DVC X RunDisney

Is the convenience of Beach Club worth sticking with it, not withstanding getting lucky with the BRV reservation?
Well, it is easy for me to spend other people's money... But I would rent out the one-bedroom BRV and stick with Beach Club. I'm guessing it would cover a good chunk of the costs and the location benefits are so so high for your family.

[I'm assuming that you are able to get dressed quietly at those ungodly hours on race mornings without fully waking your family up in your Beach Club studio!]

That's exactly what I decided! (And I just got a small BWV contract so I'll be in a position to rent closer for future W&D races).

I think there's likely a decent intersection of DVC owners and RunDisney participants, so here's a thread to get to know our fellow DVC-rDers from the Dis 😁

Some questions to kickstart things, feel free to discuss any/all that tickle your fancy!

Family group is running WDW Half in January. Wondering for those that are experienced- what park do you try (if any) after a race? And do you try to get a dining reservation for a late breakfast or wait for a lunch/dinner after a nap lol. We are staying at Copper creek. it will be a first half for most of the group!

Everyone's a little different! Usually I eat breakfast at the resort from the quick service as soon as I get back (sweaty clothes and all), then have some downtime in the room to shower and recharge before heading out. I would plan a more splurgey lunch or dinner. A lot of people like MK after the race so they can take pics with their medals in front of the castle, but it also depends on what kind of tickets you have, how many park days, etc.

Love eating at Whispering Canyon after the half marathon. Then you guys can boat over to MK for medal pics!

I’m new to DVC but am always looking for “reasons” to travel to DisneyWorld. How fit do you have to be to attend runDisney? I’m thinking of using it as an incentive to attempt a 5K but everyone that attend seems SUPER serious!

DH and I walked the 5K in 2017. He hates walking (except between attractions in the parks 😉), so I think our time worked out to about 20-21 minutes per mile. Disney sets the required pace at a 16-minute mile, but for the 5K they don’t begin timing until the last participant crosses the Start line, so if you’re near the front of the “slow” corral and keep walking, you have a great chance of finishing. We didn’t stop for the fun stuff, like photos with characters (it was tempting, because they had some rare ones out there!), we just kept going and got our medals! So if you can walk the 3.1 miles, go for it. The 5K was really fun for me, and if it weren’t for some life changes I’d be doing more of them.

Thanks so much for this! I really appreciate it!

Not very! The nice thing about the 5k is that it's untimed. That doesn't mean you have an unlimited time to complete it, but they won't sweep you from the course if you're approaching it like a nice, leisurely lap around World Showcase. I'd def recommend starting with a 5k to see if you like it enough to want to train for the longer distances! Those have a stated 16 minute per mile requirement, and they do pull racers from the course who can't keep up after a certain amount of time.

They don't actually time the 5k at all 😁 It's true that for the longer distances the clock doesn't "start" until the last racer does.

You mean we could have stopped for characters and not been swept? Oh well, I was happy that DH and I finished and proud that we weren’t even the last to cross the Finish line!

For anyone wondering, we were “running” the 5K “with” DD and DSiL, who of course were in one of the early (fast) corrals and actually finished shortly after we started. I had been training and was doing 17-18 minute miles but DH participated only so as not to feel left out!

Good to know!

You could have probably stopped for one or two characters, but those lines are LONG and they do eventually close the course. :)

Yes, we noticed those long lines, so we just kept going. The photo of me crossing the Finish line was more important than photos with characters!

I'm checking in to CCV the day before my first race, so headed to the expo that day.

I'm thinking of using the "free waterpark admission on check-in day" benefit if the weather permits. Will I be able to get uber/lyft from the expo to go straight to the waterpark?

Is this a dumb thing to do the day before the races? I am not sure I will renew my annual pass, so looking for some non-park activities. I'm trying to balance taking advantage of being in WDW, with not over-doing it or getting injured.

I've been dropped off at the expo by rideshare before so I can't see any reason you couldn't be picked up there too.

What's your next race coming up/what are you currently training for?
My next race will be the 1/2 Marathon at WDW in January

Are you an occasional participant or do you race every year?
Every year! My family usually does one 10-day trip around marathon weekend, usually heading home around the time Festival of the Arts begins.

Does your whole family runDisney or do they just come along to support you?
My wife isn't a runner, and my oldest of four kids is only 8, so it's a solo activity for me.

Which resort is your favorite to stay at for a race weekend?

Poly Poly Poly! I love the convenient transportation via monorail, and it's also convenient for my wife to come over to the TTC to cheer me on at a reasonable hour without having to schlep four kids onto a bus by herself. It would be my favorite resort, period, but for marathon weekend it can't be beat.

Did you start runDisney before or after joining DVC?
I started running in 2019, and bought DVC in late 2020. Marathon Weekend was how I convinced my wife that Disney should be an annual tradition for our family. I had never run a mile in my life before 2019, but decided that I like Disney more than I hate exercise, which gave me the motivation to sign up, buy some shoes, and start with my first half-marathon. I've done two halves and two fulls since then, and am glad we have DVC to make that possible!

I do want to plug the RunDisney forums here on the DIS, where there is a lot more deep-dive discussion about individual race weekends, costumes, ClubRunDisney, individual training journals, and more! If you want to dig into other aspects of RunDisney apart from DVC, come give us a look! https://www.disboards.com/forums/rundisney.201/

How quickly does the Dopey challenge sell out once the registration opens? days? weeks? I'm planning on doing one for 2026.
