EWWWW GROSS... DH and I have been away for the last week and I just went to pull the garbage container out to the street and there are those little white rice looking bugs on it and on the ground. YUCK....YUCK....

How do I get rid of those things now? And where did they come from???

BLEACH. Throw bleach on them and they die. OMG, they are the only creatures in the world that I hate the most. We also had them on our garbage pail years ago. When the food in the garbage starts to rot, this is what grows from it. We only had them one time and I called up the dept. of sanitation because I didn't know if they would pick up our garbage cans with them on it. The guy said don't worry, it happens all the time in the warm weather and to throw bleach on them. I did and it worked. From then on,once a week in the warmer months I swirl some bleach in the garbage cans outside and hose them down....

Maggots are fly larva (eggs). Keep the garbage completely sealed (bags with twist ties, tight lids on garbage cans) - anything to keep the flies out. Especially true if you put ANY meat scraps in your garbage.

:earsboy:

One time we killed a fly in the house and maggots came out of her. ICK!!!

Oh, those are sooo gross. Happened to us one time. Bleach works wonders. I always leave the cans outside the garage.

Yuck yuck yuck... once the garbage is picked up I will do the bleach thing in it... yuck yuck yuck... Guess I need to pull out the garden hose... .

You will probably find that they are "mysteriously gone" if you return to your can about one day later.

You can still hose the can out good. Use bleach if you want but it probably isn't necessary . Happens.

Ok so the garbage truck came and went. I went down to bring the bin up to clean it and there is still a bag of garbage in the bottom and probably the source of this "problem". I refuse to touch that bag... so how am I supposed to clean this now???

Sorry, bump.....14 months later and I'M wondering this now???? :confused3

I thought it better to bump rather than start a new, disgusting thread. :crazy2:

I know the bleach thing now but, do I TRY and bleach them while they're swarming around the smallest top opening of the garbage bag OR, wait until the City takes the garbage away first? :confused3 Am I risking anything by leaving them there for now?? :confused3

Does anyone know how many eggs a fly can hatch/leave? :confused3

The whole thing didn't bother me at first, probably because DS was sooo grossed out (LOL) but, ever since, I've had the heebie jeebies. :crazy2:

wait until your garbage can is empty and then take it out back, hose it off and bleach it, then hose some more. You can repeat this.

I've seen thousands of maggots in one place before, and thats usually when dead animals "fluff" (if you don't knwo what I'm talking about, you don't want to) but those are from many flies. One housefly usually has 300 eggs at a time, and an egg goes through three stages as a maggot before becoming a pupa. (maggots are larve with a tri-instar larve stage) But you could easily have thousands of maggots from just a few flies.

Maggots are actually used in medicine too. If someoen has an infection that just won't heal, maggots are put on the open wound and tehy eat the dead flesh. It doesn't hurt the person at all, it actually helps.

....don't ask me how I know so much about maggots. ;)

Thankfully, the can is already at the alley.

well I hope I helped.

(and you don't want to know about fluffing)

fluffing is the nice way to discribe what happens. ;)

I'd wait until after the garbage is taken on monday, so it'll be empty.

Thanks Sparx!! :goodvibes

Fluffing doesn't sound nice at ALL, in that context! :sad2:

Really looking forward to Monday! :thumbsup2 ...........................NOT!!!!!!!! EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW! I just hope I fall asleep now. :guilty:

Thanks again! :thumbsup2

This happened to us last summer. We cleaned the cans out with Clorox around 5 times!! Blech!

Oh my god this reminds me..... ever since I saw "The Lost Boys" I have never been able to eat white rice again! all those who have seen it know what I mean.

OK.....someone told me their tried and true thing for keeping them away...granted we have not used this technique, but I will pass it on.

Someone told us to disinfect the trashcan and then while empty and properly secured face with mask for fumes, spray RAID (bug spray) in the can.
They say it keeps them away.

We make sure to tie off our bags so the maggots stay in the trash bags.
