Fanny Pack Faux Pas

I can't imagine wearing a backpack in the park. Just the sweaty back factor in that humidity! It sounds really uncomfortable. I carry a backpack purse everyday because it is so convenient, but woulnd't want it in that heat.

Fanny packs are making a small comeback. They are calling them "waistpacks" or "belt packs". I was at a local department store yesterday and saw a whole section of the handbags area devoted to them, and thought of this thread. It's no bandwagon I plan to jump on outside of Disney.

My fanny pack stays in our "Disney bag" until our next trip!!! I have found that a fanny pack is easier to carry than a backpack. That being said, I don't carry it anywhere else!

:earsboy:

I have a fabulous "Eagle Creek" bag that can be a fanny pack or a shoulder bag, with the strap long enough to wear across your body. I wouldn't dream of using it as a fanny pack anywhere except WDW. Yes, I know I look ridiculous but it's perfect ! Park maps fit perfectly in the outside pocket and I have the interior laid out just right, with it holding everything I've found I ever need. I used to carry a bigger bag and it was just miserable; backpacks make my back ache and I can't stand juggling them on rides.

I also use this bag, wearing it across my body, whenever we travel or when we're going on a daytrip because it works so well for me. But, as I said, only in the World will you ever catch me with a fanny pack !

Whenever I see a "fanny pack" I always think of a boyfriend I had for about a year before I married my DH.

He would wear a fanny pack sometimes . I asked him once why a 25 yr old man would wear a fanny pack out in public . He took it off and turned it upside down , there was zipper when he opened it there was his gun !
He is a Secret Service agent
::yes::

I noticed that I will wear things at disney that I would not be caught dead while I am at Disney. I know my friend got a counterfeit Louis Vitton fanny pack at the flea market. It was somthing like 15 but if you clip it together then you can wear it over your shoulder.

 :teeth: Thats funny. That reminds me, one of my Store Managers has a Fanny Pack just like Mine, 7 pockets in all, he loves it.:p ;)

I bought a little purse at a girls' clothing store, Limited Too or Rave Girl. It has just enough space for lipstick, sunglasses and a separate compartment to put credit cards, plus a zippered compartment where I keep cash. It's light and can carry all I need, except the camera which I carry in a separate bag.

When I forget the little bag, I take a fanny pack, which only gets used at WDW, period. And I wear it like a purse, not clipped to my waist.

To be honest, I really do not care what people wear at the parks. I think you need to take what is comfortable for you and forget about what other people think. I believe most people understand the bending of rules when on vacation at the parks; there's too much to worry about to also worry about how you look. Slap on the wacky Mickey ears, pins, fanny packs and anything else that brings a little more magic to your trip!

I carry a fanny pack a WDW AND a backpack, sometimes too.
I've never been a real "fashion conscious" person, so I don't worry what it looks like. If it makes it easier for me, then I'm all for it. I also wear it to the mall sometimes, if I don't have big enough pockets. I HATE carrying a pocketbook.

If I take my reg. & digital cameras to the parks, then I take my backpack, so I can put everything in there (souvenirs, pins, cameras, etc.) to make it easier. I carry the backpack over one shoulder, to avoid the "sweaty back syndrome".

Proud fanny pack wearer!

My 4DD has a Cinderella fanny pack we bought at TMK last trip. She keeps her autograph book, pen, sunglasses and any other odds and ends she picks up (i.e. a pretty leaf for mommy & daddy) in there.

My wife wears a fanny pack everywhere BUT Disney. If WDW checked her fanny pack at the gate, they wouldn't let her in (see the secret service post). ;)

We go as light as possible. Cell phone and money in the pocket, digital camera in the pouch hanging on the belt. That's it. I'm all set.

I just got a "waistpack" -- the sport/hiking kind of design. I think it looks pretty good, and while I bought it specifically for WDW, I have a smaller one that I have used for hiking. I was considering a backpack for both, but I came to the conclusion that a backpack would be too large and heavy to wear all day, and would get really hot sitting against my back. But I still have too much stuff to try and squeeze into just my (and my fiance's) pockets.

I always feel very funny in a fanny pack and have not used one for a very long time. I am a backpack person.

I only wear a fanny pack at Disney - I would never be caught dead with it on a regular basis!! They are so convenient for WDW - everything is right there in front for you to get at easily!

I have fanny packs that I use at the beach, at Disney and occasionally when I don't want to drag my purse somewhere ... I can't stand to wear a backpack ... frequently I just toss them over my shoulder.

I'm sure they look horrible on me, but they sure are handy!

I hope to God this doesn't mean that she takes a gun into the parks?!

My finace and I are still trying to decide what to take. We're normally backpack people when we go on vacation (this will be our first time at WDW), but we don't want to get too sweaty going in August & lugging a bag around. But I don't know if we can disciple ourselves enough to only fit what will fit comfortable in a fanny pack! ;) We'll see...

This thread made me laugh. I, too, only wear a fanny pack at WDW or similar park. I do wonder, though, when the original conception idea (being worn over the fanny(!) revised to wearing it over the belly. I remember being one of the few fanny pack wearers 25 years ago at WDW, and wore it behind, but would swing it to the front when in a crowd or on a ride. Our last trip to Disney had my husband wearing one to carry one camera and sunglasses, my boys wearing one with their autograph books and pens, a couple snacks and a small amount of money so that I wasn't always reaching into mine. Mine held another camera, sunglasses, and all emergency supplies (tylenol, sunscreen, wash n dries, bandaids, etc) Even with all that, it still seems we need a backpack to carry the jackets we need either early am or late evening, and the required ponchos for rain!

From a male perspective, there's little need to wear a pack ordinarily since we 1) have a only a wallet, 2) clothes with pockets and 3) don't carry everything in creation with us everywhere we go.

I wear one at Disney to carry the essentials: camera, extra batteries, extra compact flash cards, pennies and a snack or two.

I don't wear one in real life, not because it's ugly but because I don't feel the need to carry anything that doesn't fit in my pockets.

I'm not surprised at the remarketing of the name...they're very much like the military butt packs but some marketing guru probably figured that 'fanny pack' was a less rude name.

I wonder what they call them in the UK.

No fanny packs for me. I usually buy a WDW tote bag and throw my things into it. I used to worry when the kids were younger and I had to bring bottles, diapers etc. I actually forget to use it our first day of our last trip and looked down at my bag on the bus a realized I had my Louis Vuitton in tow:rolleyes: I thought I would freak out but it was just a bag.

No, no!

Even though we both have our carry permits, there are certain areas that expressly forbid firearms. Disney's one of them & rightfully so. There's a pretty hefty fine involved if you carry a firearm in certain places. In Tennessee, that fine is $2,500 and/or up to 11 months 29 days in jail.

My point was that she DOESN"T wear her fanny pack to WDW.

WHEW! :)

Wear a small backpack or a fanny pack all the time. Purse just gets in the way of my signing. Prefer a small backpack though over the fanny pack. Much nicer looking
