Hi, (havent been about recently due to stress related illness). I just received Augusts newsletter with the news of bonus gift for additional 130 points min,. purchases phase 2 SSR. I had previously planned to buy a vacation home in Kissimmee, however I think that I would never want to stay oustide WDW now. This offer - containing 2 free WDW APs and $10 per point discount seems too good to be true. Should I spend our vacation home deposit on this offer or go for the option of buying an offsite vacation home...I am a Disney addict and dont like staying offsite, but I am also looking for a good investment for our kids futures. Please help...:(

Sounds like you know what's right for you. ;)

OK, now you've got me worried. Timeshares aren't exactly known as being great investments. If you want to save money for your children's future, there are much better ways to accomplish that.

If you are convinced you want to spend your money on a timeshare, buy what's right for you. There's no guarantee your children will like your choice in 10-20 years--whether you buy DVC OR another timeshare--and there is no guarantee they will be able to afford the maintenance on a timeshare.

Get what YOU want.

I agree with tjkraz - timeshares are not an investment! DVC resales so far have been breakeven to profitable, but only due to Disney's right of first refusal keeping prices up rather than letting market set prices. And of course SSR property rights expire in 50 years, or is it 49 now?

Anyway, if your choice is between buying an offsite home near WDW and buying DVC, and you prefer to stay on site, then DVC's where you should probably buy. If you were considering another timeshare elsewhere (not in Orlando area) then it might be different. But why buy a home off site and then spend time pining to be on site?

(My parents own Marriott, so sometimes we stay with them, and we truly miss the convenience of being on Disney property with free transportation. My parents are both in their late 70's, so they tend to go to the parks at opening then come home after lunch, and if we don't have our own transportation then we're stuck in that condo the rest of the day....)

I think stayin on Disney property is part of the Magic so I would vote for the add on.

We are fortunate enough to have a vacation home and DVC points. Our vacation home is in Maine, not anywhere near Florida and we want it that way. We could never have a vacation home in the vicinity of WDW because it would kill us to stay off site.

A couple of years ago we were able to get a free trip to the Vistanna and by the time we were into our trip, we were wishing that we hadn't taken it and had used the points. Not staying in the world is difficult.

We vacationed several times in Vacation Homes before buying DVC. We really liked the Homes and were ready to put the money down and build one.

Since we had never stayed onsite up to that, I thought we should try onsite so we knew if we were making the right decision. Last September we stayed onsite for the first time and visited all the DVC resorts.

I dont know about you, but in order for us to afford a Vacation Home, we would have to rent it out. We would also have to do some maintenance if we wanted to keep our costs down. I pictured us coming to Florida for a week for a vacation and then having to touch up paint, pull weeds, etc. Not to mention the reservation process. (The only way you make money is to book ressies yourself)

Then I looked at DVC where all that is done for you and the maintenance fees for a year would cost me what 1 month's mortgage payment would cost on the vacation home.(It's very difficult to book a house 52 weeks a year and most owners only book 30-35 weeks therefore the remaining mortgage would be paid by us).

I split my contracts so each son will have their own if they want it.

I also agree about the transportation. With a home everyone needs to have their own transportation or you end up having to be together all the time. I wanted guests to be able to visit, but they would need rental cars so being onsite allows our guests to move about freely.

Good luck with your decision, Im thrilled with mine!

Thanks for the view. I think the add on is probably the safest way to go. I would have to rent a vacation home out to cover the costs. With regards to the investment part, at least I know that the annual dues on a DVC are affordable and that way my kids and their grandkids will have be able to experience Disney for the next 50 years.::yes::
