Facebook Banned from DIS!

I am perfectly fine with this. Although I am not adverse to using Facebook, there are many people on here that want to participate in DISmeets and DIS-started FE groups and feel left out. This eliminates me having to jump between the 2 mediums to participate. The DIS is #1 to me for Disney info and communication, so I am perfectly fine with this. Their board....their rules. Cruise Critic also has the same rule regarding the posting of FB links. Heck...there are FB groups that don't allow you to post anything related to the DIS. Their board....their rules.

Personally I like this rule. I am one of those people who do not do Facebook. I do not care for groups (fe/meets/planning) to be advertised on the dis boards only to be directed somewhere else. I like the one stop information that disboards offers. I a, not interested in jumping back and forth between 2 sources. I am not against Facebook, I just do not feel any advertising needs to be done,

I have only participated in two cruise meets, both of which had a 'secret' FB group linked to them. In each case the FB page grew out of the DIS meet and involved most of the folks from the DIS meet thread. In both cases the Admin made sure that the DIS thread was kept in the loop in regards to meet-ups etc, and we had no wierdness from people scamming or being mean etc..

I don't see this ban as being a win win for the DIS Cruise. With their current format and guidelines, cruise planning and discussion is sooooo much easier on FaceBook for two main reasons:

1) topics are organized to comments, no quoting and scrolling through pages or a slow DISboards APP.

2) easier to post links and information about planning/excursions ... and the practice of DIS censorship no matter how well intentioned... is still censorship.

I feel like I actually got to know my fellow cruisers on FB, we saw eachother's pics, made jokes to eachother that would have earned an infraction on the DIS. Our kids hooked up prior to the cruise by participating on the FBmeet which would not have happened with a DIS only meet as my daughter is not on the DIS. Once when someone was having an issue it was solved through the quicker FB communication. I am still FB friends with some of my fellow cruisers. I do not think that result would be the same for me at least if the meet had been restricted to just the DIS.

I thought I've read that FB doesn't allow DISboards links? :confused3

I don't think they are saying you can't mention that there is a FB group on the DIS Cruise Meets. You just can't post a direct link to it.

No, you're wrong. There is a general Disney Cruising Facebook group that does not allow any links or references pertaining to the DIS.

TXDCLfan is not wrong. Read Shmoo's post quoted above. She didn't say a specific FB group, she referred to FB as a whole. That is incorrect. What private FB groups choose to do is not the same as what FB allows.

Seems to me that people come to the DIS for information and go to FB for the Meets. That's just the way things have evolved. I don't think this little seen new rule is going to change the evolution of this. It would be better just to find a way to get along.

I agree, I was reading this at the time of posting last night ( for me) and Kasey is 100% correct on this.

There was misinformation posted re FB that had to be corrected, posted by someone who states they do not use FB, -not sure how they know then?

This new rule is not productive and I agree will not be beneficial. I don't see why the boards and facebook can't co-exist. I will come on the disboards weekly but facebook comes right to my phone - for busy people this is huge. If I sat around all day it would be a different story, but I work 60 hours a week. This will not encourage me to participate more on disboards - I just don't have the time.... We had a great facebook group for last years Med cruise and we still have it! It was such a more personable way to get to know each other before the cruise and keep in touch. We already have a fb group for our 2015 group...hmmm. This is really taking power too far when you start banning social media, this is 2014 and many people use it regularly. No one has to participate but why take it away from those who do??? If the people who make up these rules are volunteers who is setting this rule up? Is it Disney? I just don't get it...

I've recently run up against an online forum restriction issue that, in its core, originated from a personal vendetta. Not here. Another forum. It is entirely disgusting and shameful that the situation had to be exacerbated so that it affected so many people who didn't have anything to do with it or even knowledge if an issue behind the scenes. I took that restriction very personally. I had put many years of loyalty and friendship into that (online) place. It felt like my home. But because of a situation between a sponsor and one if my dearest friends I ended up on the receiving end of the shun. And it hurt my feelings deeply.

Why tell you all this?

Because what my heart that felt "at home" on that forum failed to remember is that in the beginning and at the end of the day its a business. It was a business before I got there and it'll be business as usual if I decide to leave. A heart has no safe place in a forum. It DOES in the friendships formed there which can't be taken from me.

Prior to this big hullabaloo I had swore off FB. I reactivated to be able to stay connected to my circle of friends. Maybe we'll find another "home" in the form of a forum which I prefer. But if not, that's okay, too. It is nice to be able to talk freely amongst ourselves without worry that someone will come in and kick us all out. Its nice to let our hair down! For a non-FB gal it's been a little insight into what the FB folks here are saying about being able to say what's on your mind without editing to conform to rules. Not that Dis doesn't need rules. Absolutely it does because its a public place of business.

I stopped even looking at the DisMeet section for my sailings because they all seem to be full of FB redirecting. I know that Dis groups can form parallel to the FB groups but that doesn't seem to happen as often as not. As a mostly not interested in FB person, I found and still find the FB redirecting off-puting. So I do understand the side of the non-FB people. Many say "Well there's no activity on Dis but there is on FB so I go there." I get ya. But, it wasn't always this way. As the FB group popularity grew it adversely affected the Dis threads. Now people (like me) don't bother with the DisMeet threads because they more often than not are full of FB references. Its a cycle. I'd like to think the DisMeets can bounce back but that will remain to be seen.

Personally, I'm anti-social enough IRL to be okay with walking onto my cruises with anonymity and no group of people to belong to outside my family. I'm clever enough to have found ways of finding info as needed to build my cruise plans with. It's all good.

What I've heard often in many of the posts on this thread is passion and emotion. That applies to both sides of the coin. Neither side is wrong. Both sides care. So many have feelings about Dis because its a "home". For anyone to feel unhappy, uncomfortable, or unwelcome in a place they know as "home" brings feelings of hurt and anger. Believe me, I know!!!

Just remember: Dis is a business first and formost. It belongs to its owners, not you. You wouldn't want anyone telling you what you should or must do with anything you own. Right? It's the owner's prerogative to decide what they want. And that isn't wrong.

If you want to do the FB groups go to FB & do them. From what I've heard, it's not too difficult to search for your cruise & find the meets there. If you want to do DisMeets, by all means, DO. If you want to do both - you have way more energy than me! LOL!

My point is that everyone needs to step back a moment. Understand that these boards are a business that belongs to somebody. Appreciate the passion and emotion of the members/users on all sides of the issue.

Both FB & DisMeets have their place and legitimacy in their existences. It's okay for the owners of this site to have a wish to keep them separated. One doesn't dictate value or a lack of value of the other.

Take a breath. Relax. Do what's right for you. Respect others' choices, feelings, and opinions as you would like to be respected. This also applies to the owners of this forum/website. It's only fair to give what you'd like to receive.

Happy Labor Day....

Another plus to Facebook is that you can easily do polls. On the message boards, you need to dedicate an entire thread to the poll, and you can't limit the thread to just your meet. It was much easier on FB to figure out the best times for a private Mixology for our group.

I think if I had to choose where to set up cruise group, I think I'd skip doing it here and go right to FB. I would no longer direct FB users to the DIS as I'd been doing in the past.

It's the DIS' loss, really.

well said. You said a few things I was thinking, but didn't say

Yeah, it's been a bit of an eye-opening week. As I came to terms with the drama elsewhere this FB thing appeared here and the 2 situations have similarities for me. In the end, everyone needs to do what feels right for them.

I'll still be here but feel like I have a better perspective to move forward with. :)

I prefer the FB cruise groups, there are alot less " rules" as far as what you can say and talk about. I have done three and never had a issue with bullies or drama... And sorry but so much less judgment in MY opinion.

Agree completely. Love being able to post in a more liberal forum.
And a question, isn't is against board policy to discuss management decisions?

Of course FB is more liberal. It's designed that way on purpose.

FB is a for-profit publicly traded corporation you all blindly feed which continually mines your personal information every second - not some safe fun little chat room to hang out in.

If this decision by the mods here was a wake up call let me alert you an even bigger one!

EVERYTHING!!! EVERY SINGLE bit of information you give to establish and maintain your FB accounts and EVERY keystroke you type has been DATA MINED and HACKED straight thru to your phone APPS.

This includes: All your thoughts/your feelings/your habits/your pictures/your family / your careers and every "private' cruise group you happily join.
There is no security.

Not to make you feel worse, but that has been going on looooong before facebook. If you have had a computer, cell phone or credit card/debit card in the last couple of decades then your personal information has been mined over and over.

I do not post anything on facebook that is private, because I know that true privacy is not an option in the digital age.

Sorry to burst your bubble but everything you post here does the same.. You must not realize how easy it is to found out things by just a name search.. Trip reports? Yep... It makes it even easier... EVERYTHING, as you say.. It is the internet even on the DIS...

I wish DIS would enforce this. Anybody new on the meet thread for an upcoming cruise is directed to FB and there is no communication on DIS. I was blocked from joining my cruises FB page so I am entirely out of the loop, but I am going on a DC so who needs new friends when you got the old ones waiting;) I need my MM::MickeyMo

Why were you banned? That seems odd unless you did something against the rules.

You can get banned on the DIS as well so not sure why this is an issue. The admin's set the rules in both cases (thankfully!).

Here are the guidelines for the DIS.

http://www.wdwinfo.com/guidelines.htm/

Notice how infractions have points and will get you temporarily or permanently banned.

No bubble here. I have nothing new to realize. We are free to pick our poison.

My $.02

We're really talking about 3 groups/things

1. The disboards/cruise meet threads - clearly owned by dreams unlimited. Its been around for years, & many of us call it home for all things disney.

2. The facebook meet pages - In their purest form, I really don't have a problem with them. Many people use facebook on a daily basis & some like the convenience of only keeping up with one social media. (We run into this same debate in our neighborhood - "nextdoor" site vs. the neighborhood Facebook page). When I first noticed them popping up, it seemed like just an organic offshoot of your individual cruise-meet thread. Mostly started by disboard members taking their individual cruise-meet thread to the next level. Maybe even as a way to avoid disboard rules on discussing certain topics - not really sure - and really doesn't bother me if they did.

3. The Disney Cruising facebook page - This is where I feel things get a little murky. Its basically a facebook page set up in the model of a facebook version of the disboard's Disney Cruise section. Also, if boiled down to its purest form, I'm not sure most folks wouldn't have a problem it. However it appears to be started & run by a travel agent just like disboards, but not as openly as the disboards is run by DU. They have just as many, if not more, rules than the disboards. (I've seen posts get deleted so fast your head would spin - they call it "poof")

They list the facebook meet threads & discuss fish extenders & door decorations. Not that disboards has a patent on those things or anything, but I could see some bad-blood watching them get co-opted on a competitor travel agent's site.

Long story even longer, I can really see both sides of the arguement. The traditions of the meets, fish extenders, door decorating all started here on the disboards. Not everyone does facebook so some feel left out, but for the people on facebook many find it more convenient than disboards since they get on facebook everyday anyway (LOL). Add the tie-in to the disney cruising facebook page - which is run by a travel agent competitor to dreams unlimited - and I could see why they wouldn't want the facebook pages promoted on disboards
