Facebook Banned from DIS!

Irony is the Dis is on FB themselves, will they cut their own link?

I had a quick unscientific test and it's not just FB Links removed, but blogs and trip reports anything to any social media.

This will not change anything. It's not going to make the Dis meet threads more active. If anything, it will force those who try to participate in both types of groups to make a choice. IMO, many will choose some place other than the Dis.

Oh well, it is what it is.

I am so upset as I am not on FB and not one person from our DIS group goes on this site it seems. Even PM'd the person in charge of FE and no response. It's only on FB and we can't join the FE since I'm not on there. Very sad. I wish DIS was as active as it used to be!

Stop being upset, get cracking and start your own FE list here on the DIS for yourself and the others who are not on Facebook.

Who says the two FE groups have to join one another?

I wish dis meets threads were more active but I agree...until Disboards sorts out their App, FB is going to win.

Sorry-- I think this is elitist to say no links. There are many benefits to being able to have a link to the DIS from Facebook, and vice versa. :crazy2:

Seems to me that "secret" facebook groups with a "gatekeeper" is about as "elitist" as it gets.

No one is preventing anyone from participating in whatever forum they choose, but merely putting an end to the "recruiting" here on the DIS. If it is THAT difficult to find a cruise meet on facebook, perhaps the problem lies within.

I think the reason for a FB group being set up as secret is to hopefully keep out the spammers and those that aren't cruising but just fishing for info. That's my understanding anyway. I am the administrator our our cruise group, along with one other person, and honestly, I really have no way of knowing if you really are on the cruise or not. I just hope you are honest when you ask for permission to join the group?? I have no access to any special info. I started the group because no one else had and did provide the link on our DIS thread but that has now been disabled. Right now I'm successfully using the DIS app on my iPad but usually it doesn't work very well.

Exactly! I've been in two different cruise meet/roll call groups (on different boards) for the same cruise. We each had our own FE group. There were people on both boards who participated in both groups. There were people on both boards who participated in only one of the FE groups. There were people who were only on one board/FE group who participated, and some who posted on one or the other of the group forums, but didn't participate in the FE group.

Lots of choices.

It's about protecting not banning...anyone who is on a specific cruise can join, but it's a way to weed out the spammers.
And there is no problem whatsoever finding a cruise on facebook. It was a great way to combine the two by at least mentioning them here. Oh well....disboards lost me on this one. I will continue to use this forum for info and reading and such, but to block out not only FB but also peoples' personal blogs...pretty sad.

I agree with a PP who called Disboards out on adverts. That's what it always comes down to isn't it? Money.

A very well written honest and to the point post thank you, fully agree, yes our FB Cruise thread for the Med this very had people " selling" allowed to join and spammed posts promotion tours in Turkey 24/7, and others were added who were not on our cruise but just wanted to post there.

I fully agree that as the horse has bolted this will do harm back and not be effective.

Feels more about protecting advert income on clicks to the site lost to FB as it will do the opposite to the stated reasons.

Exactly! Lets be honest with what this is, I love how people think this is for the purity of the meet... lets call it for what it is, this is a for profit web site that gets ad revenue based on internet traffic and meet threads are a major source of ad revenue. Nothing wrong with it by the way.

This was never a discussion about what was better FB or Disboards, honestly it's not even a fair comparison you're talking about one of the most successful web companies ever and the second most searched site behind google vs. #1476 really all the back and forth about security and what not is a joke. It's about eye's on the screen and time spent on the site. DisBoards traffic has probably been trending downward with the proliferation of FB meets and new users being run off the site b/c they accidentally got into a discussion with an old timer here, and they'd like to get a piece of the pie back... I do think that this is being short sighted though and ultimately will cost the site more in the end IMO.

I don't know where anyone is reading the implication this was a debate about purity. Of course it has to do with traffic.

What makes you think there aren't non-cruisers repeatedly using this site to establish a meet thread and immediately set up alternate links for FE information; etc with the sole purpose of redirecting the traffic elsewhere?

I find this utterly ridiculous. I like reading reports and such on the Dis but for meets, it's so much easier to communicate on FB. I think they will definitely lose traffic over this. Major fail on their part. :confused3

Someone can make a topic and then the comments show up to that directly. It is way easier to manage and see everyones comments about a specific topic when they are all under each other chronologically trhan trying to follow a 150 page thread with quotes all over the place.:groom:

Agreed.

If the DIS app didn't suck I'd enjoy it more! I've sent app support help and never get anything back! With that being said I personally think Facebook is easier. Every group I have been part of we've communicated well with those on DIS who don't do FB. We still originate our FE and any other meets through DIS so no one misses out. I guess there's just less caring people than me who are making FB groups. I never intentionally leave people (when I start a FB group) out of the loop for this reason exactly! Irresponsible people are the ones who shouldn't be making FB groups!

Unfortunately, I don't see this thread lasting long based on the DIS guidelines.

....

So when people ask questions, we will no longer be able to provide them with the most up to date and complete answers. What's the point? Wdwinfo has never been complete or UTD. I tried to have information updated when I was a mod.

If this is being enforced, I will not be participating in any more DIS meet threads. FB has been a useful tool that allowed people to link up on the boards and then have a safer place to have discussions and get to know each other. That simply does not exist on an open message board. I personally experienced having my family be stalked via the first meet thread we participated in and the trip report I posted. Finding out that someone had printed and framed pictures of my children to display in their home sickened me. There has been no one on this board to moderate in over a year, besides the WMs when they have been notified by a report. The sticky notes at the top are way out of date and there are many meet threads littering up the main forum that should have been moved to the proper place. Sorry, but the lack of attention is very apparent in the boards over the past year especially. If the desire is to increase traffic here, then some basic care needs to be taken to what is provided.

There is at least one poster who has reported being banned from or not allowed to join the FB group for her cruises. So yes, in some cases it is a "gatekeeper" function.

Disboards probably was amazing several years ago, and I still get lots of useful info, but it seems like every thread has at least 2 people who just was to be mean, rude, and argue. Add that to getting "in trouble" for every little thing a mod thinks is bad, and seriously- the atmosphere is just downright sad on the boards. This is my 5th time joining a FB. Cruise group and I have never had one problem.

I 'run' our meet group here on the DIS and on f/b. I message anyone who requests to join our group on f/b asking if they are indeed booked on this sailing. If I get no reply, I'll add them and tag them that I've sent them a pm. If I get no reply and they do not introduce themself, I delete them from the f/b group. We don't ask everyone to be vocal but to introduce themselves. I keep the list of FE running on both sides. We have some who are only on one or the other and I mention that there are certain things only being done on the DIS (a candy exchange) and direct them to our thread here and tell them they have to create an account and post to get on that list. Is our f/b group more active, YES it is because it's very easy to keep up on things. Our DIS thread goes days without anyone posting. Since we booked opening day I get to a point where I'm not sure if people have dropped out since they never post again on the thread as time goes by.

And why is a facebook link at the bottom of EVERY SINGLE post (so you can share the post or thread right to facebook) along with Twitter, Pinterest and email?

That's scary! :scared1:
