Fabulous Deals Coming

The governor in CA announced yesterday that it will be months, not weeks before barbers/hair salons are open. It just occurred to me that I have a WDW trip planned in 3 months time that is looking far more certain now. There's a good chance that will be our first opportunity for a haircut. Crazy.
Different states, different rules, right? My sister lives in Maine and they are allowing salons and barbers to open in May as essential. Interesting.

That's an interesting perspective. We will see. I think if they have a lot of surplus inventory they will want to get rid of it quickly. Depends on the business I guess.

i think it's going to be kind of hit and miss on deals. the u.s. west coast ports have been working at less than full capacity for over a month so that could impact what has/will arrive. so much of what we consume is made outside the u.s. and if it's from a country that's had a major health hit then their exportation will have been impacted. the issues with the ports will also impact the cruise lines once they get up and running. i strongly suspect that after all the issues/expenses the western states had to deal with on the 'virus ships' there are going to be some costly consequences and new agreements/policies put into place before those ships are allowed to start back up departing/stopping at some ports (alaskan cruises might as well be announced as called off for this year at minimum-up here in washington our governor is being VERY cautious and slow on the roll out of the 'new normal', it won't be until july or august before anything resembling a tourist friendly seattle will be possible, and the cruises that normally stop at victoria island wouldn't be allowed to b/c they are only allowing essential people there).

there's a big difference between the last recession and what we will be dealing with now. it was dollars and cents with the last recession, this time it's life and death that's caused entire industries to shutter their doors and stop producing products. at least in my state, when stuff starts opening back up it's going to be closely monitored and at the first sign of an uptick in cases it could be shut down again in a heartbeat. that's likely to have businesses not producing at their prior rate or at the very least looking to what their sales were like during the last recession and adjusting production down.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I did some research and it seems like all the dealers are offering 0% interest for 72 months. I wanted to be aggressive and pay off my car in 3 years but I need to stay within my means. That’s my biggest problem.

Im scheduled to pay off a 5 year car loan after just 17 months - sometimes its nice to have the flexibility of the lower payment and then be as aggressive as circumstances allow. 🙂

I agree. I have a 4 year note to get a 1.9% rate. I’d jump all over a 72 month 0%, but I’d worry they’re pushing the interest into the gross margin.

Car sales are going to be down for April. If they don’t come back in May, I’d expect some deals in June. However, most sales typically occur during the beginning of the year, so most dealers have already sold a good chunk of their yearly sales already.

as a caution to anyone looking at deals like this.

years ago i worked in retail that offered this type of financing. the way the industries made money was entirely based on customers who failed to read the fine print on how that zero percent financing worked. our prices/profits were built such that the fees, penalties and true interest that retroactively kicked in if a purchaser was so much as 10 minutes late in making a single payment (even the 72nd and final) made up for the 1% who actually managed to meet the 'great deal' criteria. READ the fine print-learn that despite paying ahead of time/more than the minimum for 5 years and 11 months that if your final payment of so much as $1 is a day late the financing company can go back and charge whatever god awful interest (back when i worked in this it was in the teens), along with 6 years of penalties-all entirely legal under that spectacular no interest contract.

2019 was frankly the worst year of my life, with bad news at every turn, it seemed. Starting to plan a Nov 2020 WDW trip with DD was a life saver. No idea when our trip will actually take place, but it still works to help us stay sane, something we both desperately need.

While 2020 events are not as intensely personal as what we faced in 2019, it is still a bumpy ride and I definitely appreciate anything that lets us look forward to better times!

Obviously, my first BIG expenditure will be our trip, and we are now looking at it including more family members. YAY!

Stay safe, and optimistic, everyone.
:flower3: I know exactly what you mean.

This is a great thread for thinking about what we can and want to do in the hopefully near future. I am hoping for good deals on cars. We have 2 old cars (17 years old and 15 years old) and we really need a new one. My hours have been cut so if I get back most of my hours at some point this year and DH is still employed, we are car hunting. Plus travel deals will be fun to look at. I also will be looking forward to eating in my favorite local restaurants. We are supporting them now by doing take out. We all need a bit of optimism and don't need the gloom and doom all the time. Thanks for starting the thread.
I think we bought our car a month too early! :rotfl:

I can see how that happens to people. I got some flooring done last year with a 0% financing for a year. First time I've ever done financing like that. Luckily I was making montly payments. About a month or so ago I just happened to finally read the bills I was getting after about 6 months (I know, not smart), and it said that if you were more than 30 days past a due without the minimum payment, the promotion would be invalid and you'd pay all the interest. I just assumed that if you paid it off in the timeframe, you didn't pay interest even if you didn't pay every month. I'm so glad I was making monthly payments.

Its funny, you're taught/told to read everything before you sign it. But I bet most people don't. Even buying a car. There are so many papers you sign, that I don't read them. Every time I've bought a car the person just tells me what I'm signing, and I sign it.

You read alot about people ending up paying more for rental cars because they signed something without reading it. But, once again, if you sit there and actually read everything it will take a while and I'm sure you'd be getting rushed not only by the agent but other people around (as well as your family). What I do when I sign those is I look to make sure the total rate is what I expected, and I try to skim to see anywhere that has a $ to see what its saying in case its adding anything.

Hotels, I just sign when they tell me to. Never read those. Once again, I look for the rate and if its right I sign.

I'm sure there are many more examples. I'm sure I'm in the majority in these situations too.

My husband is a teacher! Let me know what you find out about Verizon :) I would love to do an overwater bungalow too!
Verizon is my carrier and there is a place on their website where you can apply for the teacher discount. You just send them a copy of your last paystub. I just renewed my discount in March.

I’ve been holding off on shopping for clothes since I’ve been living in the same leggings, tees, and sweatshirts for the past 7 weeks and will just shift to short versions soon. No need for nice things right now. But, its hard to resist the 70% off at Loft and similar deals coming through my inbox. As others have mentioned, retailers have all those spring work outfits that most of us didn’t need.

I work for a school district that has been hit pretty hard from COVID-19. The past week or so, each time I open my work email I read about another passing of someone in the school community. It’s depressing to say the least. Our Governor just spoke about how mental health issues are skyrocketing during this crisis because we’re dealing with loss, illness, isolation, joblessness, loss of income, and the stress of being confined at home. So looking forward to the day this is all over and we can get out and go back to work, see our friends and family, shop, eat out, and travel is keeping us sane. The town golf courses here just reopened and we booked a tee time - for Monday. The weekend was already booked up. Many are looking to get out and do something for fun and exercise. It doesn’t negate the fact that we realize the crisis and what is going on.

Vacation is transitioning into mental health days since it's hard to go anywhere. Our bosses want us to keep it together.

I'm keeping my eyes on Backcountry and REI for clothing deals. I did get some shorts from Costco for the summer for what I usually end up paying--about $20. But I'm expecting much better deals on outdoor gear as National Parks and trails remain closed. Outdoor gear and clothes tend to last a long time, but they usually cost more.

I do need to buy some back to work clothes too.

I’m just afraid to buy work clothes right now as they may not actually fit me in September :D
I did find a pair of my favorite running shoes online today for half price. Now, if the weather would cooperate so that I could actually get outside...
You’re right about athletic wear, I’ll have to take a look to see if there are any good sales. I did pick up a new pair of leggings. :flower:

American Eagle has been having good deals my daughter has liked on bathing suits and the new real me style of leggings she is in love with (swears they don't pinch or squeeze her curves) while I got nice dress shoes for my son for Macys for job hunting. Also, I picked up a bunch of Old Navy flip flops and cute Tshirts that I think may make cute masks. We have a bunch of people making them locally so I figured I could get some tshirts and provide the material so I could donate the rest to their hospital efforts.

Obviously airline travel rates are great, I don't know if I'd personally fly right now though. Driving would be more to my comfort level currently. Haven't seen any cell phone deals, but I keep getting emails with tons of shopping discounts for shop Disney, Kohl's, and other stores. Deals are definitely out there! I hope you find the deals you are looking for, even if they aren't out yet....there may be more to come☺️

I'm so sorry for the losses in your district. Thank you for the information on Verizon. I will chase that down. I hope you have a wonderful day on the links. Getting outside has been my salvation in this. We are MA so it's been a cold and wet spring but I have been out as much as I can and today is supposed to be beautiful. We will all get through this. <3

Our a Disney trip was cancelled. The plan is to go again next Easter, but I’m waiting to hear what Disney will allow with my already purchased military promo tickets. If they won’t refund/extend expiration/apply to next year, then I’m finding a time to go!

Our school calendar is set for next year, but I am leery that it may still change. I’ve looked at airfare and have found very few good deals that would work for us. Sure, I could fly later this month, but with no pools and other amenities unavailable/closed, it doesn’t make sense to risk our lives (not that a pool would...)

We have reservations for Hilton Head the first part of June. We will drive and have a condo so I really think we’re in good shape to make that trip work. I have reservations for the last week of May at the Dells (again driving and staying in a condo), and the resort website says the plan is to open (with pools) May 26. 🤞

We’ve been pouring money into home improvement projects. We don’t have any big purchases coming up over the next few years. Discounts on travel would be nice. We just bought a brand new truck in January and remodeled our kitchen (all new big appliances). I can’t think of anything that we really need except maybe a new couch.
