Not being able to get the Virtual Line sucks!!
During preview, it is said that VL are released 11AM, 3PM, 6PM. But very few for 11AM, and time window varies for 3PM and 6PM (e.g. 3:00-3:05, 6:00-6:20, sometimes 8:20). There are all sorts of techniques to use to reduce half a second to increase the chance. But why is it so hard?
I have done some simple math for the capacity of Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry.
Assuming it runs at full capacity (no down time, no broken seats), 500 passengers can ride per hour if they launch every 3-ish minutes (2 "elevators" at a time, 14 passengers each).
(As a comparison, Guardians of the Galaxy sends 20 people every 65-ish second after running for 3 years. Also, that is two passengers per row lined up next to the gate with lap bar, versus the Tower-of-Terror-like "elevator" with two gates and over-the-lap right-to-left seat belt.)
But the reality is that it doesn't open in the morning during preview. It runs max 6-7 hours now. It does have broken seats. It does have down time. If the ride breaks down it the middle, the passengers will ride again.
I think waiting time is still around an hour in a loose queue. I think the full line can hold thousands of people but I believe it held less than 500 people with many of the side lines closed.
Let's make a conservative estimate that the capacity is 2000-3000 people per day now. But there are 4000-8000 guests per day during preview. A lot more people can ride and are willing to ride as it's not as scary as Hagrid or Tron or GoG. No wonder it's so hard to get the VQ now.
Even if it runs 10 hours per day, no everybody can ride. This is the realistic expectation to have.
