Family being EXTREMELY cheap tippers!!

Bad Karma on them, that is sad but there are some people no matter what will not tip or tip very poorly. I think I would have to say something to them, like thank god we are not at the same table I am embarrassed of you. SHAME SHAME

There are family members in our party of seven that will be going to the world with us in September and we are counting on free dining. But we are splitting up the seven of us at dinner because they refuse to pay a 18% tip. Their tale is how free is it if we have to chunk down a $30-$40 tip every night!! They want to leave a flat $5 at every table. Anyway I am somewhat glad that we will be split!!!! I really don't know how to change their minds about this situation.

These are the kind of people that will insure that Disney adds the service charge to all dining.

I bet your right. And who could blame them, after getting just about stiffed how do you think the service to the next table is going to be, wich is kinda understandable.

Amazing, some people are just too much.

I just don't get it. If they can afford the vacation, then they can afford the tips that are associated with the vacation.

If they can't/won't pay the tip, then they should keep their butts home.

I agree because it will negatively affect the wait staff wich might affect my service.

I waited tables in a past life. So did my husband, while I was a stay at home Mom, in order for our children to eat on a military salary.The feeling a server gets when stiffed is horrible. I always keep in mind that even a good server can have a bad day. Our family just budgets the tip as if it is part of the cost of the meal. I guess it is easier to understand when you have been there and done that...

A lot of people think it's us "foreigners" who stiff the wait staff - either intentionally or through ignorance to the system in the US. While visiting Florida, we've always found it to be a select group of tight-wads and yes, many of them have been American.

We're Scottish and have been visiting Florida for over 25 years so we are well aware of how things work within the food service industry. We have always tipped at least the recommended amount, and just counted it as part of the cost of our meal.

On our last vacation in October 2006, an American family at the next table heard our accents and started chatting to us. The dad of the family mentioned he was a business owner and the whole family (2 adults & 2 children) were dressed well. They were ready to leave a little before us, said their goodbyes, and the guy took out his wallet to leave a tip as the meal was already paid for. Both my DH and DDad noticed that he only left $2! Well, my dad was horrified and insisted that my mum left an even better than usual tip as we had the same server and knew just how great he was!

We have also heard the "We just leave $5/$10/whatever because it's easier to work out" excuse. It's not that complicated people - take your total, divide by 5 (that gives you 20%) and put that amount on the table!
