Expedition Everest - Intensity and Motion Sickness??

It's not too bad, but some people don't like the backwards part. For me the worst part is the brake run at the end that is really jerky!

Hard breaking in general always gets me. Even on rides like 7DMT and Slinky Dog. But usually it's a short lived type of nausea.

It hurts my back, which I have to be careful about anyway. I know to brace on the ones that do it. The Matterhoen at Disneyland is anotehr bad one - it's like "The Tooth Chipper" from The Simpsons! 🤣

I learned something about Star Tours as sometimes I feel a little sick on it and sometimes I don't - it's never serious but sometimes I really want it to be over! Anywya, it will greatly depend on where you sit since hte axis of movement is int eh center. If you sit closer to the center the sensation of movement will be lessened. If you are on the edges or the back, you will feel it more (keep in mind there is more room toward the front of the simulator with no seats so it's not the dead center of the seating area). Anyway, the worst seat for me is the last row on the outside, the one with no seats in front of it. It really does make a difference.
Thank you! Yes we were sitting in the back last trip and both got nauseated. So yeah that makes sense. I never got sick before that.

Okay, so I wanted to pop back on and say thanks again for all the feedback. Given that most people seemed to indicate that it at least wasn't worse than RnRC I decided to give it a go while we were there a few days ago and it was not as bad as I had anticipated. Not a ride that I can say I loved or would want to do over and over, but if my kids want to ride it I can manage. I found it to be less motion sickness inducing than RnRC and surprisingly it was not the backwards part that got to me it was the intensity of the speed after it went forward again after the backwards part. But I survived and now I know it's manageable. Yay!!!

I understand that it is too late and not what you asked, but have you considered the anti nausea patch (Trans-derm Scop)? Works like a charm, much better than oral meds, and lasts 3 days. It's not fun to battle motion sickness, and the freedom to actually enjoy rides without worrying about it constantly or adjusting your plans is lovely.

Also congrats on "success"!

Not so sure how I would feel about no shoulder restraints on the upside down. Its not a matter of when the ride is moving; it’s the chance you get stuck on the top part of a loop.
I am not sure how you would get stuck in an upside down position on a coaster, due to gravity and stuff...

It's happened several times. Not at Disney, but other parks.

I'm slowly working up to trying most rides at WDW. I experience pretty severe motion sickness, but with the use of Meclizine every day I can handle more than I can without. I still feel it though so I'm pretty cautious. Spinning things like the Tea Cups are still totally out. Star Tours I can't see myself managing as it seems too similar to the old Body Wars ride which was the absolute worst.

Any comparisons to other rides in the parks would be helpful too.

You sound SO MUCH like me. I always take meclizine when we are in the parks, every day, as I can't even ride the buses or parking lot trams without motion sickness. I also detest the "falling feeling" so not only are spinning things out of my realm, but also roller coasters. Here is my list of attractions:

>NEVER in this lifetime or the next: EE, RnRC, ToT, any of the Star Wars rides, Barnstormer, AstroOrbiter, Space Mountain, Teacups, Medievil Whirl, MS/orange.
>ONCE and done: Splash Mountain (actually about 6 times- finally ended up with major headaches from this, so I'm done), 7DMT (got really really sick right at the end, where the cars stop outside the Cottage- I was done for several hours after that), FoP (hunkered down and kept my eyes closed, the air blowing in my face helped- and I had a scope patch, meclizine, AND SeaBands at the time. Nope, never again).
>OK, but might not ride: Dumbo, Aladdin, Carousel, Toy Story (the swirling of the cars as they turn the corners makes me uneasy).
USUALLY ride, with caution: Soarin', Test Trak, Dinosaur, any of the Epcot movies that surround you as they play.
SURPRISES that I can tolerate and actually enjoy:
>>BTMRR is my favorite ride ANYWHERE, but I know better than to ride it 2 times in a row!!
>>On Friday, for the very first time, I rode Mission Space Green. It was fine, it wasn't as "tight" inside as I'd imagined. I had to focus/close my eyes briefly sometimes as I'd feel a bit uneasy (but this happens on Soarin, too). The ending was a little rough (I closed my eyes) and was glad when the landing happened, but I was totally shocked that I enjoyed this, didn't feel sick after (I did sit for a couple of minutes just to make sure), and I would ride it again.

I just did a mental walk-through of all 4 parks and I think that anything not listed here is OK, like Kali River Rapids, Navi, HM, Buzz Lightyear, etc. I have NOT been to the Toy Story section of the Studios since SDD and the swirling saucers/space aliens opened, so can't comment, but I think if the swirling saucers move more in a triangular motion (like a Scrambler- I can ride that easily) than spinning around, I'd try it. Not sure about SDD. However, I was definitely surprised by MS/green. I've never ridden that in 30(?) trips to Disney!

I love EE, but I can only ride in the very front. I don't feel sick when I sit up there. Anywhere further back, and the backwards portion does me in.

This past year I tried R&RC and Tower of Terror and I can't say I would ever do them again. R&RC left me pretty queasy and I had to close my eyes almost right away and just clung to the restraint praying it would end, LOL. But I recovered without too much trouble afterwards, sat down and was okay within maybe 15 minutes or so. Tower of Terror made me feel awful. Not exactly nauseous but like my stomach flip flopped and was lodged up inside my chest and my head felt all wonky and the feeling continued for a good couple of hours after the ride. Never want to experience that again.

Of the rides I've still never done, (Mission Space, Star Tours, Space Mountain and EE) Expedition Everest is the only one that I look at and think, maaaaaaybe I can manage. But I'd love some feedback from others about the level of intensity with this ride and how it affected you if you have motion sickness. I've read it's the backwards part that is the worst, but I don't know how long that part lasts.

Any comparisons to other rides in the parks would be helpful too.

Thanks!!

Here's the strange thing for me....I have motion sickness....bad. I did take two Dramamine before visiting AK that afternoon. Rode EE and rocked it!!! Yes I was little dizzy after getting off, but a quick sit and then standing and watching them come out of the tunnel helped me recover quickly. Thunder Mountain....kicked my behind!!! I literally had to sit A LOT longer after that ride. I couldn't understand why that one nearly put me on my butt, but EE didn't.

Yes!!!! THIS!!!!! I was late replying to your post not realizing you'd already gone, but left it anyway. I believe THAT was what made my dizziness kick in after getting off. Going backwards I actually enjoyed....but when that car started rolling again.....whoa!

Fun fact, there are plenty of roller coasters out there that go upside down and only have a lap bar, I love those. And there are a handful that don't go upside down, but still have the over the shoulder restraints.
Yep. The earlier vertical loop coasters (thinking of Revolution and Shockwave) only have lap bars. I live by SFOT and have ridden the Shockwave many, many times. It doesn't need over the shoulder restraints. Meanwhile, some coasters like The Big Bad Wolf (now sadly closed, Busch Gardens in Williamsburg) had over the shoulder restraints and never actually went upside down. Restraint type is not really an indicator of inversion.

As to the OP's question. From everything you've said stay off EE. It's an awesomely fun coaster. Enough adrenaline to get you going, but not so much that you feel overwhelmed. However, if rides like Star Tours give you pause because of motion sickness, EE will probably bother you.
