Fanny Pack Faux Pas

I can't get comfortable with the fanny pack.

I have a small backpack that's really lightweight that we take to Disney. I don't carry a lot. But, I do need a brush and my eyeglass case for glasses/sunglasses.

I've read ?somewhere? Brits will think you very rude if you use the term "fanny pack" as it makes an, umm, anatomical reference. Instead they use the term "bum pack".
Yes, I'm just full of useless little bits of information !

Not useless when you consider how many Brits there are in the world, as well as reading these boards. :)

What was the witicism...two cultures seperated by a common language. ;)

I need someone to fill me in on why fanny packs are so "out" and why people won't be caught dead wearing one. I wear one in WDW because it's PERFECT for a day in the parks. In my regular life, I use a purse, but I don't think fanny packs look bad. Do they?? Sometimes (OK, everytime) we go to WDW it takes me few days to get switched back to my purse and I wear the fanny pack IN PUBLIC!! Now, I'm mortified. I just turned 40 and I'm thinking maybe (OK, for sure) I'm not keeping up with the times!!

Just a note:

I never started this thread to hurt anyone's feelings or insult any personal choices regarding their choice to carry a fanny pack or not.

While I shy away from them, I was begining to see how useful one might be in WDW. However, my vanity came first, and wanted to see if others felt the same way.

I say go with whatever works best for you! Besides, I *DID* want to make people laugh a bit :)

Until my DS is old enough not to need an extra set of clothes (like when he's...let's see, his father still needs an extra set...sorry, I digress  ), I will carry a backpack.

Before DS came along, I used to wear a fanny pack and a separate bottle strap at Disney.

I don't use the fanny pack anywhere other than Disney. I also don't wear matching t-shirts with the rest of my extended family anywhere other than Disney either. ;)

For that matter, I don't use my running shoes with regular clothes anywhere other than Disney too.

Park attire trumps all fashion sense!

Who cares what you look like when you're hugging a 6 foot tall mouse anyway?

I use mine whenever I travel. It's small enough I can slip it into my bigger carryon for the plane and doesn't "count" against me. It also reminds me I don't need everything in my regular purse. Besides, who cares what I look like at WDW, nobody came to see me.

I use a fanny pack at WDW and when I go to baseball games. They're easy to deal with and you never have to worry that you left it under your seat.

I only use mine a WDW (or similar type parks) for the freedom of having what I need and having my hands free. DH usually has a small back pack since DDs are still young (one still in diapers).

I do take my purse to WDW, but I usually lock it up in the safe and just take my ID, CC, cash, room key and tickets with me. Plus chapstick, travel pack of kleenex, band aids, sun screen etc. I do not overload, but I have a bunch of stuff in my fanny pack.

Why on earth would anyone worry about what you look like with a fanny pack on when there are people running around WDW with birthday cake hats, bridal veils with ears, top hats with ears, etc, etc.? We are all on a wonderful vacation with several hundred thousand of our closest friends! Right?

That being said, I only wear my fanny pack when visiting the parks. I am a Pooh sized girl and I am sure that I look like a pack mule, but I am there to have a wonderful time just like everyone else. I used to lugg a bag around years ago then I tried the fanny pack that I purchased at Walmart. I love not having to tote around a bag and having my hands free. It makes it much easier getting on the rides, IMHO. Do what works for you! I won't care!

I just bought a Wallet Bagg by Baggallini and it works great.;) Will bring it on my next trip to the World! Its smaller and more effecient than the big clunky Fanny Pak I USED to use!::yes::

lol! gotta admit i don't wear the designer hats either

I just got a really "cute fanny pack" at wal-mart. It has a watter bottle net on the side of it and a clip for the mini mini umbrella that I bought. (it is only 2 1/2 inches tall when it is collapsed) But they didnt have the green. only blue purple and pink and black.

Just thought I'd add a UK point of view!!

Over here we call them 'bum bags' but I am definitely in favour of anything that will make life easier.

Like everyone else has mentioned, I definitely wouldn't wear them under normal circumstances but when have I ever been 'normal' in Disney!!:smooth: :earsgirl:

I carry a little leather knapsack instead of a fanny pack.It carries a camera, cell phone, mints, cash, passes, and odds and ends

....I used it for 3 days. Enough of the packmule look for me!!!! If it doesn't fit in my pockets,it stays in the hotel!

DH and I each have specific fanny packs that we use for WDW. We got them from LL Bean, and they were some of the best purchases ever!

DH's pack has two insulated water bottle holsters. Keeps the water cold, keeps us hydrated. That feature alone paid for the packs on our honeymoon trip.

DH wears his pack when we go on long walks w/ the dogs, but otherwise those packs don't get much use between trips. We leave in 12 days, and I've just cleaned out my UPH's from our last trip! Actually, it's fun - when we're getting ready to take another trip, I clean out my pack and find little memories of last time.

I'm so excited - 12 days to go, and I'm already having trouble sleeping!!

My dh, dd (10) and I all have our own fanny packs. My older dd, 28, thinks we're 'dorks' but she's never been to WDW so her opinion doesn't count!!! I first used a backpack but after 4 days it really started to chafe my shoulders and under my arms. so, we use fanny (bum) packs now. But, I have found that they start bothering my back toward the end of the day. My solution? I wear it as intended...on me bum!! Makes a world of difference. But, then I worried that someone would pick it. Of course I never worried about that with a backpack! I did buy dh a fanny pack with water bottles on either side. Don't know if he will wear it though. We'll have to see. He hates spending the money for bottled water thru the day. I pack my passes (for the whole family), chap stick, and a camera in my pack. Dd has her autograph book/pen in hers. Dh has ponchos and cash in his.

First of all, I think for most of us we are talking about what we would like to wear or carry that fits our personal style--- I don't worry much about anyone else's personal style--- although I think we are definitely due for a reassessment of tight athletic shorts with things written across the butt :p

Trying to figure out what bag to carry at WDW is my biggest angst before the trip, and I have never solved it. I used to carry a huge backpack/diaper bag-- too huge! Kid grew out of diapers. I looked and looked after that for either a "hip-looking" fanny pack or something similarly compact, ergonimically friendly, accessible, etc. Never found it! Used my daugter's mini backpack. Last trip also spent a ton of time searching-- and still, couldn't find anything to meet my standards, and stuck with the mini-backpack.

Now I have another baby so we're back to the diaper/stroller bag, which is kind of a relief. For this trip I'm getting the kind that attaches to the stroller or is a sleek messenger-type bag.

Face it, the "fanny packs" are pretty darn efficient, and none of the alternatives work as well for WDW needs. When I leave the diaper bag phase again, maybe I'll break down and join the fanny pack ranks.
