DVC vs. AFVC

Hi!

After sending my signed paperwork for 160 BCV points back to Disney last Friday, I came across a thread on another board that I read about The Armed Forces Vacation Club. I did a little reading up on it, and it seems to be a vacation program for active duty, retired, NG, etc. I am not sure about government employees, but they usually are included.

It seems that one can rent a 1-2 bedroom timeshare condo for $249 per week, total. They have availability all over the world, and I think that it is better for spur of the moment vacationers, even though I was able to input May 2004 dates.

I was curious if any of this board had heard of it, utilized it, or had any opinions on it.

My DH is retired USCG, and we can utilize AFVC, as well as SOG @ what is currently $95/night.

Thanks!

Jackie

From what I've heard, they mostly rent the left over unused deposits with RCI. It can be a good deal if you can travel off season or short notice and occasionally a real gem will come along. Good luck.

The only military program that I know of for WDW is Shades of Green. They offer rooms with price based on pay grade. The resort is in the MK area. It is being refurbished at the moment.

I think the OP is talking about staying in timeshares in general, not at Disney.

Thanks Dean. Boy did I misread that one!
There are several programs where one can rent what is essentially the excess inventory from RCI. There is some question whether RCI is deverting deposits to this program that shouldn't be there and keeping them from members that would want them. This is one but there are others. Alaska air I believe has a similar program open to the public.

Look for information on the AFVC program over on the Orlando Resorts and Attractions forum. Plenty of people have used it successfully, as well as skyauction.com . If you wanted to travel during prime holiday weeks, it would be pretty useless. But at any other time, people have vacationed at Gold Crown timeshare resort properties in the Orlando area.

This is like the longstanding onsite vs. offsite debate really. If you only want to stay onsite, then DVC is the only timeshare option. If you would be happy with a nice offsite place, then Disney resort options (including DVC) will generally be more costly than similar accommodations offsite.

If offsite is an option for your family and you like spacious timeshare resort condos, then only rent (as with the AFVC, SkyAuction or direct rentals from owners, such as on Tug2.net) or purchase resale at a greatly reduced cost. There are many nice resorts offsite. SoG has a loyal following as well, for those who are happy with hotel room stays (onsite).
