Fabulous Deals Coming

We are looking forward - positively - on upcoming family Disney cruises. After all this shutdown, the last thing we need is a hurricane!

After last night's take out, we can't wait to go out to dinner. I never realized how much plate presentation works for the experience of dining out. A filet dinner with loaded baked potato, bread, and salad is my favorite at a national chain restaurant. I ordered take out from the same place last night. It was ready when I drove in (someone was standing at the door with the bag). Got home and unpacked the boxes. The normally beautiful filet sizzling on the plate and overloaded baked potato was reduced to a standard size baked potato in aluminum foil, two little containers (one with sour cream, cheese, bacon bits, scallions) and one with butter (for the bread and potato) and a hockey puck. The "presentation" on our home dinner plate was a standard baked potato with about a tablespoon of "loaded" and a hockey puck.

Can't wait to get back to normal.

What do you guys think would be a good down payment for a college student? I’m budgeting 3k but I don’t think that would be enough. I want to do a 3-5 year loan.
If they offer you a range of months with the same interest rate, take the longest one. You can always pay it off early (though not immediately), but if you lose your job or something and took a short loan, you may regret it.
Yes, do the longer loan period with comfortable payments for your situation. You can always aim to pay it off in 3 years, even if your loan term is 5yrs. But if you get in a bind, continuing to make those lower payments is much better than getting behind on the car or other bills.

We had to cancel all our vacations from now to September. I just checked the prices on the 3 dream cruises I cancelled in early September, and the prices are down about $600 per cruise. I hope it is safe to sail in September and we can rebook at the lower price - like getting 1 cruise for free!!

people are dying from this virus and this is what you are thinking. From a earlier post of yours which you responded to me same thing.
We are going to need a whole bunch of OP’s to get our economy back to where it was. No criticism here. And I say this as someone who has had hours reduced and a husband in a precarious job situation.

Why are you even responding to that person? This is a good thread topic.

Anyway not the car I want but the type of car I want MSRP is already down 6k at 22k. It’s a 2020 car too. I think there’s a 2021 with a new facelift coming. I hope I can get it down to below 20k. There’s over a 150 of the model in my area and over 300 of the model within 100 miles of me. I just hope they still have some in September when I’m ready to buy.

I think it's likely you're going to see 0% rates on loans up to 7 years in the near future. I agree with what someone else said that I would take the longer loan period assuming interest rates are the same.

The only thing that I would tell you to learn from this is that these 5+ year loans on cars will let you learn a valuable lesson and that is that cars are probably the single largest expense that we essentially flush down the toilet. Some people who take out 84 month loans end up owning much more than the car is actually worth by the time it's over.

We bought some great groupons for our future vacation in Florida. The deals have been amazing!
Fyi... have you been to walmart people are spending there stimulus checks on xboxs and tvs you are awesome every little bit helps businesses stay open

one of my friends and I were literally just saying today that the sales are better than Black Friday. She's gotten alot of small appliances at great prices, and we went and got new phones and each got Sam's gift cards for it. I welcome the sales... it's bringing business to businesses that might otherwise suffer. and it also makes this whole miserable thing a little more fun. And what's wrong with that, nothing. We've had to cancel our Disney trip now twice... .so for someone to say that we're insensitive for talking about sales , just move on then and don't read the thread. But honestly in all this uncertainty, it's kind of nice to be able to get things we need at a discount.

I, for one, appreciate your thread topic. My goodness, it's not like you interrupted some other thread of a more dire theme to announced "the hell with you all, I want to go on vacation and buy a new car!"
I need something to look forward to! My husband raised some of the same thoughts you initially did, specifically about travel in our case. We were just about to book something when all this went down, so we held off. Now we are REALLY looking forward to the ability to travel once we can. We are holding off on booking, both to watch and see if any better deals can be taken advantage of, and to avoid booking and having to cancel again. But we are ready.
My SIL is a nurse, she's had to cancel a previously planned trip in March to Universal w/ her daughter & husband. They've rebooked for June, and if they can't go in June, they'll rebook for July......she & her husband have been working their fingers to the bones (nurse & grocery store manager) and one of the things that is keeping them sane is planning their next trip!
Same here, on everything! Luckily, DH has the flexibility that we can book somewhat last minute, but air travel is the current unknown.

Thanks for the support guys! I almost had the admins delete this entire thread because I got so attacked at first. I see a few of those posts have disappeared now. That's okay. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I do believe you can just keep scrolling if you aren't interested in the topic. Looking forward to dreaming of a holiday! We were supposed to take a dream trip in July to Europe but I very seriously doubt that it will happen now. Nothing has been cancelled, nothing changed, just waiting to see what is happening in the world at that time in the world and where everyone's comfort level is. Might lose a bundle, hoping we can at east reschedule if we can't go.

I really want to plan our 30th wedding anniversary trip. I’d love to go to French Polynesia and stay in an over water bungalow - totally a bucket list trip! I’ve been researching how to do it within my modest budget. I’m looking at credit card travel hacking for hotel points and airline miles. I posted a question about credit card points on the Budget Board and got no responses. I figured maybe no one answered because they thought I was insensitive and tone deaf to even ask the question right now. But like you, I need something positive to look forward to to get me through this crisis.

I’m also looking at lists of affordable over water bungalow options and sales on travel sites. There are some amazing prices out there for packages to Moorea next March on Expedia right now! I’m too afraid to book anything at the moment though.

A discount I just heard about today - Verizon is giving discounts to teachers and nurses. I don’t know all the details. I’m a teacher, so I’m going to check it out.

I agree with you. All the stores are sitting on spring/summer inventory. Online ordering is very slow and my younger son is going through a growth spurt! All the eating and sleeping is good for him. But he is definitely going to need clothes.

I have canceled one road trip and postponed another, so I’m going to divert a little bit of that money to replace a few things in my house. I anticipate still spending a lot of time at home and I’ve always cooked a lot. An example is my pizza pans. They are 25+ years old and in terrible shape. My youngest has perfected homemade pizza and I want better pans.

You'll have far better luck if you post your question in the I love credit cards thread than just a post on the board. There are posters there that have done this and will be more than willing to answer your questions and help with a strategy, but as it's already all in that thread tend to not answer outside it, especially as involved as helping can be with a trip like this. I promise we're welcoming and helpful. Read the first few stickies on the first page and dive in, it moves fast and goes off topic and at the moment there's not much cc talk because there's not much going on but if you are looking far out into the future, at least a year but two is better, you'll get help :)

Husband and I are 99.9999% sure we will have to reschedule our 35th Anniversary Trip to WDW which was supposed to begin June 5th. Disappointed. Put a lot into planning that and dreaming about it. But I am hoping that we can reschedule with fewer crowds and better rates as were found in the aftermath of 9/11 and the recession of 2008. So, yes, looking ahead to something positive is better than allowing the sadness and stress of these times to overwhelm you. Keeping mentally and emotionally healthy is important too.

I look forward to having other shopping options to spend my stimulus check besides the one place that seems to have been drawing everyone (Walmart). I feel bad for the small businesses that shut down and lost out on people spending money. So, I am sure there will be some very good deals arriving to draw back the business!

(Great forum topic)

Once travel is allowed, I think that’s where we will see the biggest discounts.

i think it will depend on the type of travel.

i have friends who love cruises but this situation has soured them on the concept and the idea of going on any cruise at any price just sickens them. i suspect that's not uncommon among people so cruises may be one area where deep discounts may be seen. on the other hand-i have family that works for a hotel/destination that while entirely closed since march (with no opening in sight) has kept their switchboard in operation. the get calls at all hours of the day and night asking when they will reopen and if reservations are being accepted. this is a place that's more adult oriented vs. family so i suspect in that area of travel there will be enough demand that discounts won't be offered.

Thank You so much! We've had soo many trips with our 4 kids. We were finally going to "re-visit' the 2 WDW trips we had BK (before kids). Had planned all the things that we've always wanted to do but haven't because we wanted to stay together, as a family, for our vacations with the kids. I've got all our plans saved to a document....It'll happen .... just a little postponed. Far from the worst problem facing the world right now!
