FF Southwest ticket - what to do with it now?

I have a frequent flyer Southwest ticket that we had planned on using in Nov. Well, I actually got some great rates on USAir & I think we are going to use them. Unless we book another trip (which probably won't happen ) I will have this Southwest ticket that expires in a year.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of it. Has anyone sold a FF ticket they have not used? Did you sell it in the newspaper, EBay, anywhere else? I know this is probably a dumb question, but I hate to see the ticket go to waste & I have never had this situation before.

Selling these vouchers is against the rules, and thye will not be honored if you get caught.

You CAN donate it to charity (Make a Wish for example) and take a tax write off for it.

Southwest's Rapid Rewards award certificates are fully transferrable, unlike frequent flyer awards issued by other airlines.

I just looked at the rules, and it says you can "give it to a friend." However, the rules prohibit selling or bartering the award.

So find a friend who can use it, or donate it.

I'm not advising you to break the rules, but these SWA rapid reward vouchers are sold all the time. I work for a major oil company and our employees do most of their flying on SWA. As you can guess, there are many rapid rewards vouchers being earned. So many that our company intranet website has a message board specifically for people looking to buy and sell these vouchers.

It's basically the same principal as renting DVC points. Disney says not to do it, but there is a demand for rented points anyway. Where there is a demand there will always be a market.

I guess it comes down to your personal preferences. If you want to follow the letter of the law, then the voucher should not be sold for profit. However, everyone else is doing it and there certainly is market for it.

While they are sold all the time, you take the risk. If SW discovers you have sold the ticket you will be "kicked out" of their program and the person holding the ticket will discover the ticket is not being honored.
I find it hard to believe you company endorses this considering they probably get a discount or refund from SW that could be jeoporadized.

This is such a silly game - look at ebay you will see these for sale all teh time.

Or others sell and envelope that just happens to contain 2 tickets.

Most times when sold on ebay..the tickets are free..and people sell the coupons for drinks..for the price of the tickets. I pm'd you.

it was mentioned once....do not know it is is true

but you can also call SW and they will extend the "FF" for a reasonable fee....something like 35$ or so....

might be worth a phone call to find out...

I'd be interested to know if SW will extend the date for a fee. I didn't think they'd do that.
I was in the same situation a few years ago, so I gave it to my neighbor. She takes my mail in, watches my house and shovels my driveway when we go away.

My husband had reservations on SWA 9/12/01 using a rewards ticket. The ticket expired sometime in October (of 2001) We paid a $35.00 fee and were allowed to extend the ticket for an additional 12 months.

I was given the impression that the extension was only allowed because of the circumstances - but, I guess it wouldn't hurt to call and ask.

Funny you should mention that. I did post in another thread that I had this ticket & may not be able to use it. I have a SIL with family in Albuquerque, NM, & she doesn't get to see them a lot.

I thought she might be able to use it. I guess we'll see what happens.
