My dh and I have been talking about buying into DVC and I just tried to request the free video. It asked what state I was from first and after I selected Nebraska it said it had to follow the laws in the different jurisdictions of different states, blah, blah, blah. Then said my state is not registered, thanks for the interest. That's it! No video or any info? People from other countries can buy into it, but I can't in Nebraska? Is this right? Any DVC owners out there from Nebraska? Thanks for any advice.

Every time Disney opens a new DVC resort they have to get clearance from each state to conduct real estate sales in that state. It looks like they aren't currently able to sell anything to you in Nebraska. The law does not permit them to send you any sales materials (i.e., the video). You can make a purchase while in Florida. Sometimes people work out ways around their state not allowing sales. Maybe someone from Nebraska can give you an idea of how they did their purchase.

It's not allowed in NV either. We went to WDW in 99 for what was a "once in a lifetime trip". We saw the ads on the WDW network tv and looked into it our last day there. We didn't know we couldn't buy from NV. After they told us this, we still wanted to look into it further. We went thru the whole spill about DVC and fell in love. But we wanted some time to think it over, just in case we were caught up in the moment. But being our last day in the world, we were caught short of time. We went to lunch on DVC, and came back and jumped in. We had never heard of DVC before our visit to WDW. Needless to say, we couldn't be happier with the decision. Am kinda glad we didn't have alot of time to think about it, as I'd have talked myself out of it. Both DW and myself think it's one of the best decisions we've made. Plan a trip down to WDW and look into it. You won't regret it either way. Plus it's a good excuse to get away from the weather you're having. Might be a short notice trip, but I bet you could get some good hotel deals. Just my thoughts.

Is it also the case that where DVC cannot sell, the resellers can? I believe I heard that once.

I realize this is not the way it's going to work for most folks, but we had my parents in Michigan buy for us. I am an associate member on their account, which means I don't get the membership card or the mailings, but I can make reservations, and it's my e-mail address on the account).

The best part is that they (my parents) decided to pay for it! It's a great way for us all to vacation together every year. I manage the account, my parents basically just tell me when they want to go and I figure out how to do it all.

They bought tons of points (476 to be exact, but got a few extra banked points in the resale) so we could stay at a GV once a year, but after the first trip decided to stay in a 2BR twice a year instead.

Back in '91, I saw a print ad in a magazine about it. When I called for more information, they asked where I was from. When I told them NY, that was it. They couldn't discuss it, they couldn't provide materials. They were very polite about it, but they're bound by the laws of your state.

Fortunately, we had a trip planned for late November of that year, and were able to join while at WDW.

ZachnElli...Looks like you just found an excuse to go to Florida! Wish I could come up with one. One other thought. Do you have friends or relatives in another state. You could order the video & sales material on-line and have it mailed to them, and then they could forward it to you. Otherwise, head to Orlando for a long weekend. Good Luck! ;)

Thanks everyone. I'm really disappointed. I'm guessing this means we can't buy it resale? We really wanted BWV. We are going to WDW in June. I just wanted to go prepared before we took the tour.

You can still buy resale, so don't worry about that :) Also, since you want BWV, you have to go resale.

If you have a family member in another state, perhaps they can request the video and info for you and send it to you if you really want it.

Registration or lack thereof has nothing to do with resales. Registration laws apply to original offeror of timeshare, in this case Disney. Thus, you can still purchase resale. Because of flakey history from many years ago, states passed laws governing timeshares. Some passed were so restrictive that they essentially made it impossible for any company to sell timeshares there, which is the likely case with Nebraska. The laws are also very restrictive about what the timeshare seller can say at all if it receives a communication from a person in an unregistered state. If the seller in such a communication does any act that could be considered an attempt to promote or sell the timeshare, the seller could receive a stiff fine.
