Driving question...

there was a recent thread about something similar that wound up taking a turn into this kind of topic.

Personally, I'd drive straight there. I live in Decatur, Al. 1.5 hours from Nashville.

My two bits...
I’m in North Alabama and the estimated map time is about 10.5 hours – 11 hours. We’ve driven down twice in the past couple years and have made the trip in about 9.5 hours. I don’t speed… well, within reason. ;) We don’t stop other than to use the restroom or grab a bite from a fast food place which is typical of any family.

A couple years ago DW (26) and I (27, now) drove to Ocala and stayed the night, then woke up early and drove to our on-site resort. We wound up getting to the parks around noon, IIRC. That was in December, when crowd levels were about 5-6, I believe.
We also just went in November 09. We left mid morning (about 8:30am) and got to DW at about 7pm Florida time (which means we lost an hour). We went first to downtown Disney to do some shopping, then back to our hotel room and went to the parks the next day.

My wife’s sister’s family made the drive overnight and went straight to the parks after doing some drive sharing and kids sleeping in the car and they seemed to do well during the first half of the day, but as the day progressed they were increasingly wore out and kind of messed them up the 2nd day when they slept in too late due to being so tired.

In that bit of experience, I think it’s better if you delay your trip to the park until a day when you’ve been able to rest and still wake up early. We’re a ‘get our money’s worth’ (see: cheapskates) family, and given the cost of park tickets, I’d prefer to have a full day rather than a half day no matter if the park is going to be crowded or not. But, that could just be us. You may have reasons for wanting to go to the park asap (screaming kids, etc).
I suggest simply getting an extra night at DW, making the drive up during the day and visiting the hotel/DTD once you arrive, and go to the park(s) the day after your arrival. You’ll be completely rested and ready to go.

I don’t know your situation and how you tolerate lack of sleep. You and your husband may be able to do just fine on 4 hours sleep each, but I still think the best idea is to take an extra vacation day and make your first night at Disney a non-park day, while getting some of the shopping/visiting at the hotel out of the way.
The ultimate lesson for any Disney visitor is this: get there early. No matter the crowd levels (which are estimated and aren’t dead accurate, as you’ll see from others who have complained about this in many posts), I think it’s simply best to get there bright and early. I love to sleep in… Love it… I say “it’s vacation, why should I wake up early”. Then I show up an hour after the park opens and kick myself while my wife just grins with the “I told you” look.

FWIW, my in-laws are all teachers. My wife's sister & family drove up after school... actually after one of their son's basketball games at 8:30pm.

What are your dates May ???-???... we may be there at the same time.

May 21st-29th - my hubby also works for Nissan  We'll leave out as soon as he gets off work - it's the kids' last day of school and they always let us leave with them around 10:00 or so - so we'll be packing the car and texting him every 5 minutes wanting to know when he's heading our way so we can get moving!!!:yay:

I cannot wait!!!! Hope you have a fabulous pixie dust-filled trip!

We live in Lynchburg (TN) and have done both. If you are going to leave at 8:00 am, I would go ahead and drive the whole way. If you leave more towards lunch time, I would stop in Lake City.

If you do decide to stop, be sure to have reservations. Our first trip we had to leave around lunch time and decided to stop....with no reservations. It was awful trying to find a place to stay. The next two years we had reservations in Lake City and drove in the next morning and the last two years we drove the whole way.

I like driving the whole way...but only if you leave early enough and are rested for the long drive.

I see you are staying at the Polynesian. This is what we are doing...and did last time. Drive on down and stay at Pop or offsite. check in early at the Polynesian....The earlier you check in, the better your chances of getting the Longhouse you want. If they originally put you in a Longhouse you don't want there are better chances of more rooms being unassigned that early in the day in the longhouse you do want.

If you can't find a room in Lake City, Gainesville and/or Ocala will likely have space...

But if it's only 3 hours (Lake City to Orlando), I'd just bite the bullet and wake up next morning in the 'World. I like the Value/Deluxe switch idea, tho!

The drive to Disney/Orlando from Lake City is easy. Especially with the time of day you would most likely be going through. I'd drive straight through.

Leave Middle Tennessee at 8AM, stop at the Georgia Aquarium and see the whale sharks, then continue to Orlando.

Have you been to the Ga Aquarium? Not that fun IMO. :/

Plus, if they’re in middle tn, then the Chattanooga aquarium is likely no more than a couple hours from them, and better to boot. ;)

From Thompsons Station here. What we plan on doing in December is leaving very early on a Saturday and driving to the Ocala area and spend the night. We will then leave there and arrive at WDW for our Sunday checkin on that morning. I have found the rates for Ocala to be better than those in the Orlando area and you only have about 90 min drive time to WDW from there. We have done the whole route in one day trip twice and it was very exhausting. We did it both all day and all night and I would choose to take a break somewhere along the way to arrive at WDW refreshed.
