Explosions and shootings in Paris

There are rumblings Congress is going to draft legislation to block the refugees resettling anywhere in the US.

well, at least they have the authority to do so. I may not agree with them, but I will not label that the same type of immature, whiny grandstanding that I have seen out of many state governors who seem to have a disturbing lack of understanding of the limits to their power.

I have a confession to make. Part of me wants to abandon my civilized principles and hopes tight lips are being practiced to keep people in the dark on this so they can exert pressure on a captive "mastermind" without a public outcry.

Finding him and killing him this quick is great for quick justice, but I'm with you. Capturing him gives the opportunity to extract info that might help us prevent other attacks.

And psychologically, this might be too fast for France as far as their healing process. A trial for the mastermind would give them someone to focus on and vent their anger for as long as they need - while still ultimately give them justice. Killing the one responsible this fast, while everything is still very raw, will probably result in the nation seeking out other outlets to vent their anger.

To be really honest I'm hoping they have him alive, don't admit to it publicly, don't offer him access to anything even approximating legal representation and use serious psychological warfare to extract information from him. I wouldn't even be looking at anything like holding him legally responsible for his crimes until he was of no further intelligence use -- and then bring his psychologically broken shell before a court of law to answer for his crimes.

Yep, I'm well on my way to leaving my principles in my rearview. I'm grateful I don't have the power in my hands because I'm clearly not up to the job.

But, but, but....we have to be all nicey, wicey to poor criminals and murderers these days. We have to offer them the food that they deem acceptable, and treat them with much respect and dignity. We can't manhandle them, or use any tactics that would cause them to fret.

In other words, the murderers will receive more consideration than the innocent people that they killed.

And doesn't that just suck?

I understand the anger, I feel it too. I want to be careful I don't throw away the hard won rights to rule of law in a fit of anger and lust for revenge. That leaves me the same barbaric waste of human flesh as the terrorists. We can do better, we need to let wiser minds lead the way to make sure we remain a free, civilized and peaceful society, capable of respecting each others' differences.

I trust the French government to get it right. Much is at stake both now and in the future, and I believe they realize this.

Yeah, 414 raids sounds great, but it was only possible because they didn't need search warrants. Hopefully that is extremely short term and the innocent people affected weren't severely affected.

Absolutely. I don't want to have an attack four years down the road and then have evidence pointing to a 19 year old terrorist whose anger was fueled because when he was a scared and confused 15 year old authorities stormed his home and terrified his family based on suspicions of nothing but the fact they're Muslim and lived in a sketchy neighborhood. It's important how civilized people behave in times of crisis, because our civility should stand in marked contrast to those who seek to destroy it.

I don't think that's uncommon at all. There have always been times when I could have happily stuck a live electrode in some sensitive areas of a wackadoodle or two.
That's why I am glad we have rules, regulations and codes of conducts on the books and out of the hands of Joe citizen.
So we don't crumble into anarchy.
yes it sucks when we treat people we deem evil with compassion and I'll freely wear the "whiney" card, lol. I have no desire for America to turn into North Korea.
Emotional, jungle style law of the land is not something I want to witness.

did I hear this correctly? Disney's All Star resort was evacuated, after a scare?

CNN.com is running a headline that DNA tests are underway to determine whether suspected ringleader was killed in raid.

I think I saw this on BBC earlier, only works if they have the DNA on file though!

For as many times as I've heard forensic scientists testify about DNA I realize now that I'm not sure how long the process itself takes to actually produce a result.
