Fear aggressive dogs

It may have been 4 months. I'm not sure, but he did tell me not to walk him or take him where he may be in contact with dogs or dog poop. I was thinking about getting a remote shock collar. If he so much as barks at some one I could zap him as a reinforcement along with firm commands. What do you think?

I don't think a shock collar woudl be a good idea if is fear agression and not dominence or teritorial. I suggest shelling out the $$ to get him evaluated.

Yeah, I just did some internet research and the collars aren't recommended.

Yep....We were even told to not use the pinch collar for a long time. We could use it inside out as a choke collar, and the switch it around once he used to it. I woudl say try a choke collar or one of the head collars and do as I suggested above. However I still think the best idea is to get your dog evaulated by a professional.
Oh and as someone else suggested, a thyriod test. That is next on our list, but our vet recently reitred and i have put forth the effort to find a new one.

I'd definitely agree with the head collar. Our aggressive one is a 95 pound black lab mix. She has an extremely high pain tolerance and she's as strong as a bull. When we put a head collar on her, even the kids were able to handle her on walks (though we never, ever let them walk her by themselves).

I tried the head collar with giz, but it freaked him out

We use pinch collars for training. The most important thing is to make sure that they are fitted correctly. If they are, it delivers a mild pinch and acts like a mother dog would correct the pup. If its incorrect, it could hurt the dog. If you decide to use a pinch collar, there is a website I will see if I can find for you on how to use, and fit the collar.

Good Luck, noone wants a fearful pup.

What did he do, start shaking his head everywhere and squirm around? My dog went nuts the first few times we tried the collar, but she quickly learned that collar = WALK! :woohoo:

barking, clawing at it, rubbing his face on the floor it etc...really freaking out.

LOL...nope, even crating is an issue with him, but we can get him in it. He is getting better about the crate, buts its been a fight. We did start letting him stay out of it at night, but he wasn't sleeping, and then was moody all day LOL. We call him the 80lb toddler. He has tantrums if he isn't rested and fed.
