Family of 5; First Time DDP - At WDW Now!!! 4/1/09 to 4/10/09

on your pecos bill review-- the menu items-- on the dining plan can you get a side of stuff too? what exactly can you have besides a burger and a drink?

On the Pecos menus, if you look at them close, under the burgers etc. it says you can get fries or apple slices - those are your options. As far as dessert goes, you can get yogurt, carrot cake, pudding or a cookie. The other sides you see listed, you must pay OOP, or use a snack credit if you can. I have an example of that from our lunch today.

Loving the reviews...especially the pics. I must admit that I usually don't care for non food pics in reviews but I think your family is so cute that I really am looking forward to more!!! Bring it!!

Thank you for that!! I was hesitant to put them up on the food review, but I have family that is not with us checking in, so I wanted to make it fun for them as well.

I really love your reviews. Your pictures are great. You and your family look like they are having a great time. I have a question about Pecos Bills. My husband wants to know if there is any pickles on their fixins bar?

Yes - Sorry if I missed them in the pictures. DS9 had a bunch on his burger.

All right everyone - I had a few minutes as I was uploading my pictures for the day, and tried to respond to everyone's questions. If I missed yours, feel free to repost or send me a PM. Back to the food!!

So as you all know, we went to AK today, which was a crowded mess. We were getting hungry so we stopped in at a place we had not tried, Flame Tree BBQ. My DW went with the salad with BBQ chicken in it, which came with a small slice of pita bread. She said it was good and there was lots of chicken in it; there underneath the lettuce. She also wanted some onion rings, so I paid OOP for those:

DS9 and DD got the chicken leg with jello and applesauce or carrots. Unlike the kids lunch at Hollywood Studios, Flame Tree gave them 2 chicken legs each vs. 1 each:
P1000536.JPG

DS18 and I both got the ribs. These ribs are not the wet, heavily sauced kind, but more the dry rub kind. If you want sauce, they have it on the side so you can apply accordingly. The beans were good, but had lots of sauce in them - and the cole slaw was good as well, not too much mayo:
P1000537.JPG

And for dessert, the 3 adults all ordered key lime pie - which was pretty good:
P1000538.JPG

So if we paid OOP - the meal would have cost us $63.46. On the DDP, it was 5 CS credits, plus $4.04 OOP or the onion rings. This was a good meal and we would return here again.

On to snacks - So the little ones wanted to go play in The Boneyard - and I wanted to get a snack. DS18 and I went next door to Dino Bite Snacks. I know the family loves Churros - so I ordered 4 of those and a hot fudge sundae for me. Here is a pick of DS18 trying to hide from the Churro pic. Funny thing is, right as I wanted to take this pic, he said to me "Dad, everyone knows what a Churro is". Meaning I didn't need to take a picture for you all. Well as we were walking away, some girls in line said to each other "Hey - what's a churro?":
P1000542.JPG

Here is a pick of their menu:
P1000540.JPG

So if we paid OOP for the snacks, it would have cost us $14.01. On the DDP it was 5 snack credits. BTW - the sundae had ice cream, hot fudge, nuts and a cherry - but no whipped cream:confused3 - come on Dino-Bites - get some whipped cream over there!!

I was concerned about my comments about Le Cellier as I was walking around today - as I didn't want to come off as snooty. I eat out a lot with clients because of work, so I get to go to very nice places sometimes, and DW and I will frequent some high end places from time to time. I just had such high hopes, that it would have been tough for Le Cellier to match them. It was very good - we all enjoyed it - and it was well worth the price. So hopefully, I don't discourage anyone from going there. One of our best meals of the trip!!:thumbsup2

Nope, didn't take it as snooty at all. Actually you gave me some insight as to why (perhaps) many people don't like it. I am enjoying your perspective very much! And we enjoy Flame Tree too...

Ahhh - onto Boma.

So coming off of my not so hot buffet experience at Cape May, I was concerned about another buffet, this time Boma. Well I must tell you, this was probably one of the best buffets I have ever eaten at - ever!!!:worship:

We took the 5 minute bus ride over from AK to the Animal Kingdom Lodge. Boma and Jiko are downstairs on the 1st floor. I checked in, and we waited about 5 minutes before being called. Here is a pic of the entrance sign and the price list:

I really was looking forward to taking a bunch of photos of all of the food stations - but for some reason, with the lighting, pictures were not looking so good:confused3 so I canned that idea (sorry everyone - everything looked really good in person). So here are some food picks from our plates, starting with DD. She had lots of different fruit, chicken nuggets, fries and mac n cheese - which she had 2 servings of the mac!!:
P1000557.JPG

Here is DS9's first of 3 plates. Starting at the top and going clockwise - lots of fruit, a taste of watermelon rind salad, salmon, and calamari salad:
P1000558.JPG

Next is my plate. Starting with the beef in the middle and working clockwise - And BTW, I must say, this was tremendous beef, and probably the best I have had in a buffet setting. Extremely well cooked and seasoned (they offered medium and medium-rare) plus multiple sauces for the pork and beef - I went with Sambal - I like a little spice. Fufu - which seemed to be a blend of potato and sweet potato, excellent. Calamari salad. Watermelon rind salad - nice and crunchy. Potato. And finally pork shoulder - another item that was well cooked and delicious!!:
P1000560.JPG

I also had a coconut seafood curry - excellent as well. Those are mussell shells you see sticking out there:
P1000561.JPG

I feel really bad about the other pictures not coming out, as I tried about 10 other things and they were all great!! They had several salads, 3 or 4 other soups, lots of fruit, and starch items like cous cous, mashed potato, etc. plus some unique items - like one that I can't remember the name, but sort of looked like blocks of tofu in red sauce, but tasted like grits. Here is a picture of the layout from my table, which was the very first one on the right when you walk in:
P1000565.JPG

Here is a shot of just some of the desserts:
P1000563.JPG

And of course, they had bread pudding:hug: and peach cobbler, which is on the left:

I can not say enough good things about Boma. Our server Jose checked on us every 5 minutes, even if it was to look and see if we needed plates removed. Great service, more than friendly greeters and chef staff - especially over at the meat station. So many options, even picky eaters will be fine, and adventurous ones will enjoy the different tastes and textures. I wish I had a Boma close to my house, as I would love to go here again - soon!! One note of caution - go to Boma when you are hungry - too much good food here:woohoo:!

Now the math:teacher: - If we paid OOP, it would have cost us $139.47. On the DDP, we used 3 adult TS credits and 2 kid TS credits. I also asked if they did smoothies here on the DDP, and they said no, Again, maybe they just allow them at Le Cellier. Anyone know???

So the math for the day breaks down like this:teacher:. If we paid OOP for lunch, snacks and dinner, we would have paid $216.94. On the DDP, we have our regular $141.95 plus $4.04 for the onion rings at lunch; which brings the total to $145.99.

On tap for dinner tomorrow we have ADR's at Teppan Edo:yay:.

Caution - Pics that have nothing to do with food are in this post - please skip on if you don't care to see the cute animals

Well since we had never visited the Animal Kingdom Lodge, I just had to check it out. I heard so much about the Savannah view rooms and such, so I was thinking...how close are you really to the animals. Well the answer is - really close!! Here are some pics from today of the animals that you can walk around and see:

Ohhh - those look good!!! Definitely on the list for the next go around.

What a great dining review! Thank you so much for sharing. I have to echo everyone in saying you are a beautiful family! I am especially appreciating your review as we'll be traveling with our 18 and 6 yo daughters and 3 yo son.

In trying to decide on ADRs for our trip, I think you've sold me on Boma, so thanks! And we play to hit a lot of the places on your list, but not that clam bake! ;)

OK - I booked ADR's at Akershus as I wanted to do a character meal on the DDP that my DD7 would love - and who better to get her excited but princesses. We arrived a few minutes late, and only had to wait about 3 minutes before they called us in. We had pictures taken with Belle, one with Gabriella by herself and one with the whole family. They also gave us both photos as part of the package. Here is Belle and Gabby taken with my camera:

Love your daughter's pose. I can't wait to take my Gabby to meet Belle. She will be thrilled, but I'm thinking breakfast meal may be better?

Yes, you have the age spread like we do - how fun!!. Yes - stay away from the clam bake:scared1:

How did you like the Zebra domes?

Oh and that is so funny about the girls who didn't know what a Churro is lol.

Great reviews as usual! The animal are great as well! I love the pic of the giraffe looking up. May I ask what type of camera you use? I am looking to buy a new one soon. :)

This is a great review! Thank you so much for posting all your photos & details of your Disney dining! I hope that even with the crowds that you're managing to go on some rides -- your kids look like they are very happy, so I would guess that you are!:)

Your reaction to Boma was pretty much like ours. Just want to throw an idea or suggestion your way: Try it for breakfast, oh my oh my

We had dinner there in 2007 and I did breakfast there in Feb, once again fabulous. I ended up with the same server again, Rahim, he too was fabulous. He ended up looking for me on several occassions as I made numerous trips to the pods. By the way that item you couldn't name, may have been pap. The also serve pap at breakfast and it is a lot like grits. There are sauces available there too.

If you've already committed those credits and aren't changing I thought $16.99 was a fair price for I what I considered a wonderful brunch. Its only $9.99 for children. I'm actually thinking we'll do this OOP on our upcoming DP trip. We are a family of 2 Adults and a 7yo boy. If you decide to add this you may want to pay OOP for a non buffet child meal as they are usually less than $9.99, then use their credit here. We did this at Narcoossee's, spent $6 for the child meal there and saved his 2TS for other meals.

I've been following along with your reviews but am just now posting.

First of all, two thumbs up! Your reviews and pictures are outstanding. Secondly, I agree with the previous poster - if you enjoyed dinner at Boma, definitely try breakfast. It was absolutely terrific. Third, and I'm agreeing with everyone else on this one, you have a beautiful family!

Thanks so much for sharing. :)

Thanks for this great detailed food report / DDP price comparison report!:thumbsup2 Only a Diser could think of this!:lmao:
