Fantasy vs titanic

I have never ever complained about attending a muster,as I know it is directly related to the Titanic. When I'm standing there, sure,I'd rather be anywhere else on board, but I remind myself of the people who died,no longer in vain, because we're safer now due to their sacrifice. I just wish the importance was expressed better/kinder by ship staff(it's possible to be serious AND respectful) and taken a tad more seriously by passengers(I'm referring to OTHER cruise lines, not Disney).

even thought you don't need the life jacket i will still take mine just so i can be showen how to properly fasten them. to the op i know what you were feeling about touching a part of titianic. a few years ago at my state fair they had a part of the world trade tower i touched it and it felt all those people that died. Also dose any one know why life jackets were called life belts back in 1912

The first PFD's were more shaped like a belt around rhe tummy and wiast. Later designs became more like vests/over the shoulders.

Being from New York, the World Trade towers were always a landmark. I still drive down to the city on work now and then and still can't help but look at that empty part of the city skyline. I find it amazing when folks flying can wine about the security rules and inspections..........maybe they need to watch the videos of the towers coming down to remind them of the issues involved.

I am a huge Titanic fan (watched ALL the movies tons of times, read about, watch all the special, went to the exhibit when it was here in NY). Things on DCL are VERY different.

Titantic was 46,328 GRT tons and Fantasy is 130,000 GRT .....BIG DIFFERENCE!!

If you ever get the chance, here in Orlando, there is a Titanic Experience on Idrive, near Sand Lake road. You buy a ticket from a booth similar to the ones of the perios, then go to the location. On your ticket, there is a name of a person that was on the Titanic, and they look like the original boarding tickets. From there, at your scheduled "boarding time" your are walked thru the experience, by and actor in period dress for that character. We had a 3 rd class passenger. Youl go thru a bunch of rooms, with artifacts and recreations, and theyll tell the story from the time she was conceived, until her sinking. At the end, theyll show you a board with all of the names of the passengers, and the ones that were lit up, didnt survive. You can match your name to the list. My son got Bruce Ismay. and the person telling the story, will tell you there stage name and if they survived or not. It kind of puts a personal human touch to it.

Titanic was even carrying more lifeboats (20) than legally required - it was only required that she have enough lifeboats for 756 passengers. Titanic was built with the capacity to carry 64 lifeboats, possibly anticipating a change in lifeboat policy.

Interesting that this topic has come up, as my 6th grader is doing a History Fair entry on the Titanic. The theme is Revolution, Reaction Reform. In her (our) research, we have learned that the Titanic tragedy resulted in the SOLAS (Safety of Lives at Sea) Treaty, which in turn led to new Maritime laws.

Muster drills were pretty common in 1912 but several sources we have found say the captain of the Titanic decided to cancel the drill so that passengers could attend church service.

Titanic was capable of taking on more lifeboats but the White Star Line decided it would clutter up the look of the deck. It did not have enough lifeboats and worse (just as in the movie) most lifeboats were not filled to capacity. This is because the crew feared the weight of the lifeboats would be too much for them to be lowered safely, and because many people either did not really believe the ship was sinking or they just did not know where to go, because there had not been a drill.

Basically, we have learned that a huge number of things went wrong that led to the tragedy. A big part of her project is about how the sinking led to reform in sea travel. I cannot imagine skipping the muster drill -- if there were a situation where we needed to get in a lifeboard I definately want to know where to go!

Is skipping the drill allowed? Or do people go and just not pay attention?

Titanic at the time was carrying the legal amount of lifeboats. At the time, the lifeboat requirements were due to the weight of the ship, and not the passenger count. Yes she was designed with more, and even with the original number, I dont think that she would carry enough for all of her passengers.

It is required. There is roll call taken at the drill. I have read that if you don't attend, you get an invite to a private drill (which I would imagine you do NOT want to have to attend).

It's an important session to attend. It is the "what if" that no one wants to think about, but you want to know what to do and where to go in case "what if" happens.

- Dreams

I know of at least 1 board member that missed a muster drill. They posted the letter they got and it basically contained all of the info that was given out at the muster drill. There is no private drill, or a meeting with a ships officer.

This is just me, but I dont think a lot of the crew takes the drills seriously.(Not just DCL but other lines also) for me, I wnat to know if the ship is sinking, and I need to get onto/into a lifeboat, that there is a serious issue, and that the party is not continuing in a smaller setting. Ive been on at least 1 cruise where the drill was more of a party then an information session. When youre at sea, and the Capt says ships sinking, get into the lifeboats, thats not the time to say If I only.......

Actually, someone sent me info about this. By international law, the muster drill must take place within 24 hours of departure.

The rumor was that Titanic could float with upto 4 compartments flooded. Her problem was the iceberg damaged hull plating in 5 compartments. The weight of the additional water in the 5th compartment pulled the top of the watertight bulkheads below the waterline. Her watertight bulkheads only went as high as E deck, so once the water cleared those it could flood the entire ship.

There is/was more then a few different shows, that investigated the sinking of the Titanic. Each time she is dove/dived on, something else is learned. One of the last trips, it was found that when she struck the iceberg, she glanced it, and put numerous holes in her sides, as well as her bottom. Not just 1 big one as orginally thought. At least 2 full sections of her bottom, (from the middle section of the ship, near her break apart point)from side to side, were found almost a mile from her final resting postion. Also found in that debris trail was coal, presumably from one of the boiler rooms, or a sorage bunker.

From some of the other info that was gathered, it was learned that early on at least 1 boiler room was flooding almost immediately. And it only got worse from there.

We were able to go to one of the traveling Titanic Experiences when it was actually in the Queen Mary in Long Beach. They held it way below decks in a part of the ship that doesn't get used much. They also had the passenger names on the ticket that you could follow and check the roster at the end. It was very sobering and kind of creepy to be below the water line looking at all the artifacts. Very cool experience...

The other sad fact is that if Mr Mudock had not managed to partially steer around the berg, she would have hit head on and done serious damage to the bow and 1 and 2 compartments. She would have floated and been able to be towed in.

Hey Bud.

I remember seeing that. Along with a 20/20 hindsight that her rudder was too small for her size, not much was known about icebergs. It was thought that what you see is what was there. No one thought that the iceberg could extend out sideways underwater.

6 small gashes as opposed to 1 large hole...

I still cry, every time I watch the movie (Titanic). If, DH or DGK complain about the drill? I become Eeyore and remind them of the Titanic. ;)

Hey there!

Yes there was not much understood about the way icebergs melted, IE the shelving underwater.

All the sisters are now considered to have undersized rudders. When you review these accidents and designs of 100 years ago. I always try to reember the conditions, materials and standards of the day!

BTW........reading about the Titanic Exprience has me wanting to head down your way!

Oh it has been a long time since I have see the Andrea Doria's name! I became obsessed with all things Titanic in 3rd grade and after that, was very into shipwrecks. The book about the Andrea Doria was my second obsession!!!

I first become intreasted in the titianic back in i belive it was 1978 or 1987 when cbs aired a two part tv movie. It wasn't verry factual. I have also seen the movie that Barbra Standwick played in. I also find it intresting that disney's classic ships are biger than Titanic. When passngers set sail i hope that they remmeber why safety drills are held. Perhaps many more passngers could have been saved

The best of the movies IMO is the 1956 *A night to remember*,, maybe not the most accurrate, but a good movie!

Camerons without question has the best effects.

To put the ship size in a bit of perspective........the Magic class is the size of 2 WWII aircraft carriers and the Dream class is the size of 3 WWII aircraft carriers.

It you had a mock up of the Titanic next to the Fantasy........she would look really really small!

Did you know the STOCKHOLM is still in service?.I don't remember what name she is under now..its been changed about 6 times and they have over biult her with additional superstructure..........but shes in service!

there is not much left of the ?Andra Doria on the bottom now, the superstructure and hull is collapsing into it self. I dont beleive there is much ability anymore for Divers to climb into her at this point!

I agree. Back then, it was a lot of trial and error. There were early indications that her rudder was too small, but what may have been a compensating fator was that a lot of capts were ship handlers and used the engines to compensate for the lack of rudder. I can think of at least 2 instances where the Titanic almost collided with another ship before she left on her first and last trip. At least 1 of the times, the capt used one of the outboard engines to push a ship away that had broken loose from her mooring and drifted dangerously close to the Titanic.

Ive done the Titanic experience once, and plan on doing it again. Theres an exact replica of the grand staircase in the bldg,(its used for weddings) and I just heard today that they are adding a piece of the Titanic itself, to the tour, and it will require being lowered into the bldg from above.
