Expedition Everest Challenge May 5 @ 9:30 2012

Not to scare people, but this particular 5k is a timed race. A few people have posted that the pacing rules for the 5k races tend to be relaxed, with it being much slower than the "timed" races. Unfortunately (depending on your perspective - if you are hoping for an untimed race, I happen to prefer it becuase its timed), since the EE race isn't a family fun run like most of the other 5k's, its actually the main event, that means that it is rather different than the "fun run" style events. There are corrals, there are timing chips, there is a winner, in this race - and there are none of those things officially in the fun runs (all of the other 5k's at this point).

So, while I don't know what that actually means in terms of being swept, nor do I know how much the pacing is actually enforced, just know that this particular event is not quite as slow/untimed as most of the other Disney 5k's. It is designed as a competitive event, not a "fun run."

My friend and I signed up and are staying at All Star Sports.

Our first 5K as non runners.... Both started C25K. :cheer2:

And our team name is PIXIEDUSTIN'

Thanks for the warning. I guess what we should all take from this is that we probably should assume it IS a timed run and to ensure we can do the 5K in the 50 minutes (I think that's what it came to - might be 51).
I do know that when I viewed last years results there were lots of people that had a time of around the high 50's into the 60 minute mark for the run portion though but as someone mentioned earlier - they think the actual SWEEPING part may only start timing AFTER the last group has headed off so if this is the case then your sweep time would be subject to what corral you are in and since we don't know what corrals we are in again it's just best to assume you will need to fiish the race in the specified timing unless you have heard otherwise directly from someone at Disney.
I tried to pull up the results again just to confirm with myself what I saw as the higher times but the page came up blank for me this time so I think they might have wiped it out now in anticipation of setting the site up for all the 2012 stuff.

LOVE the team name :) :)

Oh, one more thing. There was some question earlier along on how they were doing the clues this year b/c they made it sound a bit different from the past where the clues were searched for AFTER the run portion. Well on the site now this is what it says....

NEW in 2012! You will need to search for clues along your 5K Trek to help you solve the 5 Clues at the end before you can complete the 5th Adventure Expedition Everest Challenge. At the completion of the run, trekkers will return to the Butterfly Lot to complete their clues for the scavenger hunt. Remember those 5 clues along the way, they will help you reach the summit. After the clues have been solved they will reveal an answer that will lead trekkers to the party.

So, it almost sounds to me like you need to keep your eyes peeled for the clues WHILE you run and have to solve it IN the parking lot at the end??? Is that what you are all taking away from this paragraph?
I did hear of problems with people loitering and figuring out clues while others were still trying to run so I CAN see them doing it differently to try and avoid that - I really don't like the idea of having to run, do obstacles AND look for and remember clues ALL WITHING THE SET time limit though :sad2: This is my first run and it's going to be an effort just doing the run - guess I better UP my training a bit more. hahaha

Hi! To those looking for last year's results, while the link on RunDisney no longer works properly, the results are still available on the Active site here.

Edit Hmm, turns out since I haven't posted, I can't insert links. Here is the full link:
Re-edit I can't post links at all, so remove spaces from where I placed a "*":

Hope this helps!

Yikes, me too! This is not only my first 5K but my first attempt at running. :scared1:

Perhaps we should also train to run AND look for clues at the same time. And maybe jump over random stuff and children on the sidewalk. Oh dear...

I'm right there with you!! I was born a walker (literally, my maiden name is Walker :lmao:), and running alone is a challenge for me. We have some friends that are going to be at Disney, and now they are also competing. I totally know they will kick our butts, since the husband ran 11 miles right before playing a tennis match on Saturday. Meanwhile, I'm proud of the 1.7 miles I walked yesterday. :)

 you two are funny!! For me right now i have plenty of obstacles (ice, snow, slush) but that's whey I'm sticking to the treadmill. I wonder how i could add obstacles to the treadmill! lol. Although a few times my dog tried to jump on it with me :rotfl2: (crazy mutt) but he's learned now to STAY AWAY while I'm on and wait his turn.

I really don't see them sweeping if they are going to make you look for clues along the way. I need to find someone with a bunch of tires I can practice running through....hmmm

:rotfl: I'm thinking of a day trip to AK just to pay really, really close attention to stuff along the race course... would photographing the whole thing and keeping it on my iPhone (which I'll have one me while racing) be considered "cheating"?! ;)

:rotfl2: Yep, I had a cat try that once, too! Only once.

Well, my training obstacle is... myself. :headache: A few weeks in the wrong running shoes has led to something going very badly with my knee; haven't been able to run on it since Princess weekend. Seeing my doctor this week and hoping she says it's nothing serious... of course, I have a 5K scheduled this coming Sunday, so who knows what'll happen with that. Ugh!

:rotfl2: I TOTALLY thought of doing that!! then i realized b/c i was trying to run they would just be so blurry i woulnd't be able to see them on the back of a small camera anyway :headache: Hopefully my dd's memory can be depended on more than mine!!!

I hear ya! My obstacles lately have been a hamstring that has been bugging me and recently I had a really bad fall and bruised my tailbone and that's making it difficult to run too :sad1:
I hope your dr finds that it's nothing serious! and you just reminded me that i need new running shoes so they can be worked in by the run:eek: I bettter get on that.

Me too! Glad I'm not the only one!

Yay - kindred spirits!

I can totally see my dogs do the same thing. A while back I was trying to workout with a Pilates dvd -- even if the dogs were sound asleep, when that dvd came on, they would come into the den and try to sit on me while I was lying on the yoga mat....uncanny how they knew.

That is a great idea about practicing and taking pictures in DAK. I am wondering about how easy it will be to spot the clues, in the dark AND with loads of people trying to do the same thing. This will be interesting, to say the least.

PrincessV and wakica - ouch about your injuries! I've had knee and tailbone problems so can commiserate. Hope you're both feeling better soon.

I'm guessing the clues will be well marked and that you just pick them up and keep going. But who knows...

I was thinking that too. Being that it's in the dark they would definitely need to have some light shining on it right??? So it'll be obvious I would think - I wasn't even thinking it would be something you pick up though - I was thinking a sign with a word or some words on it and then you would have to put your clues together at the end and use the things you saw to figure out your answer to the clue. Who knows though hey?? :confused3 I guess that's what makes us worry is fear of the unknown. I'm sure the clues have got to be pretty simple if they expect us to watch for them and remember them to help us answer the clues we get at the end!!!! It's GOTTA be easy! RIGHT????

I think I'll be so focused on my running/walking time that I'll have to look for the heard of people crowded around where the clues are.

I did my first day of C25K yesterday, and I was kind of bummed that I covered the same distance as when I just walked. I guess I'm walking a bit slower to rest after my 1 minute run.

For those that have done C25K, when did you start noticing a difference in your endurance?

Of course, the fact that I'm fighting chronic bronchitis right now isn't helping too much. Per my doctor, I'm having to do all my workouts on a treadmill, and I HATE it! I think I would do much better outside, where the scenery is changing. Not to mention that weird, floating feeling you get when you get off the treadmill after completing you walk/run.

Ouch! I bet - a bruised tailbone is no fun at all. Feel better soon!

Thanks! Here's something odd: in an effort to do something without hurting my knee, I did my New York City Ballet workout last night and just skipped any deep knee bends and jumping... it made my knee feel sooo much better! A hot bath helped even more, whereas ice and compression have made it worse. Don't know what to make of it, but I'll take it, lol!

Thank you! :goodvibes

Me too, but then again, when has Disney ever made things well-marked?! :rotfl:

I wasn't even thinking it would be something you pick up though - I was thinking a sign with a word or some words on it and then you would have to put your clues together at the end and use the things you saw to figure out your answer to the clue.
That's what I keep picturing, too. Frankly, I'll be depending on my 9yo, who remembered all sorts of details from our 5K through Epcot... while I sat there at dinner asking, "Did we really run through Morocco? I don't remember that part..."

For those that have done C25K, when did you start noticing a difference in your endurance?
I don't do the C25K, but the Galloway program's not that different - I'd say I noticed an uptick in endurance by Week 3. I wasn't necessarily faster, but the distance starting feeling a lot easier. From that point on, the speed started picking up. :thumbsup2

 I totally feel your pain - I've been down the bronchitis road before and it's just awful; I can't imagine running like that! Hang in there and don't push too hard.

princessV - that's great that your knee felt good afterwards :thumbsup2 Just talking out loud but typically heat is for muscles (to help them relax) and cold is to take down inflamation so maybe it just means that the problem lies more in the muscles than it being an inflamation problem?? :confused3 The whole cold/hot things always has me baffled too b/c I never know what the problem is - muscle or inflamation - so i usually do the alternating thing to have both bases covered. haha
