Fantasy/Dream tips for Plus Size Cruisers (you know who you are) :)

That 0 gravity bed... was it clothed or non clothed? LOL sorry.

I also wondered about the dining rooms, the pictures make it look like the tables are so close together and I am worried that with my larger shaped body in one of the chairs I will block the table behind or the isle. Any comments?

The tables are close together... The only place I really felt awkward was Royal Table. I suppose you could request a table against the wall if you were really concerned about it, but I don't think it was bad. The chairs in Animators don't have arms, but about 1/3 of the ones in Royal Table do - so I would say definitely request a chair without arms.

Unclothed... :) They give you "disposable" underwear, but seriously it was for someone who was a size 8 (not me.) I just draped a towel strategically where it needed to be and it was fine. They then painted seaweed mud on me and then wrapped me in a cocoon over the flotation bed. It was modesty all the way even though non-clothed. HTH

we are also interested in riding the aquaduck but wondering what kind of tolerance other cruisers have for those of us who are pooh sized? do you get filthy looks from others for daring to be out without a muu muu? i am around a 22/24 but have experienced some size-ist comments and slurs before and really don't want my vacation ruined by it :(

I would never give looks, and don't remember seeing or hearing anything like that on the ship either! Good for you, going up stairs and on slides and into the pool to horse around IS EXERCISE so their mockery would not only be rude, it would be way off base! :thumbsup2

I was once solely into the swimdress... however the fine ladies at a local Catherines store turned me onto the tankini. LOVE IT! I haven't been in a swimdress in quite some time... You can get a nice top and a skort, and some are even more flattering than a swimdress (not to mention MUCH easier to navigate in the bathroom!) I am sold. The only places I will buy swimdresses, though is Catherines or Lands End. HTH :) :) :)

I teach water aerobics and have many different size ladies in my class. IMHO the very best swimwear for all sizes--up to 4X--is from H2O Wear. They have a large number of styles including one piece, separates, and even unitards (one piece suits that cover the thighs). Many styles offer great support if you need it. They are expensive, but best of all, the suits are well lined fully in the front and back and really resist chlorine. I have about six of their suits that I rotate when teaching my classes in our heavily chlorinated indoor pool and two of them are over six years old and look almost brand new. I wouldn't buy any other brand...

thank you so much for these tips. i cannot wait to get on our cruise and do all the things we want to do...

we are planning the chacchoben ruins tour on our western fantasy cruise and we also really want to try palo/remy and the aquaduck etc. i was a little concerned about the seats in the theatres, aquaduck and the seating in the restaurants etc but this has put some of these to rest...

also.. just bought an exercise bike so hoping to lose some inches before our trips... we have just on 165 days to go :)

We just got off the Fantasy today after a wonderful week-long trip in ocean bliss! This was our third DCL cruise and I have noticed that they just keep getting better and better!

It occurred to me yesterday that it might be helpful to other plus size passengers (like myself) if I passed on a couple tips that I discovered during the week. Sometimes it helps to be prepared with these kinds of things.... :)

1. If you plan on using the spa, bring your own white robe if you care about "fitting in." It's funny, because I have been to many spas in the southeast (Ritz Carlton Reynolds Plantation, Grove Park Inn, Chateau Elan, and they ALL have plus size robes. However, neither Disney nor DCL has plus size robes. It's like - they expect all spa folks to be skinny doodle. I have complained about this for years.

2. Consider booking a room near the forward elevators. We were in 5546 which was AMAZING. It had an extended balcony which fit 4 comfortably, and you could easily watch the fireworks from the extended balcony. It also had 4 chairs, two of which were the half reclining loungers. We were always able to get an elevator quickly (which cannot be said about the midship or even aft elevators.)

3. The other reason to be near the forward elevators is the adult area. You can easily catch the elevators up to the spa to take a shower in the spa changing/locker room - a MUCH better experience than the cabin bathroom (that was fine, but there is much more space, and a much more enjoyable experience in the locker room bathrooms - I had read about this tip many times before, but I had never done it. This cruise, I took a shower there once during the trip, but it was GREAT! Due to our room placement, it was incredibly simple and quick as well.)

4. Try to take a towel or two from the spa to use in your cabin. MUCH larger than the towels in the cabin, and also much more enjoyable.

5. Request that your table in Royal Palace doesn't have chairs with arms. While you are at it, request a table with a view! :)

6. Request to not be placed at one of the circular tables at Enchanted. We had a circular table, and it was fine - but this might be something to consider. After the third night, I was a little tired of having to do the scoot thing. (Also see #5 about requesting a table with a view.) ;)

7. Walt Disney Theatre seating - The very last row has individual chairs, however the theatre seats in the back slanted part of the theatre have surprisingly low legroom and surprisingly small hip room. The last row also has compromised view. The best place to be is on the floor of the theatre, in about the first five rows. I have seen some families sit in individual chairs in the side balconies - if you can figure out how to do that, I would say that would be an excellent place as well.

8. Strongly consider getting at least one days pass to the Rainforest room! It is really amazing.

9. If you can book a service using the 0 gravity flotation bed - it seriously is fantastic as well.

Hope you enjoyed my tips and ideas - and I hope they help to make your cruise a more enjoyable experience. We can't wait to go again!

Best,

Leslie Ann

Thank you!!! I'm also VERY plus size (30/32) :sad1: and always worry about things that other people might take for granted. I've been on 5 cruises so far with 4 different cruise lines and I've noticed that things are different on all ships. With that said, my biggest concern is always arms on the chairs, since my hips/butt/legs is where I carry most of my weight. What about the chairs in the buffet area? I know some cruises that I've been on, the only ones they had, had arms on them and they were SMALL. Along with their bench seats. It was so damn uncomfortable. And you did mention to request armless chairs in Encharted Garden and Royal Palace. What about Animators Palette and Palo? How are those chairs?

As far as being in a bathing suit, I LOATHE being in one and the only place I really wear one is when we're at a beach on the island. I don't do the pools on the ship because they are so crowded. And it takes all I have to take off that cover up and go in the water but with age (just turned 41 this weekend) I've come to terms with who I am and that nobody's comment or look will ruin my damn vacation. It's hot in the Caribbean and I'll be damned if I'm going to sit in a chair, sweating my a$$ off on the beach and watch everyone else cooling off in the gorgeous water. So don't worry what others think, just go out there and ENJOY you're vacaation!!!!

There is no maximum weight for the aquaduck and from past experience on tube rides the heavier you are the faster you go which makes the aquaduck that much more exciting.

exactly, so be careful on the first loop around that goes over the side of the ship. if you lean the wrong way you can flip over. my hubby, whom i call Baloo sized (big and tall),hates tube rides because has this fear of going too high up the side of the wall and flipping out of the tube. well i convinced him to do the Aquaduck and i swear it became a self fulfilling prophesy. he either didn't lean at all or leaned the wrong way and yep! flipped out and they had to stop the ride for him to walk out. so just keep that in mind if you're not used to tube rides.

i don't think it had too much to do with his size as his father who is the same height and shape (just weighs a little less) managed it without any issue. its all down to technique managing that extra speed :) and i wouldn't consider it a thrill ride, so even if you don't generally do tube rides you should still be ok. i don't want to scar anyone off, just give something to consider.

as far as I remember from the Dream, there was a pretty even mix of armed and armless chairs in all dining rooms. I didn't do Palo or Remy but I would assume the same there. we had no trouble finding tables with armless chairs available in the buffet and from looking around the dining rooms they seemed to have set up a lot of the tables in mixed configurations. in fact, in Enchanted Garden, all the tables around us had 3 armless and 1 armed chair so i started to think it was a "look" they were going for :) but then i found other tables with 3 armed and 1 armless and other configurations. i thought they did an excellent job of stocking the ship chairs with the most flexibility.

given how Pooh/Baloo size friendly the parks are I wouldn't have expected anything less.

though i thought the arms on the Enchanted garden chairs were a little low. i'm very hippy and that's the only one i can even remember even though i know i sat in armed chairs everywhere. it wasn't unduly uncomfortable for me, but because I actually remember it there must have been something about it :)

I second the tankini motion...if only because I am very well endowed up top, but have managed to get down from a 24 to a 14 in waist. And, as an added extra, the swim skirts from Avenue have this powernet stuff, sucks your belly in for you!

I have been partial to the swim skirt coverup. It does not have a 'crotch' and slides up over a one piece. I have found that tankinis ride up on me and its not a pretty sight!!!

I am glad this thread is pooh-friendly. I read a post earlier today that said the 'ugly' for someone's cruise was too many obese people. <sigh>

I have a problem with tankinis because I am tall. For years I have worn a one piece from Woman Within with matching shorts over it. I do not want my stomach to accidentally show.

Last year I found a tankini at the Lane Bryant outlet at the Orlando outlet mall. It is longer than the other ones. They usually have several to chose from and a couple are longer and a couple are short. I went back this year and got my new one in Feb. or March to be sure they had my size!

I have been one happy girl because it is so much easier to use the tankini than a one piece!

This information is great, but it is primarily about the newer Disney ship. What about the seating on the Disney Magic? I am booked for this fall out of Galveston, but I have been back and forth about cancelling because of concern regarding the seating in the showroom and theater. I know that it is armed and I put much of my weight in my hips and legs.

Any Magic specific information is greatly appreciated.

Lesa

I am tall 5'10 and wear a 22 or 24 and I fit in the seats fine. I am obviously big all over but most of my weight is in my stomach. I did see people with bigger bottoms and hips than me and they were sitting down!

Holy cow, I definitely would not cancel a cruise over concerns of seating in the show room and theatre....!

We went on the Wonder and I was about the same size as I am now (very good sized 3x), and I can say that I don't recall being terribly uncomfortable in the shows. It's like anything else - if you are very concerned, seek out a row reserved for handicapped, look for the "loose chairs" that may be in the back row or consider skipping the show.

We have never watched a movie on a cruise, and we likely never will... so many more things to do! So, I cannot comment on the movie theatre seating.

I *can* tell you that the chairs at the Beach Blanket Buffet (wonder) had arms and were very generously sized. If you have ever been to Disney and ate in any of the patio areas near the resorts, you will note that those chairs are also generously sized as well. I never had any issues in any of the seating on the Wonder.

With the Wonder, I had the impression that the tables were spaced a bit farther apart, meaning there was more room. I definitely felt more "pressed in" on the newer ships.

If you go (which I really hope you do) I look forward to hearing your report.

I don't know if they still have them, but I know that years ago Land's End used to carry swim suits in tall sizes for longer torsos. I know I ordered some tankinis from them at the time because I wanted to make sure they were long enough.

For the record, I asked for a larger robe at the spa on the Fantasy and they brought it to me (I think it was a men's robe, honestly. It was not white but more of an ecru color. But it fit nicely, especially since I am also very tall.)

As for the seats at the theatre, the armrest made it difficult for me to sit straight down, but I was able to slide back into the seat easily in order to not bruise my hips. For the record, I am about a size 20/22 with very ample hips.

Oh, and I rode the Aquaduck a couple of times and agree with the previous poster who stated that when there was no line, the walk up was a bit challenging. I also didn't love the "butt first" position they ask you to use to get seated in the inflatable "raft." I really don't understand why that particular position was necessary. :confused3

Dunnhorn, Can I ask what you paid to have the spa treatment in the zero gravity chair? Also did you lose inches with the seeweed wrap? I thought I recalled hearing somewhere that that was its claim to fame?:confused3

And my nightmare is being trapped on the ship with all skinny b*#*s!!

We went on the Dream last April. Lots of fuller figured gals and guys. I agree with the Royal Palace chairs. They were not comfy. Also AP was kind of tight together.

I got my plus sized suit from Women Within. Lots of good styles and they run good promos too.

I am a short 3x 22/24 size "Pooh" and have had no trouble at all fitting into any seating or areas on the Wonder or Magic. And since I discovered the tankini blouson style tops and swim skirts from One Stop Plus I've completely given up my swim dresses. I really do think they're more flattering and easier to get on and off! As for feeling self conscious, I never do on a Disney Cruise or Caribbean beach...Now at a Vegas hotel pool, that's another story.
