Expedition Everest Challenge May 5 @ 9:30 2012

princessV - that's great that your knee felt good afterwards :thumbsup2 Just talking out loud but typically heat is for muscles (to help them relax) and cold is to take down inflamation so maybe it just means that the problem lies more in the muscles than it being an inflamation problem?? :confused3 The whole cold/hot things always has me baffled too b/c I never know what the problem is - muscle or inflamation - so i usually do the alternating thing to have both bases covered. haha

Thanks! And my thoughts exactly - there never was any visible swelling, making my self-diagnosis all the more perplexing, lol! But ice wasn't doing much beyond numbing the whole area, whereas the hot bath really seemed to "smooth" things out, for lack of a better description. And goodness knows I have knee issues to start - I can't kneel at all because my kneecaps will actually pop out of place! To get them back in requires a moment of "I think I may actually die" pain while straightening my leg. After that, it's back to normal. But I just make an effort to avoid the experience altogether. ;)

I don't do the C25K, but the Galloway program's not that different - I'd say I noticed an uptick in endurance by Week 3. I wasn't necessarily faster, but the distance starting feeling a lot easier. From that point on, the speed started picking up. :thumbsup2

I'm doing Galloway too and the only way I could pick up speed was to switch from 1 min/1 min to 30 sec/30 sec. But about the same time I did that I started running outside instead of on the treadmill and I think the pavement is too hard on my legs. I may end up walking a lot. My goal is just to finish though. :)

oh my GOSH!!! I'm so sorry for you!!! I don't EVER want to have to experience that feeling! :scared1:

i'm dreading outside running! I already find it hard on my treadmill and I've been at it since November!!! I'm like you - I just want to finish and be within the time requirement and that'll make me happy and proud of myself :goodvibes

This will be my fifth Everest!

Me too! It's sure been a fun journey to follow along as they keep changing the format and time of year. I preferred the late September date over May (too many school groups at the parks!), but I still keep going back!

That's what I keep picturing, too. Frankly, I'll be depending on my 9yo, who remembered all sorts of details from our 5K through Epcot... while I sat there at dinner asking, "Did we really run through Morocco? I don't remember that part..." :rolleyes:

I ran the Tinkerbell Half and don't remember running through the castle. It took seeing actual photographic proof before I was willing to accept that the course did go through the castle. :rotfl:

Yeah, there's definitely a transition period going from treadmill to outdoor running and vice versa. I don't disagree that pavement is harder on the legs, but I think if you give it time you'll find you get more used to running outdoors.

Just noticed that you are from SK - I'm from NB!

i was going to say hello neighbor but we really aren't that close hey?? lol so i'll settle for hello fellow Canadian :goodvibes
We LOVE NB!!!! We have been there twice and would love to go back - it's a beautiful place!! Whereabouts are you?

We are near Saint John. I have only been as far west as Ontario, but someday we will do the cross Canada drive. DH has been to SK for work.

Well if you do get this far it'll be to head to Alberta to the mountains bc there's not a whole lot to see here except for prairie and big skies. hahaha.

We wanted to head out your way but didn't get around to it :( The closest we were was the Bay of Fundy - Hopewell Rock or Cape or something like that. We also hit Moncton, Fredericton, Grand Falls (I think that's where the Gorge was which was beautiful), and Miramichi.
It was a very nice trip. We also visited PEI, Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island on one of the trips out there.

anyway, nuff of that :) LOL I have a tendency to go on b/c it was just so beautiful out there!!!

:thumbsup2 Finishing is a GREAT goal, in my opinion! And there's nothing wrong at all with walking. I tweak my intervals a lot, depending on how I'm feeling, how long my run will be, etc. I seem to feel best right now at a :45run/:30walk pace, but I'd sure like that run portion to get longer!

oh my GOSH!!! I'm so sorry for you!!! I don't EVER want to have to experience that feeling! :scared1:
I won't lie - it sucks! But it's easily preventable, too, so it's not so bad :)

I ran the Tinkerbell Half and don't remember running through the castle.
:rotfl2: That makes me feel better! Between the early hour and paying attention to where other runners are, it's tough to recall the details.

ITA - I'm at the point now that I detest training on the treadmill. I know it's better for my knees and allergies, but I enjoy being outside so much more.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Went to the doctor today... diagnosis is runner's knee! Nothing awful and nothing surprising. She said it's mild and though giving it more rest is a good idea, racing Sunday is fine, too. She recommends slathering it up with Biofreeze and giving it my best effort. Ice, ibuprofen and something yummy to eat afterward, also. I like her. :) Post-race, lots and lots of cross-training to strengthen my quads (because the bazillion squats and lunges I do already aren't enough?! Oy.)
Me again -
The course map's up! Expedition Everest Challenge Course
So it looks like there'll be 4 areas throughout the park to do the clue cards after the 5K. I'm still trying to figure out the out-and-back to Rafiki's Planet Watch... I thought that was train tracks? Is there a road between Africa and PW I've never noticed?
Yes there is a road back there. It was part of the course for the Halloween 5K in 2011.
You probably don't notice it because of the design of the train that takes you out to Rafiki's Planet Watch. Just as with the Doom Buggies for the Haunted Mansion, the train is designed so that it forces you only to see what the imagineers want you to see.
Wow, I am loving this thread with all of the super helpful information!
So, in looking at the map, it looks as if the clues are not directly on the course so we get off the course to look for the clues? Does that make sense?
I'll be getting in the day before so hope to spend a little time in DAK either Friday or Saturday to walk around...don't want to tire myself out, though.
About pacing, I hear ya. Right now I'm running about 15 mins out of 32 - lots of progress for someone who never ran at all just a month before. But I still run much more slowly than I walk and I don't even think adrenaline will make me go faster, I'm too out of shape. Everything I read, though, tells me that pacing will come eventually - I just hope it shows up BEFORE the race, not after!
As I understand it, the 5K with obstacles will be run first, paying attention to who-knows-what as you run to help figure out clues later. Once at the end of the 5K, we'll get our first clue card, which, once solved, will lead us to the next clue card, and so on until we reach the final clue. So, figure on running or walking the 5K course and then running or walking around the park for the clues portion, too. Think we'll train for a 5K followed by a 2-3 mile walk, lol!
jeanigor, you're right - I never noticed that road before! Next time we take the train, I'm snagging the back row and I'll try peeking through the cracks, though.
I'm guessing the clues will be well marked and that you just pick them up and keep going. But who knows...
The clues were well marked during the Tower of Terror 13k. If its anything like that you'll see them while you're running. You probably won't even have to stop.
So as I sit here and read and become more excited, I'm getting ready to face my own obstacle tomorrow. Surgery! Just hoping and praying that the Kansasketeers are ready by May 5! I've been wanting to do this race for a LONG time! Wish me luck!
My wife must be either excited or scared for the race. She's been practicing! I'm so proud of her!
I'm just the opposite - I can't wait to get outside! I did my first walk outside, and all the rest inside because of bronchitis and allergies. I asked my doctor yesterday when I can go back outside because I find the treadmill so boring. She told me it might be a while. :sad2:
Are you running on road pavement or concrete sidewalks? There are a lot of runners in my neighborhood, and they all say that concrete sidewalks are some of the worst surfaces to run on and it's really bad on your knees. DH also already injured his knees by running on the sidewalk, and once I can start training outside again I think we'll probably go to a local school track. I know tracks are also boring, but at least the scenery will change a little bit!
Here's an article DH found when trying to research good running surfaces:
I much prefer outside too. It is just road pavement. I think I will just walk for a bit. Whatever I've done isn't very bad but I'm scared to make it worse. I'll get it checked out too. There is an indoor track here, but only walking allowed, no running.
I hope i start enjoying outside running. DH says he likes it so much better too but b/c of my hyperactive airways I cough after even an indoor treadmill session and to go out into the cold air makes it SOOOO much worse and my lungs feel like they are on fire!!! i sure hope once it warms up more here i'll be able to go outside though.
Interesting! My house borders a golf course and I'll confess to running in the grass alongside the asphalt cart path. :rolleyes1 Never on the green, but most of what's next to the path is the off-course rough (though even the rough at this place is cut nice and short), and I figure my running shoes are a lot better for the grass than golf cleats! I live less than 5 miles from the beach and love to walk/run on the packed-down sand at low-tide, too.
47 days to go
and I bought some new runners finally! YAY!!!
I know - not all that exciting really but i've needed a new pair for running the Expedition Everest 5K challenge b/c my old running shoes are 2 - 3 years old now and I knew I'd need time to get them worn in b/c it's NOT a good idea to run a race in brand new shoes so it's a relief to FINALLY have this taken care of.
Next is swimsuite which is ALWAYS a nightmare UGH!!!
Oh well, If you'd like to see them (mine aren't all that exciting but DD14's are pretty darn cool i must say!) then have a look at my pre trip report at this link.
It's on page 9. oh and please say hello. (is there a begging character?? lol)
