Would a 4 inch Feather bed topper help the sleeping comfort of a sleeper couch? Trying to think of some way to make a sleeper couch more comfortable to some of my older kids who are visiting for a few days during the holidays.

I have no experience with a feather bed topper but I found them on Amazon.

Is it possible to just take the mattress off the spring-thing and put it on the floor? After a while with our sofabed - we found that to be more comfortable.

Sorry - I can't answer the question about the feather bed topper.

I've had a feather topper and a memory foam one. Memory foam wins hands down for me. I think it would help with the support bars and any sagging of a sofa sleeper. The feather topper also made some people too hot. Some have the same complaint about memory foam, but I think the new foams have fixed that problem.

Feather bed sounds luxurious but actually is a) hot, and b) super-prickley unless it's inside a VERY sturdy cover. Go for some type of foam. ::yes::

Yeah, the problem I have always had with sofa beds and such is lack of support more than softness. The springs are not sturdy so you feel all the support wires.

I think if you are planning to spend money, what about an inflatable bed?

My experience with larger then single inflatable beds is as bad as the comfort level of sofa beds.

Costco has some 2.5 inch memory foam pads that are really nice. I bought these for my kids dorm beds and they love them! Just make sure if you buy a foam bed that you allow it to air out for a few days before using it. They tend to have a factory odor that needs to breath out.

::yes:: Me too. I have bought two 4" memory foam toppers over the years from this guy on eBay below. I have it on my convertible futon couch that I use every night. It works great even on a cheap futon mattress. I couldn't get an orthopedic futon with springs as they do not fold. And I need my futon to turn into a couch for daytime.

Make sure you get a 4 or 5 lb density. Anything less is too squishy and gives no support. Pillows are usually 3 lb density or less. The 5 lb density is what the Tempurpedic memory foam mattresses are made out of. But, I've seen too many reviews that say they are actually too hard. I like the 4 lb density.

I also have a quilted mattress pad on top of my memory foam topper. It is thick enough that I do not have problems with the heat build up others complain about with the memory foam pads.

I have also bought a memory foam topper from Overstock.com. They have free shipping right now.

YEs, but a memory foam topper would be more comfortable.

I've had a feather bed. I used about a year before I tossed it, it just wasn't comfortable like I thought it would be.

I also found it much more comfortable to take the mattress off the bed fold bed back up an sleep with the mattress on the floor.

My mattress was way too firm for me so I bought a memory foam topper for it and it is very comfortable. I am so glad my MIL suggested it to me otherwise I would have been buying a new mattress.

I think it would work really well on a sofa bed.

DH was deployed to Afghanistan last year. The bed he received there was the pits. Mattress used by who knows how many guys. :sad2:

I shipped him a 2" (?) memory foam topper I got on sale at Sears. The box is not large because they wrap those things up really tight & compress.) He LOVED it. Passed it to another guy when he came home. One of the very few bedding items he did not burn before he left.

Memory foam Topper & fleece comforter/blanket .....2 things he loved that I sent. Wanted him to sleep as good as he could under the situation. :goodvibes

I would have bought him a thicker one, but had to consider the size of the box & shipping it to him overseas.

I guess my experience was memory foam was less then positive so that's why I was asking about feather bed.

Also, feather bed might be easier to store over a memory foam topper. It's not like I could leave the topper on the sofa bed.

Laying the sofa mattress on the floor is not a really good option as this on a concert basement floor.

Thanks for all the thoughts.

Are you sure you had memory foam and not regular foam rubber? Every single person on this thread unanimously said they prefer the memory foam to a feather bed.

Another vote for a memory foam mattress topper, I have slept on both and found the feather bed to be too warm, prickly and not comfortable. I sleep on my memory foam 4 inch topper every night and sleep so much better, I can only imagine how much it would help someone sleep on a sofa bed.

Nope it was

I was trying to make a extra firm mattress sleepable. I have soft tissue damage from a hip replacement. Unfortunately it didn't help enough to make it worth having my side of the bed 3 inches higher then hubby. Mattress was perfect for him but the worst for me and my condition. I haven't found ANY suitable solution for my bed and my injuries....except I now sleep on the guest bed.

Though I may consider trying it again for the sleeper sofa.

That mattress pad doesn't state the density of the foam. I said in my last post what the density should be.

You sound determined to try a feather bed. As I recall, you need to get one with quilted pockets, or one that has the feathers enclosed in squares. As I recall, I got one that didn't have them and by morning all the feathers pushed off to the sides, creating a nest all around me and the few feathers left basically matt down under my weight and giving no support. A feather bed sounds good - in theory. Nice & puffy to lay down in. Nice & puffy in the morning - in all the places you aren't laying on. Matted down underneath where you are. You have to re-fluff it every morning.

I have a bad back. It didn't help at all. I used to have to take a scalding hot shower for about 35 minutes every morning just to stand up straight and relax the back muscles out enough. That all changed when I got my memory foam topper.

And yes, it makes a difference which company you buy one from. Some of them are extremely pokey. Quills are the sharp spines on feathers. You know, the things they used to use to write with. You don't want them poking into you.

But, I suppose everyone needs to experience a feather bed at least once. That's probably what keeps them in business. That and the fact that they look so plump & inviting in pictures. I think they are more for people who don't have injuries & problems.

I guess you didn't read the last line I wrote - I may consider trying it again for the sleep sofa. I definitely am not determined to get a feather bed. I just was stating my experience.

I did see that the density of the one I bought was only 3..which may have been the reason I had issues.
