple of rainy days too, maybe some of the fireworks could have been damaged? probably just a one time glitch. I have an aunt that lives in Covington, probably pretty close to you?

Kevin,

Yes, Covington is really close to where I live. About a few miles north, I think. As for the fireworks, it's possible that some of them were damaged by the rain. I'm not ruling anything out right now.
